2016 A-10 Tourney

Each team only has 2 or 3 games remaining so the 2016 A-10 tournament is getting very close.

We already know a few things for sure. La Salle can't qualify for the tourney. With only 1 win at the moment they are out.

Dayton, Rhode Island, SLU, VCU, and Duquesne looks like they have qualified. VCU and Duquesne are at the bottom of that group and even they have 7 wins. Teams 7-9 in the standing all currently have 3 wins and only have 2 games left. The top 5 teams are in and just playing for tourney seeds.

That means Davidson, currently at 5-9 still has not qualified and either needs a win or needs the other teams to lose. George Washington still plays both Fordham and George Mason so only one of those three teams can get to 5-9. And since Fordham and George Mason still need an improbable win against 2nd place Rhode Island, GW is most likely the only team that can tie Davidson for 6th place. A tie would only occur if Davidson loses out, but it's very possible considering Davidson's remaining schedule. In the last weekend Davidson will travel to Dayton and SLU, so their match against VCU at home could be their best shot to win their way into the tourney.

Dayton with only 3 games left and two wins over SLU has locked up a first round bye.

We already kinda discussed Rhody. They have fairly easy matches against FOR and GM, so logic says they should hold onto 2nd place.

SLU has sole control of third place at the moment and their next match gives them a chance to extend their lead against Duquesne. SLU also has a game against VCU at home so the Billikens are in the driver's seat. They just need to win to hold onto 3rd place.

So big game today with Davidson trying to make their first A-10 tourney appearance. It will require a big performance from the wildcats because all of their 5 wins are against the bottom of the conference. Otherwise they might need to hope for a GW loss or end up in a messy tie breaker. Anyone know the tiebreaker hierarchy??? Davidson split their matches against GW, so I'm not sure who would win in a tie breaker.

The only other DAV vs VCU match this year was won by VCU in 4 sets in Richmond. 22-25 26-24 25-20 25-18. The last match was close so a Davidson win isnt too crazy

Thanks Figgie!

VCU got a road win at Davidson in 5. Which does two things. It keeps VCU in the running for the three seed and therefore puts pressure on SLU and Duquesne. And it also causes Davidson to not yet qualify for the tourney yet. The focus will shift to GW and Fordham today. One of them will win and keep their hopes alive, the loser will be eliminated.

I think we have the 6 teams for the A-10 tourney.

Davidson posted this on twitter:

ICYMI: Despite a loss on Saturday, DCVB clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in school history on Sunday!

They were clearly paying close attention to that GW vs. Fordham game. Because Fordham won 3-1 and since Davidson won the only meeting between those two teams this year, Davidson will be going to the A-10 volleyball tournament.

The picture of the A-10 tournament is now pretty clear.

Dayton will be the number 1 seed.
Rhode Island should be the 2 seed. They hold a head to head tiebreaker over SLU.
SLU needs just one win against either VCU or Davidson (or a Dayton win against VCU) to clinch the 3 seed.

Davidson is at 5-7. With Duquesne at 7-6 and DUQ holding a head to head tie-breaker against Davidson, the Davidson Wildcats will be the 6th seeded team.
So VCU and Duquesne will most likely get the 4 and 5 seeds and play each other.

I just saw this story when I was heading to the SLU volleyball website. Some interesting information about the injuries that kept SLU from reaching their potential this season.

I thought this preview video from Davidson was good too. Their setter Mikayla Derochie discussing competition in the A-10 tourney and says that it's "very level in skill.....besides Dayton being a little bit ahead..." Some good stuff from their coach too.

From the outside we were guessing that their #2 OH was hurt. I had no idea their #3 was also out for the entire year. We all know they are getting better every week, which was why it was important for us to not give them any glimmer of hope in our 2nd match with them. It was good we got the sweep. But we also have to respect that SLU is 6-1 at home in the a10 and have only dropped 5 sets (3 to Dayton) at home in a10 play. They will be feeding off their home court advantage. We have to come ready to play every match because everyone will be looking to knock us off.

The team knows it is better than anyone in the tournament and the other teams also know it.

I think as UD's coaching staff you need to make the team realize that they need to show up ready to play their best. The other teams have nothing to lose and everything to gain. And a team is capable of playing out of their minds for one match. A team can get an inordinate amount of lucky breaks. But, don't be frustrated, I think we will win.

I remember reading about Bobby Bowden FSU's football caoch. He told his team before a big game that they were going to win. It wasn't going to be easy and they might fall way behind before they rallied to win. I think that they fell behind something like 20-0 but won. Just make sure that the team realizes it might not be easy.

Davidson wins 25-21. Going to a 4th set. Davidson out-blocking SLU 13-3. Rygelski is getting hers but Davidson block causing problems for other SLU hitters.

SLU advances winning 25-14 and the match 3-1.

Davidson had 15 block, but SLU started going to their MBs in this set and they scored. Rygelski had 28 kills - 7 per set - against the A10s best blocking team.

What a competitive A-10 tourney. Two matches went to 4 sets and both semifinal matches and the championship match went to 5 sets. I think the conference will be stronger when other programs can compete with Dayton. Hopefully young teams like VCU and Davidson built some conference from these matches and can carry it into their non-conference matches next year.

If SLU is healthy, they should be much stronger from start to finish. We need them to be a top 50 rpi program. LaSalle should also continue their assent. They will have a former ROY Junior Libero and Two sophomore former all rookie team players. I expect them to finish ahead of GM and Forham next year. I also hope we can have 2-3 teams in the 51-100 rpi ranks.

