For what will be a heck of a game considering UD won at Fordham by one point earlier and a chance to see an opposing rebounding machine in Davis and quite a freshman talent in Cavanaugh. Chance to clinch the #1 tourney seed with a win.

Okay start, but Jenna in a funk. That foul was a flat out push down of the Fordham player.

This game scares me, as it is a must win for Fordham, but not for us.

Nice crowd. Would have been nice to get through ticket line better and quicker. But I guess that is a good problem to have.

Fordham initiating a lot of contact. Need to keep fouls down, particularly on key flyers.

Amen. That Cavanaugh bumps every possesion.

Cannatelli with 5-7 threes is unreal. We are 8-13 on threes.

We have 19 fast break points to their 3.

Absolutely, and in the act of shooting was correct. Zero blockout by Phillips and then grabs her on the forearms as she is tipping/shooting.

The grabbing of Jenna on that breakaway should have been an intentional. No way the defender was going for the ball.

33 of 42 pts by Jenna and Lauren. Good to build that lead with Scaife only playing 8 minutes. Fordham with some horsepower down low, but our guards are on a different planet.

Outshooting them 52% to 31%, and 57% to 41% from three. Being outrebounded by two, but only 5 turnovers to their 7. Davis and Layfield both have 6 rebounds.

Layfield with another double double, 13 and 13, and outrebounds Davis by 2.

Burdette shoots 10-19 with 8 assists, after starting 0-3. Harris could not hit the broad side of the barn with her layups, but great D with 3 blocks and 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

On to Richmond!

First things first tough game vs George Mason home Wednesday night then at St. Louis. Tremendous defense on Davis and Cavanaugh today the difference along with transition points.

Burdette moves up two spots to 15 on career scoring with 1269. Next up Tobette Plesant (1308).

Probably our best game of the year overall. LC lighting it up early opened up a working margin. We sort of managed the game from that point on. Burdette was a leader and Layfield played well.

Thought our bigs did a very good job of hedging on the ball screens and then recovering without getting burned. It was pretty obvious that our week off gave us time to really work on defense and perfect the game plan. The good coaching shows.

Downside - no points from our bench other than a Szabo banked trey in garbage time. Harris continues to have trouble making layups. Ward slow and out of control.

I agree with the post above - should have been an intentional foul at the end of the first half. The only folks that thought differently were the zebras. Not particularly impressed with the officiating.

GMU on Wednesday at the arena is a monster trap game. Their record is as good as Fordham's. Their top player - Butler - leads the country in rebounding. Enjoy the A-10 title today. Forget about it tomorrow and get ready for GMU.

Never gets old watching our Flyers cut down the nets.

“We had a better emphasis on defense and guarding them,” Cannatelli said. “They were getting frustrated and we could hear them ripping on each other.”

There are certainly more talented starting backcourts than Jenna from Coooooville and LC24. And shots you can get in the A10 are not necessarily shots you can get in the SEC.

Still, on just pure shooting, UD has a pair of shooters that few can match if you give them a clean open look. LC24 has been on a tear, throwing in 5-7-10 long balls in different games. Jennas % is slightly better and she's picking her spots. You cant cheat off of either one and that's a luxury most teams do not have.

Scaife is making enough from deep to keep teams honest too. Her shot is so flat though it does scare me at times. LC24 is looking for her shot almost every trip down the floor. Shes been in a grip-it-and-rip-it groove for about 6 weeks.

Defense was very good today. Once again LC24 and Burdette and the other guards hedged very well over high ball screens. Outrebounded Fordham which most teams cant do. Rams never really went on a big run vs the Flyers. Their best moment was when we hit a turnover/sloppy play sequence midway through the 3rd quarter. Rams cut it to 13 right before the half after UD stretched lead to 20. Just 13 points is still within reach with 10 minutes left.

But Burdette does a quick catch and shoot from the top of the key, and then buries a fadeaway 15fter on the next trip to make it an 18pt lead heading into the 4th. To me this was the winning moment in the game when the nail was put in the coffin. Two very high degree of difficulty shots.

The difference between up 13 and up 18 is more than 5pts. It feels like double that -- especially when and how it happened.

