espn.com has no rating for him. Found a WKU discussion about him. He visited them about a month ago.

Does an official visit typically mean an offer?

He certainly hasn't had as much press as the others that have been discussed. The recruiting competition is lower caliber schools, and I couldn't find any ratings from the major sites. The news articles and few comments I found on other schools' message boards basically uniformly praised him... mainly for his speed and his shot. I don't know if that means he's flying under the radar or he's just not good enough to be worth the criticism.

He is a pure point guard, which is certainly something we need.

typically yes but it doesn't have to mean that. Obviously the really want a true PG to back up Dillard and have cast the net far and wide.

Actually we need a backup next season for sure, but we need one with pedigree to also replace Dillard in another year just as bad. Hoping we don't have to go the JUCO route to do it.

So the spring signing period is over. Can someone explain the significance of that (if there is one)? Obviously players can commit after that period ( as we are still searching for 2 to 3 guys. So why is there a need for the signing period and how do players who commit after actually sign a letter of intent?

It is nowhere near over. Spring signing period lasts till mid May.

Once it ends it doesn't mean much. Players just can't sign a national letter if intent they can still pick a school and enroll.

High-school basketball | Ohio North-South All-Star games: LeVert’s three at buzzer gives South win (from today's Dispatch)

Until LeVert's final sequence, teammate Jalen Robinson of Northland would have won the MVP honor. He scored 19 of his game-high 30 points in the final 10 minutes. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. LeVert and Robinson were co-players of the year on The Dispatch all-metro team.

After John Groce left Ohio University to be Illinois' coach, LeVert received a release from his Bobcat scholarship and reopened his recruitment. He said he is considering Dayton, Purdue, Michigan, Illinois and Iowa in addition to Ohio. Robinson, a Dayton recruit, said he believes that LeVert will join him.
For what it's worth...

If we snag LeVert is the Sibert transfer really worth it?

If LeVert/Sibert both come on board, I'm assuming we can kiss Taylor goodbye. That last spot must be used for a PG.

Its really too bad we lost Thomas. Thomas/Sibert (or LeVert)/Taylor/Robinson/Scott would be a DREAM class.

I guess Wilbut would be even better, but is that a pipe dream at this point?

Getting a big-time scorer who blew up his senior year, this late in the process would be amazing! LeVert is legit and would be an absolute steal!

It will be very interesting to see what Archie does with this situation because I believe they will only take 1 SG because the other two spots, IMO, are reserved for a PG & Ryan Taylor... Looks like Archie might have to choose between LeVert & Sibert

I would think Archie would opt for LaVert for two reasons: 1) He could help next year, 2) He would be available for 4 years and could really grow into a big time scorer.

Taylor, Scott, Robinson, LaVert, and a PG (Price?) would be a monster class.

I really doubt that would happen, but what do i know lol... We NEED a PG and Levert & Wilbut are only SGs in my opinion... As I said earlier it will probably be a PG, a SG & Ryan Taylor with the last 3... If we don't get Taylor, I believe we will bank the schollie for next year

Any two of Sibert, Taylor, and Levert would be great. But we do need a PG. If Archie liked Khari Price enough for an official visit, he must be pretty good, but his recruiting ratings and offers from other schools are not reassuring.

I have know idea if it is the case, but I would not be suprised if the ratings have geogrpahic bias. It may be that if someone like Price went to HS in IN, IL, MI, OH with a really strong AAU circuit, his ratings would be higher.

In addition to a kid's BB abilities, AM realizes that any recruit really has to be "coach-able", jell with the team and be able to add something other than a warm body. I believe we all recognize that the various rating services are not exactly flawless in their assessment of talent, that some kids peak early or don't get enough exposure, and some aren't willing to work hard to improve their skills or shore up deficiencies. To a degree, recruiting is probably more of an art than a science; yes you need an eye for talent but seeing how a kid will pan out and work within the system, take direction and get along with teammates is something of a crap shoot. AM, while still young and learning the ropes as a HC, appears to be up to the task, so we'll just have to wait and see what develops over the next few weeks. I'm sure he and his staff are beating the bushes for good talented kids and they may come up with a gem or two that haven't even been mentioned yet. Given what AM was able to achieve shortly after his arrival last year, it's probably safe to say that our roster will be deeper than it is now by the time the opening tip takes place in the Fall.

UD fans seem to take the attitude that if a guy comes to UD he's not good enough, if he goes somewhere else UD missed out on a gem.

I know what you're saying, but we can only offer so many. Sometimes they will be like the guy who went to Cleveland State and sometimes they will be. . . just to pick on 1 guy . . . Chris Alvarez. (Not saying he was awful, just not great.) You only get so many chances to find a Brian Roberts.

