BEVERLY HILLS (MI) – Got an email from the UDPride.com bot this morning wishing me a happy birthday. As the title of this tome cryptically infers, this is the big one. From here on, conventional wisdom tells me, it’s all downhill.

Or is it?

Here are a few thoughts on the subject:

-- Some quotes from the great Satchel Paige on life and the process of aging:

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”

"Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter."

"You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them."

-- Signing up for Medicare was every bit as confusing as all of those ads said that it would be. The daily barrage of snail mail, phone messages, emails and even stuff left at my front door, touting this plan or that surely doesn’t help matters any.

-- Reaching this milestone is done without presently having to partake of any prescription medications (even with the great Medicare coverage). Used to pop a vitamin every day until my last physical. My doc said you can take ‘em if it makes you feel better, but the actual benefits are negligible, as you end up whizzing most of them away. So I stopped.

-- “The child is father to the man.” I believe Blood, Sweat & Tears said that:

One of our favorite LPs freshman year at UD out on the 3rd floor West at University Hall, aka West Campus.

-- “10 Things Boomers Turning 65 Need to Know”:

-- As that preeminent philosopher and noted archeologist Indiana Jones once observed:

“It ain’t the years, it’s the mileage.”

-- Always like to benchmark where I am in life vs. where my parents were at the same age. When he was 65, my Dad was remarried and had a five year old daughter. His malpractice insurance company was a year away from ‘suggesting’ to him that it was time to retire as Chief of Surgery. Meanwhile, my Mom had been dead for five years at this point in the proceedings.

-- “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’.” Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption wasn’t talking about turning 65, but he might as well have been.

-- James Taylor chimes in with his thoughts on the subject:

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time
Any fool can do it, there ain't nothing to it
Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill
But since we're on our way down, we might as well enjoy the ride

-- My favorite question when playing pickup hoops was asked again just recently:

“Did you used to play basketball?”

My standard retort:

“I still do.”

My second favorite question when playing pickup hoops:

“How old ARE you?”

My usual reply:

“Does it really matter?”

-- When it comes to continuing to play pickup hoops the following two questions summarize my feelings:

Did you stop playing because you got old?

Or

Did you get old because you stopped playing?

The bottom line to me is that LXV are just some random Roman numerals. Do I feel 65? Hell no. Realistically, 65 has the look and feel of what I imagined 40 would be like, back when I was a young pup.

If there is any consolation to be had in passing this milestone, it is that each and every one of you reading this will someday be marking it as well (if you haven’t already) or you will die trying.

There just ain’t no way around it for any of us, kids. Like my guy Eric Woolfson of the Alan Parsons Project put it:

Time keeps flowing like a river
To the sea, to the sea
‘Til it’s gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forever more
Forever more

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