BOO Chris guess yo have a short memory, Jenna already established the kind of back court player she is against the best teams in the land. Jenna handled Kentucky, Louisville and oh yeah you know the UConn Huskies in that elite 8 run. She got her shots and tore through the full court press by those teams and even UConn had to call off the dogs.

Totally a BS backhanded compliment. Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, are all SEC teams that we have beaten and or played even with. Louisville we have beaten twice in tourney's by 16 points when they were ranked 8th, and of course we were leading UConn at the half in the elite 8 game. So not only Jenna bu the flyers in general have fared well against those teams you don't think they can stack up against.

I must not have been clear enough. Let me be clearer. The A10 is not anywhere near the league the SEC is. This is not my opinion it is empirical data. Were the Flyers in the SEC and playing an 18 league SEC schedule against Miss State, S. Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, etc, things would be more difficult, just like were Jackson State to play an A10 schedule, they would find life more difficult. I dont see anything backhanded about recognizing the talent difference between leagues when comparing teams and players in the A10 -- or our players -- to players in other leagues. Doesn't mean we cannot compete and win vs some of those teams. But it does mean we're mindful that they are nationally ranked despite an 18-8 record for a reason.

This year is a different team than the Elite 8 team. Jenna is not surrounded by Hoover, Austria, Malott, Deane, and Cornelie. She's asked to do way more than simply protect the basketball and get it to the studs (which she did a fine job of as a frosh).

We got beat by Tennessee and Florida in the NCAAs. They are from the SEC too. Some success, some failure vs the league. We went 1-3 vs the four best teams on this year's schedule and only one was from a Power-5 league. We are talented and dangerous, but lets not forget ourselves either. Our margins are not huge and we win when we execute. In some of those games with Malott and Hoover all we had to do was roll the ball out on the court and we could win by 35. This team has had to work harder for its success -- and in some ways I find that both more impressive and more enjoyable to watch because they could lose to almost any team on the schedule if they dont execute (and also win almost any game). In some past seasons, UD literally just pointed to the scoreboard and named the score.

Its about this year's team. What happened in the past is another team and another coach. It might as well be another lifetime. I think Shauna is pretty grounded and understands that we're really good when we execute and everybody on the team "stays in their lane" and does their role, and we're pretty ordinary when we try to do things that are not our key strengths. For most of the year we've been really good. Occasionally we've been reminded how we can look when we lose focus and its difficult at times. Green has spoken about these moments continually all year about fighting through sloppy play and just finding a way to be a little tougher when things arent falling into place as planned. If the head coach publicly acknowledges these realities, I dont find it out of bounds for others to as well. In fact I find it refreshing Shauna doesnt sugarcoat those trying moments when we're getting out of our lane.

I think Green has done as well as one can expect a 2nd year coach to do under the circumstances she got the job and the debilitating injuries she's had to deal with. Im not sure Jabir would be better than 21-4 right now. We may have beaten USF or Green Bay, but may have dropped a game or two somewhere else because his playing style was a bit more risk/reward.

To show respect to other leagues, teams, players, and coaches in my opinion does not disparage our own product. We would certainly ask the same from them. We all watch WBB TV. We see what's out there. We know who are contenders and who are pretenders. There aren't many secrets.

Bottom line after all ranting and all is your position based on stats of leagues is that our back court could not score and compete with the likes of SEC and I say real game results say we did. Victories over Kentucky, Louisville, Vandy, Texas AM are proof, and we were the only team to give UCONN a run for the money. Who knows how UD would have done last year against UCONN with a healthy team and the sharp shooter Madiline Blais.

And by the way those teams we beat were top tier teams in their leagues and ranked top 25 or better. Both ky, and Louisville were top ten. No bottom feeders on that list.

I thought Ward looked the best she has this year. Her weight looks down a bit and she was moving better. Still a long way to go, but let's remember how Cunningham looked at the end of last season compared to today. Ward was a darn good freshman in the BE, so the talent is there. You can tell here basketball IQ is high.

The one thing we have this year to compete with higher rated conferences is athletes. Not sure we have ever had any kids the equivalent to Scaife and Layfield. Both are premier athletes, who have become top notch all-around basketball players. I thought Hoover was a stud's stud, but golly, Jenna has just passed her by. I think this team can be as good as the Final 8 team, if we can just get some bench and Harris can make her layups. That team was defined by three players. This one seems to have four.

