SLU 2 Match

This might be a pretty good match tonight. We beat them 3-0 a couple weeks ago but they have gotten better. So have the Flyers, but SLU knows this is their only chance to pull even with UD in the conference standings so I expect them to bring their A-Game and we will need to bring ours. Since our last meeting, both teams have beaten the same 4 teams. It will be great if we can put them away in 3, and that will be a great point of reference to show if we are getting better. But I expect a little tougher match this time around.

Emmenecker is dressed and doing the setting in the full team practice here at the end. Pla and Weaver doing practice from right side. Doherty came in halfway through though.

As I wrote that last update, Doherty came in to set. Looks like we are aiming into the first position on serves.

UD wins set 3, 25-17.

They just seem to be able to get kills in just the right spots. St Louis leaves gaps in the floor and we are nailing them. Wolf is doing a great job putting herself in good position to dig balls around the block.

Emmenecker and Doherty are doing like a 1.5-0.5 rotation split or something. I've been trying to count while enjoying the game.

Here is what I saw...Jane would start and play 3.5 to 4.5 rotations depending on if we received or served first. So she did play a little in the front row at the beginning of sets. After that they seemed to go to a 6-2 with both setters playing only back row and subbing in with Rightside OHs. That system gives you 4 hitters on the court at all times and when Amber is serving for a halh rotation we had the setter with 5 hitters on the court.

Sometimes it's easy to get confused since there seems to be 2 rules about lining up on the court in the 6 positions ... you have to be to the left/right of the next position in your row, and behind the person in front of you. So, Jane could be 6 inches behind Jessica, but both right at the net, and it's okay, even though Jane is back row.

It was also interesting to see the lineup today, and compare it to earlier in the season. I know we've had an odd set of injuries this year, but now Weaver, Doherty and Pla are getting playing time rather that Westbeld, Albarran and Schutter.

Weaver has a nice arm on her too. She nailed one from the backrow, and there were a few oohs and ahhs in the crowd.

#10 for St Louis has a good serve, and a nice arm on her too. Just like their player last year who seemed to do everything well. If she isn't all-conference material now, I'd bet she will be in one or both of the next 2 years. (She's a sophomore.)

UD gave up 31 points in the first set, and then 32 in sets 2 and 3 combined. Nice recovery.

Thats 48 consecutive conference wins in the row, still the active NCAA streak leader.

It was also interesting to see the lineup today, and compare it to earlier in the season. I know we've had an odd set of injuries this year, but now Weaver, Doherty and Pla are getting playing time rather that Westbeld, Albarran and Schutter.
Weaver was injured early in the year and just getting back. I thought she swung great last night. The best I've seen from her. I dont think Westbeld and Albarran traveled with the team last week although Peterson did. My assumption was they remained at UD for treatment of some kind, but that's a guess. It was good to see Brooke back in action last night even in limited time.

Pla played some early. Got hurt and missed some matches and is now back. I thought she swung as good as I've seen her last night. She really helps our block when she is in.

Doherty, being a freshman, played behind Jane and Brooke at setter to start the year. We began the year using two setters, but then moved Brooke to OH, I think initially because the team was struggling some in a 6-2, but later with the injuries we needed more hitters. So with Brooke being out the last couple matches, when Jane got hurt, next woman up was Doherty and she did great in her 3-4 starts. So great it looks like TH is ready to move back to a 2 setter offense. You get more hitters on the court and with the injuries we aren't that tall, so more hitters helps negate that. Plus neither Jane or Bridget has to play the front row. You do burn up more subs, which also might have been why Jane played a little front row at the beginning of sets, to save a sub.

The 6-2 allows for 2 Rightside OHs in the rotation subbing in with the 2 setters. And the position that the second Rightside bumps is a DS player. That's why Maggie saw limited action last night. It has nothing to do with her performance, because she has been playing well since last year. It's just a result of changing systems. The same thing happened to Rachel Broerman back in the year we played with 2 setters (Kacie Hausfeld and Hannah Clancy).

I will also say I thought both setters did the best job I've seen this year backsetting. Meaning...setting the ball to the Rightside of the net which is a ball set behind the setter because they are usually facing the left side OHs and the MBs are usually in front of the setter.

This was setting both the Rightside OHs and the MBs when they ran the slide attack. Weaver crushed a ball from the right and both MBs had great slide swings. Best of I've seen all year. We need to run the slide more because it's very hard to block. And we need to run more plays where two hitters are stacked one in front of the other so the block has to guess which hitter is getting the set. Also a play that is very hard to block.

Not sure why people are saying Weaver was injured, she had surgery to remove a cyst. That is a medical condition outside of the sport and not an injury, per se. But either way she missed quite a few matches. TH is high on her.

Also think that first set was competitive as Jane and Bridget were playing competitively together for first time in a while, and our first 6-2 since beginning of the year.
