Maybe It's Better This Way

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- It doesn’t matter the destination of Archie Miller’s annual four-day Flyer “business trip” -- Anaheim, Maui, Charleston or Orlando -- the desired outcome is always the same:

Win the danged thing!

Let’s face it, only one team is gonna come home from any particular holiday basketball tournament 3-0; conversely, one squad will finish 0-3; three programs will go 2-1 and another trio will depart 1-2.

Obviously, we would have all loved it if UD had beaten Nebraska, but that would have set up a tilt vs. powerful UCLA on short rest and having to contend with their all-world freshman PG Lonzo Ball. Even Captain Optimism here realizes that was not a game that Dayton probably was going to win, given the roster’s current configuration. Better to face a scrappy Portland squad and then finish with another W over New Mexico, leaving LA 2-1 for the tourney.

While theoretically UCLA might have provided an RPI lift, I think we would all agree that given the Red & Blue’s banged up condition, it’s all about the Ws for Archie’s guys from now until March.

Taking a look at our very own highly accurate UD Pride RPI Rankings, the Hilltoppers are currently #20, with an SoS of 7:

Looks to me like losing to the Cornhuskers and beating Portland and UNM didn’t tarnish the Flyer resume at all.

Checking in with Ken Pomeroy provides some equally interesting datapoints:

Your Dayton Flyers currently rank:

#41 overall
#39 in Adjusted Offense
#41 in Adjusted Defense
#59 in Non-Con SoS
#278 in Luck Factor

I guess losing two games at the last minute to a very good St. Mary’s squad and a decent Nebraska team certainly qualifies as lacking in the luck department.

So far the Atlantic 10 isn’t exactly lighting things up in the Non-Con and it is reflected in the members’ RPI rankings. According to a David Jablonski tweet:

Dayton 22
Davidson 30
VCU 32
Rhodey 49
St Bonnie 67
UMass 72
St Joe 98
LaSalle 116
Fordham 200
GMU 211
Richmond 219
Duquesne 225
St Louis 296
GW 312