Someone should make an all-"no BCS" star team of guys who not only didn't go to a BCS school but didn't even get a whiff by a BCS school.

From what I have heard, Archie has been picky on talent signing. He is not content with just having warm bodies on the team. Means he has to fight harder for better talent. Makes this off season signing period a challenge for fans.

In addition, he wants to always have at least one scholarship open in case the hot transfer pops up suddenly.

He has pretty much said he likes to hold one back. Which leads me to believe they only use two unless one is Sibert.

One thing we don't know is, how good is Vee Sanford? I have read the reports that he has looked good. Also, can he play point? Without knowing these answers, I think we have to get the best PG or Combo guard available even if he is not at the level that we covet. So even if we get Lavert, we still need insurance to back up Dillard.

The more I read about Caris, the better he looks. Definitely hoping he ends up a Flyer.

according to one school of thought, not very, since his stats at GU aren't much to speak of. Like Sibert.

At GU, Vee played behind Chris Wright. I read where he was penciled in as last years starter before he transferred.

For what it's worth, Google says Vee is a point guard:

"vee sanford" "shooting guard": About 3,180 results
"vee sanford" "point guard": About 14,000 results

Archie knows whether or not Vee can play the point for us. If he can, Archie might not feel that a PG is an absolute must this year.

Vee's stats at Georgetown were fine - he just didn't get much playing time. He only played about 6mpg, but at the same rate if you figure about 18mpg (bad assumption, I know, bit's what we have), his stats would be something like...

6.6 ppg, 2.3rpg, 1.1apg, 60% 3fg, 52%fg, 1.0spg.

Not all star caliber, but a solid contributor. (Well, it's all-star caliber if that 60% on threes could hold up, but of course it wouldn't.)

On the other hand, from what I read on GU message boards when he left, some people seemed to not care... they didn't think he was good enough for GU. Hard to read much into that, though. He wasn't getting much PT, so the fans didn't really know how good he was or wasn't. And neither do we.

I will say his GU stats look quite a bit better than Sibert's stats at OSU. I'd be happy to take Sibert regardless, but right now I'd put both Taylor and Levert ahead of him on my wish-list.

I don't know if Sanford can play point, but Archie is impressed with his shooting skills.

“Having him next year hit the floor running, not to say he’ll be a great player early because he’ll have to work through his bumps, but he’s as talented a guard as we have scoring the ball. He can really shoot. He can really play off the dribble. And as a scorer, he’s a guy who’s going to be able to give us double figures — easy.”

The comments I read on the GU message board about Sanford were positive with a lot of posters looking forward to him starting next year. They seemed to really like him as a person. But, as FlyingArrow said, there were also posters who didn't care that he left....probably because of his lack of playing time and not knowing if he would be able to contribute.

How much more time is there? Don't all schools bring in their freshman for summer classes and workouts?

Vee can play point as well. He will be more than serviceable as a backup to Dillard. I am thinking that best guard available is the real need. The wish is probably for one of each position however (1 pg and 1 sg). All things equal go with PG because of flexibility for derenbecker or Oliver to play some SG

there was an article (in the DDN I think) a week or so ago where Taylor says he wants to make a decision quickly, so as to not drag out the process too long. Which is true, I don't know, perhaps he's ready to committ, his uncle wants him to hold off.

I imagine most, if not all schools bring their freshman in for summer classes. At UD, I think its typically for the 2nd summer session, which if memory serves me correct is like mid-june. Most HS don't graduate for another couple of weeks, some colleges like Ohio State don't get out of school until June, so there is still several more weeks that Taylor could wait things out, and still get into college at the same time as the rest of the people in his recruiting class.

You're correct. In a DDN article he said he doesn't plan to prolong his decision because we doesn't want to hold up a scholarship that could go to another player.

I really was hoping for Levert, Taylor, and Wilbut/Sibert.

I thought Levert would be enough of a combo that he and Vee on the floor together could handle PG duties, esp against pressure.

If Levert is not an option or not likely, wondering if Moore is the guy?
High risk of recruiting over him. But valuing him for his versitility, short term ... and long.
The joys of being a Flyer fan continue for the upcoming weeks (and months) ...

I don't understand Iowa. From what I have read, Michigan is option due to a current team mate. Purdue I understand. But Iowa??? really?

Don't think Moore is an option at this point.

We'll see on Levert. If he takes a visit there is still a shot.

