Flying Right

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Many of us who follow our alma mater’s exploits on the court and the athletic field can be accused of having an advanced case of “Flyer-centricity.”

Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you.

We tend to think of UD as a notch above; a special place that doesn’t look, feel or behave like other university communities. Our basketball team might not win the NCAA Championship, but we can point with pride to the sold-out UD Arena and rightfully say “top that.” UD is a place where the motto “learn, lead and serve” is just as important as “defend, rebound and run.”

The University of Dayton released a video the other day narrated by Flyer alum Jon Gruden entitled “Flying Right” that captures some of the flavor of that uniqueness:

Hopefully we’ll be seeing bits and pieces of this great video in upcoming UD games on national television.

Giving back is a big part of that commitment to “Flying Right.” Former Flyers Darnell Hoskins and Steve Pittman are doing just that at Dayton Thurgood Marshall HS, according to this piece by Marc Pendleton from the DDN:

Elsewhere in what ABC television used to call the “Wide World of Sports”:

-- After BG’s alma mater Oakland University knocked off Tennessee, many college hoops fans were asking themselves the question “where did this Keith Benson kid come from?” I was curious myself and Benson went to high school a mile down the road from my house! AnnArbor.com provides the answer:

-- For the first time since UD won the NIT last spring there were actually some signs of life in Madison Square Garden for a basketball game:

-- How would you like to be an NBA player and get heckled constantly…by your team’s owner! Welcome to Baron Davis’ world:

-- Charles Pierce normally writes for The Boston Globe but crafted this in-depth piece on Patriots WR Wes Welker for Sports Illustrated:

-- It seems Pierce and ESPN.com’s Bill Simmons got into a ‘blog war’ recently, with the Boston-based scribe delivering the coup d’etat to “The Sports Guy” here:

-- I haven’t read Simmons’ tome “The Book of Basketball” but after seeing these disturbing excerpts from it in this blog piece courtesy of BronxBanterBlog.com, let’s just say my overall opinion of “The Sports Guy” has dropped down several notches:

“Pulling the goalie” indeed.

-- Yankee fans everywhere have a severe case of the “whahappeneds?” when you mention the name Cliff Lee:

-- The one and only Joe Posnanski on the recently deceased pitching legend “Rapid Robert” Feller. My dad used to make it a point to be sure to be at Fenway when Feller and the Tribe came to town:

-- When Brett Favre finally does retire, ESPN is going to have to severely alter its programming lineup, according to The Wall Street Journal:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