Good observations Jack72 - watched G Mason's game against St. Joe this morning. They play a ton of 2-3 zone so hitting some outside shots will be key as will forcing Butler away from the hoop if possible to take 15 footers. Alex is going to need some help defensively on Butler so she doesn't get inbto quick foul trouble. Flyers I'd imagine will pack it in and dare Dotson to hit some shots like she did Sunday against the Bonnies. Mason turns it over - they had 19 Sunday and that included six by Butler and 5 by Cardano-Hillary. They just don't look very athletic and UD should be able to dominate with transition points just like they did against Fordham.

Actually Jack I think Ward lost a ton of weight. Used to be able to spot her do to her chunkyness now I have t I look for her number.

Yeah agree she is looking better and could be able force next year if not so in the post season this year.

Not only do we have 4 players vs 3 for elite 8 team but they are physical. LC24 has improved her game a lot, not just a pretty parimeter player, but can drive slash pull up jumper and getting better at defense.

Both Lauren and Jenna now seem quicker on their shots. Layfield is a beast for her size not afraid of contact. Undersized for a rebounder but not undersized in heart. Both Layfield and Scaife can create their own shots something elite 8 lacked.

Harris is a presence inside, just needs finish to finish. Wilmuth and Ward are more than serviceable in the paint to relieve Harris.

Getting Healthy at right time. I like Dennis but too soft but is another outside threat.

Like what Jenna said bout this team, have that something extra like the elite 8 had. May not make it to elite 8 again but feel they can progress past first round. All depends on matchups.

Coach Green sure seems to know what she is doing. Great choice to replace JJ, not missing a beat other than losing one recruiting class.

Yes Chris we went 1-4 against top teams this year and with an injury laden team. We are healthy now, so let's see what they can do. I don't feel you give the ladies enough credit considering their short bench this year.

Not even Geno could put up the wins with only 7 players to work with.

Again we have demonstrated all years Jenna has been in the backcourt that we can compete with leagues top teams, so if we can with top tier teams then we would be just fine against bottom feeders. The success you noted is proof of that.

Got to remember Jenna is not 100% either and plays with a brace. This team has the natural grit the elite 8 team lacked till their final run. I like our chances against anyone, don't mean we win them all but expect to be competitive. All depends on matchups.

Final four is a different beast, not many who can compete there.

You're spot on with Brittany looking better. She seams to be picking up the defense better and moving better on offense. We have to remember she has only played in 8 games with a total of 10 minutes per game.

All this talk of how good we are makes me a bit uneasy.

We did indeed have an outstanding game yesterday - and we have been playing good basketball. I was there and it was a fun game to watch. However, things are rarely as good as they seem or as bad as they seem - just somewhere in the middle. For example - to expect us to hit the same percentage of 3 points shots on Wednesday as we did yesterday is more than a stretch. We might just need to hit the layups that were missed yesterday.

GMU is coming to town Wednesday. We better bring our "A' game or we may get our rear ends handed to us. I hope the team is focusing on the task at hand - the next game and only the next game - and not thinking grandiose thoughts of elite-8 runs and the like. I know Shauna will do everything she can to keep their feet on the ground.

Play the next game well and the accolades and accomplishments will follow. Get one's priorities bass ackwards and this team could quickly crash and burn.

I thought the game was very physical and the officiating just horrendous. Not consistent at all.

What I loved is the Flyers said...OK, if this is how it is going to be we, will show you how physical we can be and that to me was a difference maker. We took the pushing and lowering of shoulders and stood our ground and let them know you can't push us around now or ever. I was so proud of the Flyers in this game. I think it proved something to Fordham, but more importantly to themselves and the rest of the league. You can't push us around as we will respond.

As for Coach Green. If UD doesn't lock her up long term, it is a mistake. She loves to push the ball like JJ did, but stresses the importance of playing smart and focusing on defense on every possession. I absolutely love this hire and I hear we have some great recruits coming in next season and the year after. Additionally, I hear we may be in the hunt for a top 30 player in 2021.

I think there is no letdown coming against George Mason. I think these ladies are hungry to run the table and then show this season is no fluke in the tournament. I can't wait to see what happens the rest of the way!

Go Flyers!
