Question East Carolina 3 Dayton 2 (OT)

Flyers got down 1-0, tied it at 1-1, gave up a goal immediately after, tied it at 2-2 a short time later, and lost in the first couple minutes of overtime 3-2.

The three goals surrendered were pretty sloppy. First goal was literally two ECU players getting behind the UD back line 30 yards from goal. Easiest goal I have ever seen in college soccer. If we were attempting an offside trap, it didnt work.

We tied it up on a very good set piece goal that ended up as a redirect in the box in the second half. The second ECU goal was a scrum on the UD goal line. We got out-fought/out-muscled for it and our defense/clearance was not up to par.

Another good UD goal on another cross in box that Collie finished with a header.

OT goal by ECU was a 25yd shot off crossbar. UD failed to clear, got beat on another loose ball, and ECU knocked it in. Game ended 3-2 but it could have easily been 5-2. Johns saved a couple point blank ECU chances that ECU should have finished.

Overall, UD lost all phases: passing, trapping, 1v1 defending, defending in space, 50/50 challenges, high-ball challenges, spacing, possession. Pirates showcased better talent. More physical, faster, better foot skills. Which is not a great sign considering ECU was 5-12-2 last year.

Only one frosh played (Henderson 8 minutes) in this game. That concerns me. If we're this suspect in depth/talent and can only get 1 frosh on the field for token time, that's not a great sign for the frosh. Unless Golz just didnt want to put too much pressure on the frosh class. But, I cant ever remember a season in which a frosh didnt start the season opener -- and those were all years with far more returning talent. I wouldnt read too much into this YET. But, worth filing away under "hmm".

UD only played 4 subs. ECU played 9. That tells me so few on the Flyer bench are even serviceable. Not like Williams, Campbell, Libertin, Garcia, Giner, Waters, Kenyon, and Beljan are out there hogging all the playing time. The minutes are there for the taking. Aside from the Kiehlster and Pestell, dynamic playmaking is in short supply. I do have faith Mink and Livingston can get it going -- they were unstoppable in the A10 Final. If they play like that every day they are All-Conference players. But they need to be that consistent offensive threat on every touch of the ball now that they are sophs.

We play UNC-Wilmington on Sunday. UNCW lost only 2-0 to #11 Virginia at home tonight. Shots were just 5-2 Cavaliers so pretty darn competitive. Wilmington set an attendance record. We will have our hands completely full.

On another note, St. Louis blitzed Miami OH 3-0 tonight and out-shot them 24-2. Miami dominated us in the exhibition last week and beat us 4-2.

The good news is there's nowhere to go but up. One game does not make a season so lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. Friday night was a continuation of the preseason, but we're dealing with a new coaching staff, new style, new way of running the show. We need to give this team some time. But it may get worse before it gets better.

Sunday is a chance to turn it around and get a good W against a decent squad. Nobody is gonna feel sorry for us so you might as well get a W if you're going to the trouble of playing the game. But we gotta actually defend and mark up. We didnt mark anybody tonight. 10 yard cushions everywhere.