The bottom of the conference did a good job of staying above the RPI basement. La Salle, Fordham, and George Mason were bad, but they all hovered around 275 in RPI, leaving a nice gap of around 60 spots between them and the worst teams in the nation. There was no true worst team in the conference. I think La Salle's record was clearly the worst, but they really didn't get many home games against the teams they had a chance to beat. La Salle should continue to improve and with the 2016 Rookie of the Year awarded to Fordham, I hope they continue to improve as well.

I agree the bottom of the A10 was improved and hopefully it continues. The issue is the top took a step back. SLU suffered from injuries, GW regressed significantly, and while URI didn't slide back noticeably, neither did they take advantage of the opening given them by Dayton graduating 5 starting seniors.

All 3 of these teams are graduating eerily similar parts: starting setter, top OH, and top MB. GW is also graduating their top DS. The positives for the A10 are the aforementioned improvements of Davidson, LaSalle, and VCU. VCU in particular seems well-positioned after being 1 set away from the A10 Finals without a contributing senior (1 senior, hurt all season). Their RS attackers wreaked havoc on UD's defense, and they played with no fear against UD in the semis. They seem poised to make some noise the next couple of years.

All that said, Dayton goes undefeated in conference play for the 2nd straight season, and we all know they aren't losing anyone. Will be interesting to see how 6'3" Sierra Pla progresses in the Spring after a year of college under her belt, and I'm very curious to see Brooke Westbeld on the court. Thrilled to see Maggie's and Laura's contributions to really tighten up the back row, Jordan played defense well and served well (under great pressure in the finals), Margo is the LOY, and it seems like Tim is trying to get Jamie more reps in serve-receive. Jess, Amber, Kendyll, and Jane are 1st team all conf, and Lauren should have earned at least 2nd team. Lots to like here, though it's tough when you basically need to win the tourney to get into the NCAAs. I'll take it, though.

I expect Dayton's OOC schedule to be much tougher the next three years as this group of players pushes their play even higher. We should be a top 20 rpi those years even if we drop more than one match. That has been the formula in the past for the great teams of 2007-2011.

I also expect SLU to be good again next year even with the loss of Rygelski. Plus the other teams listed above, if everyone schedules well we could get back to a two bid conference, based on two teams with strong rpi's. That would be nice. Right now it will only happen if UD falters in the conference tourney.

I'm also interested in what the selection committee does with ILL this year. Current rpi is 50. Usually don't get an at large bid at 50 but 11 of their 13 losses are to top 50 teams. I would think they get in if the selections were made today. We will see how they finish.

UDVBFan,

You are exactly right with everything you said. I feel the same way you do about next year. SLU losses some key players, and Rhode Island not only loses some key players but their head coach is leaving. The A-10's clear 2nd and 3rd best teams of 2016 will bring huge questions marks into the 2017 season. On top of that, Duquesne loses a great senior libero in Sammy Kline. Of all the top teams in the A-10, Dayton and VCU are the only ones that you can really have confidence in next year, and that is kinda scary. I liked what Avid had to say in the Slooooo in A-10 thread "Talked with SLU coach after the game...He also noted that he had 3 very good players that were injured and could not play but would be back next year, so he is expecting another good campaign." So there is at least reason to believe SLU can be competitive in 2017.

GW's tailspin this year was awful, because no other team really took their place. Davidson just barely beat them into the tournament with an easy schedule and a good job getting wins against those easy teams. Davidson moved up in the A-10 standings but their RPI stayed about the same from 2015 to 2016. Figgie may need to comment on this but GW's decline (in RPI) from 2015 to 2016 has to be one of the biggest this conference has ever seen. I have never seen a team go from title contender to 7th place. Even Dayton still made the A-10 Semifinals after Sheffield's departure. I'm not sure if injuries played a role, but the fact that only 3 GW players played more than 90 sets out of 109 shows that they never had a consistent starting 6. They will really miss Chidima Osuchukwu. Her hitting percentage (0.325) and blocks per set (1.43) were really impressive.

GW was such a shock to everyone. They were picked by the coaches to finish 3rd in preseason if I remember correctly. Usually the coaches know the annual player turnover via graduation and they watch a ton of film, so they evaluate talent coming back. I have no idea what happened to GW this year.

"I liked what Avid had to say in the Slooooo in A-10 thread "Talked with SLU coach after the game...He also noted that he had 3 very good players that were injured and could not play but would be back next year, so he is expecting another good campaign." So there is at least reason to believe SLU can be competitive in 2017.

I have never seen a team go from title contender to 7th place. Even Dayton still made the A-10 Semifinals after Sheffield's departure."

I do think SLU can be competitive again because they have talent coming back (good #2 OH and #2 middle) but I really can't see them being at the same level next year even with a healthy Okoro. Losing Rygelski just takes too much shine off of whatever they're gaining. We'll see.

Your point about Duquesne's libero is spot on. That girl was a magician when we played them. If it wasn't Margo for LOY, I would have easily voted for her based on the 2 matches I saw.

I spoke to a VCU parent and asked about the team's feelings about their coach. To my surprise, the response was 'they really like her'. I know the background chatter when she replaced their long-time coach was pretty negative, and it was confirmed from several sources, but it seems she's recruited a ton of youngsters who have bought into her style. It showed on the court and I really liked how they brought it - no fear.

On the 'UD made it to the A10s the year Sheff left', it was all the more impressive given they had to use Jenna as their setter. Matt Affolder had 1 arm tied behind his back, and leg weights on for good measure. And if I remember correctly, they were leading in the 3rd set of their match and were tied 1-1 in sets when Jenna got hurt. Gutsy team and kudos to Jenna for stepping into a very tough role/situation and never complaining.

FYI on Affolder - his Flagler team won their conference championship and tourney championship. Good to see nice guys have success.
