Some horrible teams alright . . . an awful lousy coach who set our program back a decade. One decent year . . . with Donoher's kids.

God almighty, I'm 63 years old . . . get over it already Joe.

Great asset to Piqua

....that is Chip Hare. Well liked. Well respected.
Has helped ECC become a wonderful institution.
What do you think, Chicago '92?

But he'll never live down the time he got frostbite when his car wouldn't start after practice at the arena one night - and everyone had left. He hoofed it back to campus in below zero temps and a howling wind. Got frostbite on his ears for the effort - and had to wear some headgear to protect them for a game or two.

Chip was also one of the few guys that peaked as a college freshman and got progressively worse every subsequent year.

MCC Newcomer of the Year as a frosh and averaged 17ppg which is usually unheard of. By his senior year his production had dropped every season and he averaged 6ppg. Never seen a nosedive quite like it. He was a Top-50 recruit out of Perry HS in Massillon. Top-10 national center. Everybody wanted him.

Not knocking Chip as a person, just commenting on the stuff between the end lines.

Chip

Chris, appreciate the history but why pollute this thread with much of the "old" revisionist stuff most of us faithful flyers know about Chip and his college career--just sayin'! Again, not meant in any way as a criticism of your incredible efforts on this site and all of your thoughtful, articulate posts over these many years---but truthfully everybody including Chip has undoubtedly moved past that part of his "athletic resume'" and I'm sure that some of what transpired on the basketball for him while he was at UD would rank as some of his leaast "happy" memories of his time at UD!

Bottom line, he is a great ambassador, and seems to be one helluva' father and empolyee at Edison. I think this is the most relevant part of the Chip Hare story today--not some of those more forgettable moments from the O'Brien era. Just my 2 cents.....

I just thought considering its one of the most unusual college resumes' in the history of UD athletics, it made sense to provide some context for those younger whipper snappers that hear the name Chip Hare and say "who the he__ is that?"

I would have loved to see Chip play for 4 years under Ollie. I felt he was a better big man coach by far than OB. OB seemed to have him parked outside the 3 pt line.

I always felt his inside game would have been better but that is only an assumption on my part.

Ugh, why was that guy ever the coach at UD? It's no surprise the Pacers turned a corner under their new coach once Bird wised up and fired JOB.

hayjim will become famous soon enough
I first heard of CH from a relative who was a UD graduate from Sandusky, and quite excited about him coming to UD. MANY years later while shopping for my granddaughters at the Greene, another customer noticed my UD apparel, after a lengthy conversation about UD BB I realized he was an EX player and asked him his name. He never said anything negative about O'brian, and I respect that. I do believe, however if he could have played for any of the coaches following JO he would have been considered among the better players to attend UD.

Chip was the media Ohio high school player of the year in 1991. The coaches POY, Antonio Watson, went to Ohio State. Somebody mentioned Al Sicard. He was the coaches D-II player of the year in 1989. OB ruined both of them.

OB ruined many things and made some unbelievably poor decisions. UD should have seen it coming. Prior to OB's UD interview he made his first very poor decision. OB used the wrong solution for his contacts and had to do his interviews in dark sunglasses. UD hired a guy who came to campus wearing dark sunglasses! Somebody should have stepped in and said it was a sign from God to avoid this guy. Nope. Instead, they hired the clown.

Funniest memory of Chip Hare was when his eye lids froze open during the deep freeze of '93/'94. Glad to see he recovered.

We had ice on the inside of our windows in our house on Kie Faber. God that was cold.

Yep. As I recall, JOB and the coaching staff left the Arena before Chip was done with his post-practice shower & dressing. He got to his car outside the Arena, and it wouldn’t start. Since those were the days before everyone had a cell phone, he ran all the way back to campus, and contracted frostbite on his ears along the way. Once he was cleared to play, he had to use wrestling headgear until his ears were healed-up completely. That was when our program was at its lowest point in the post-WWII era. 25 years ago this coming January, IIRC. Glad those days are gone.

Good stuff.

But I have to give thanks to and appreciative JOB for that 1990 run. That run kept the program semi-relevant in what otherwise would have been a sixteen year drought between NCAA TOURNAMENT Appearances. It keep many of us engaged in UD basketball at a time when folks could have easily dropped it out their life. It made the death-filled fealing of the Donoher firing not hurt so much, or at-least not as long. And, realistically, Coach Donoher was not likely to lead Knight and company to MCC Championship, beat Notre Dame, Xavier twice, and the hated Illinois in NCAA TOURNAMENT.

You can rag on JOB all you want, but he knew basketball, he simply couldn't recruit worth a crap; however, he gave Knight, Springer, Corbett, Norm G., Uhl Jr., McCracken, Sam Howard, Robinson, Robertson, etal; and the fan-base a real gift.

Unfortunately, Chip Hare was surrounded by the likes of Scrutchins...om lord how in the heck did Scrutchins get on UD squad...crazy

Had to be the same. My memory is failing me, could have been his ears and not eyelids. Then again my memory is VERY fuzzy from those days. I do remember that deep freeze though Our slumlord had zero sympathy for us.

Joking aside, glad to see Chip is doing well.

Agree with your assessment, he could have coached but could not recruit. The talent level was severely sub-par.

One trick ponies have not helped programs in the long run. A number of teams had one great run and then floundered. Look at George Mason. I would have preferred a more consistent program. A nice half season stretch did not make up for the dreadful Great Midwest performance. The hole dug during the Great Midwest tenure took years to overcome and hurt UD's basketball stature for a long time.

Archie's sweet 16 run was much, much better because the program did not drop dramatically after the run.

Ostendorf or something like that. House had no insulation at all. Officer Jones had to leave us alone which was nice!

This isn't about Chip, but notable exceptions are Ryan Perryman and Rodney Horton, who never reached his potential. Maybe a case of blind squirrel finding nut. For the few gems, there were many duds.