But if we have another season with a short bench, isn't there a chance we can go backwards? I'm not sure how most fans would feel about another 1 and done NIT run (or worse)

Or he could be one of the good ones who left a 'BCS' school with numbers that weren't very good but had strong numbers at his new school (i.e. UCLA to UNLV, Mike Moser)

Yes, however their program has hit a spell like we had in the '90's. Iowa does not have a good rep lately but they are working on it and they are still in the B10. One can never tell what floats the boat for young recruits. Logic often goes out the window.

Along that line, I don't even get why a recruit would go to OSU knowing he is likely to ride the pine for 4 years. I guess maybe it's the initial ego trip for him and his posse.

More info just posted on Levert. He is hearing from "some A10 schools" in addition to the Big Ten. "Baby Durant" will probably make his decision in the next month.

By now every kid should be going into OSU knowing that Matta will only give 7 or so significant minutes each season. It is probably hard for many of these kids to realistically assess their skill level as to whether they are going to be one of those 7, in the first couple of years or ever. Or maybe they think they will be okay with sitting on the bench of a major program - I am sure none of them have ever experienced the feeling.

The athletes also have a lot of people whispering in their ear "You are too good for that school, you should be playing in the Big Ten" Many of the people whispering in their ears are only after having their own egos stroked by where a player plays, they really aren't that worried about the player's best interests. Even parents are after that same feeling of bragging where their kid signed, even if they aren't going to play much.

It doesn't sound good re: Levert - we aren't even getting mentioned, which is a bummer.

And I don't like the silence re Ryan Taylor. The last article in the DDN made it sound like we were close. Did anyone ever figure out the timing of his official visit?

Welcome Khari! Excellent pickup... a kid that can come in and spell KD for a few minutes here and there

Then in 2013... Go after an elite PG to fill KD's shoes... you never know Khari might be that guy!

Welcome to UD young man... A Diamond in the rough

Taylor took his test. But, doesn't he have to wait until he receives a score before making a visit? If so, how long does that take? If we can add Taylor at this point we will have what appears to be a great class with one more for a transfer.

i've been confused here as well, i thought you needed a qualifying score to take an official visit, but also have read you just have to take the test or something.

I think we are set for next year, but any one (or two) of Sibert, Taylor, or Levert would be great. I think they could make an impact this year, too.

We got what we desperately needed. A pure point who thinks he can spell Dillard next season, and then develop into a Dillard for 3 years after that. We did not need a combo.
Now can he? Stay tuned, but you have to like his confidence. He said he likes to play both ends of the floor, and his coach says he can really shoot.

The commitment of KP (a kid no one really heard of until recently) is another indication of how AM and his staff have been working diligently behind the scenes to attract quality kids to UD. This is especially the case in light of the curve ball thrown by the recent loss of JT. While the period for signing and enrolling kids is getting short, it appears AM still has some very good prospects considering UD and it will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the end, but you can't sell AM short in this regard. KP seems like a really good "get", not only talent wise, but also on a personal level.

Just to clarify, there really is no deadline, as a kid can still sign after the late signing period ends in May.

I don't remember or really wasn't that engaged back then but is this kind of like when BG got London Warren? If Price ends up as good of a player as London ended up, I will be satisfied. I would still want another (and better) pg but as a back-up pg, a london quaility pg is acceptable.

Mislav Brzoja, a 6'5 SG, is visiting UD very soon. He is visiting Kentucky today and also plans on visiting Marquette. Once again, UD is mixing it up with the big boys. Here is a highlight reel on YouTube. He has a strange shooting style but it does seem to work well for him.

Wow that kid does not miss and good size, but no hops. He shoots from his chest which will be a problem in college.

He reminds me of Damon Goodwin.

I actually think he has a very nice stroke. He does shoot a bit lower into his chest than a true jump shot, but the stroke is nice and his release is quick. I like this young man. He does indeed remind of Damon Goodwin, although Damon did shoot a little bit higher than Brzoja's chest or neck level shot. Defense could be an issue, but his height would be a plus at the 2 or 3.

he strikes me as a shooter who grew up idolizing drazen petrovic. for those of you who don't know him or can't remember his game, he was one of the greatest shooters in nba history. the guy could stroke it. if he had played college ball in the states, he would have been a household name. mislav may shoot lower than drazen, but he shows the same confidence in shooting the ball. consistent form and no reluctance. we haven't had a prolific zone breaker in years. mislav may be a guy who torches zones!

Brzoja, Taylor, Levert, and Sibert. Two scholarships, and there's a chance that Archie wants to hold one back. Seems like anyone who likes UD should say yes before they lose their chance.

Need To Recruit BIG

I'm sorry folks, but I am hoping that one of Dayton's final scholarships goes to a big guy. We have only one center. If due to foul trouble or injury, Dayton could be playing a guy who weighes 228 at center. That is too skinny to be competitive. Dayton needs to recruit someone 6'10" and 240 or bigger, who can play now.

I think you're going to be disappointed.

Now that Andrew Nicholson and Frease are gone, who do you fear in the A-10 at the 5 that the combination of Kavs, Alex and Devon Scott cannot handle?

We need guards, plain and simple.

Swampy Meadows,
Good question. Here is my research on the teams and players that will be bigger than Dayton under the boards. If Dayton continues to not recruit a big dude.

St. Louis - Rob Loe 6-11 240, Cody Ellis 6-8 240, John Manning 6-11 230
St. Joe - Halil Kanacevic 6-8 258
Charlotte - Ivankovic 6-10 250, Thorne 6-10 244
St. Bona - Ndoye 6-11 235
Richmond - Piotrowski 6-11 240
Mass - McCarthy 7-1 240
Rhode - Shengelia 6-9 260, Vedder 7-3 230

Plus this year's recruits.
Why can't Dayton recruit some heft with one of these scholarships?

I agree that we will need some big guys next year, but this year we will already have: 6'9 250, 6'9 230, 6'9 225, 6'8 230, 6'8 225. I guess i am more concerned with having only 3 guards on the whole roster. Only two that are proven performers. That being said, I fully expect to see a top 40 true center in the neighborhood of 6'10 240 signed for 2013/14. If we don't get one I would be disappointed as well.

You can't simply look at height and weight when looking at a player. Literally not one of these names (or group of names) scare me at all. I would much rather have kavs, gav, benson, robinson and scott down low then any of these groups.

We do not need another big man this year at all, we need guards. Sure we will need a big man next year. which is why there are big men archie is recruiting for next year!

With Matt Kavanaugh and Josh Benson graduating next year, I think big centers and power forwards should be on our Christmas list for 2013.

This is interesting. I thought we would be begging to get someone on board, and all of a sudden we have some very good options. I suppose at this point, it would be excellent to sign Sibert and Levert. I am just wondering if Taylor or some of the others are still in the mix. I think Levert would be the better get at this point because of being able to play immediately.

As far as 2012-13 is concerned, if we could get Taylor and either of the "erts" (LeV-ert or Sib-ert), I think we'd be in good/great shape for next year, given who else is already in the mix. For next year, we definitely need some height/muscle to replace JB & MK. Morgan would be an ideal fit, and probably get 15-20 minutes a game right from the start. Beyond that, a lanky, shot-blocker type (to replace JB's springs) would be a nice fit.

Ahh, these are nice problems to have...

Nothing too new regarding Taylor's decision but the local Louisville paper has an update at the bottom of this article.

That's several times, I believe, over the past week or two that Demerling has posted that info about Taylor. Lazy journalism?

I think that Taylor and teams recruiting him must be waiting on the ACT score for the test he just took April 14. Usually takes 3-4 weeks to get the score.

Doug Harris reports that Sibert has UD high on his list. The article doesn't indicate whether or not Doug is the person that spoke with him. Sibert says he is considering visiting X and Missouri.

Taylor Barnette from Lexington has been viewed as the best shooting guard to come out of Kentucky this past year. He has been let out of his LOI at Central Florida and is looking to visit UD, Miami (OH), and VCU. But he's visiting UVA first this week. He would be eligible to play this season and projects as a combo guard.

Info is from the UVA beat writer:

Here is another article. Looks like Barnette is currently in Oxford and will be in Charlottesville Thursday. Perhaps, he could find time to check out Dayton in between?

http://blogs.courier-journal.com/jod...making-visits/

Edit: Saw a tweet that Barnette will have 2 official visits left after Miami and UVA.

read an article that makes it sound like he asked for his release because he'd struggle to get playing time as a freshman. another article quoted him as saying that he chose ucf because of the chance to get pt as a frosh. ucf seemed to pick up some guys that would make it tougher. he also mentions that he brings the ability to stroke it in transition. i think kd could get the ball in the hands of someone like that!

What is going on with kedar Edwards? Seems like he has fallen off the radar. It seemed like he was close to committing about a month ago. Some of the others we have in the mix seem like slightly better targets, but I though Edwards would have been a good addition as well.

Yup. Given the recruitment of those two and also the fact the coaching staff has apparently been in contact with the Miami OH transfer, Brian Sullivan, makes it very clear that securing a perimiter shooter is a top priority.

Mislav Brzoja will be on campus today and tomorrow. He visited UK last week but speculation is that UK has decided not to offer him a scholarship. Probably because Calipari is striving for his entire roster to be one and dones.
