Marquette
They certainly can score. They have a superstar do it all guard ( Blockton) the kind that can give us fits, scoring, rebounding, etc. Our success will likely depend on limiting her. A big challenge defensively.

Hoping they win this one to make the drive home a lot sweeter!

Scaife was totally winded those last two minutes. Cannatelli was a hot mess at point guard, as she did nothing but dribble and then pick up her dribble and get trapped.
We are down 7 shooting 77% to Marquette 33%. Why? 9 turnovers.

Obvious Shauna needs recruit point guards for next year. Lauren is not a point guard, poor handle and poor decisions. Need her at the 2 guard.

I do not understand us trying to play so fast. We cannot outrun this team. Run the offense, and stop with the unforced turnovers in the backcourt.

13 fouls and 16 turnovers says it all.
I do not understand Ward. You have a D1 scholly on a good team and some good skills, yet you have not lost any of that 20 pounds that you wear like an anchor.

I have to say our big problem is what Maddog alluded to, when you get away with soft passes and turnovers and ole defense against the likes of LaSalle and Davidson, it becomes a bad habit.

No one said it was but to be fair once in your life acknowledge Laurens deficiencies. We are objective and point out Jennas Wards etc deficiencies and not just lauren.
In real world one commends good work and critsizes poor work.
Lauren needs to play to her strengths as do all players. And Jenna just isn't playing smart for a senior.

We have given up 22, 23 and 24 points in the three quarters. It may have seemed like we played better that quarter, because we did not turn it over as much, but pathetic defense!

No argument there but when you are pressed into service out of need much like Kelley Austria was then you at least need be serviceable.
Our two Juco guards and Ward so far are busts.
Shauna has done great with what she inheireted but next year the juniors, soph and freshmen are hers.

Unfortunately lauren can't create her own shots and needs set pieces like most of the flyers. Scaife is the only true player capable of that. Jenna and Layfield to some degree.

Wow, Green was ticked. She barely acknowledge the M coach's handshake. M coach tried to say something and Green was gone. Just so frustrating to have a decent team and see them lay an egg. Hopefully, a learning experience toward better recruiting, defense and ball control.

This team would have been middle of the pack in the NBE. Jenna was a much better point guard as a freshman but then she had a great supporting cast.
Onward and hopefully upward.
Ward needs to prove she was a 5 star. The two Juco guards are not D1 level. Giaconni hopefully will be ready to play. Love Maddy Dennis but she is not all that serviceable.
Will have to rely on Scaife Lauren and incoming recruits.

Who is the other Juco guard? Szabo is a walk-on. Shakeela Fowler is a 5'6" point sitting a year after a transfer from Ill St and a junior college. She averaged 11 pts, 3-4 assists and 2 steals. She was on the all-frosh team at IL St.
Neither Fowler or Giancone will make us forget Jenna, who was the best PG ever at UD. If they can handle the ball without turnovers and play D, we should be happy next year. And splitting the 40 minutes will be better than playing Jenna all 40.

This is pretty much of what I expected. This present flyer team is not built for what Marquette brought to the table. Jenna gets exposed and Lauren is not adept to play point guard against this type of opponent. The supporting cast with Jenna on the Flyer team that went to the Elite 8 was truly just better for this type of opponent. I hope Shauna goes out and gets those type of players...she was an assistant on that team, so she knows what the needs are, especially if you want to get into the second weekend. Happy for the Flyers! I just felt like this matchup would be too tough.

Jack Bradshaw is sitting out a year for transfer rules. Flower and Phillips are listed as Juniors. Both came from Community colleges and we're available to play this year.
Chandler and Bradshaw are the only two listed as r-sophmores, sitting out this year.

Thanks. I forgot about Arion Bradshaw, the 5'6" transfer from a great program at SC, and a proven D1 player.
So the second Jr college is Fowler, who has already played well on a D1 team. I think Fowler has to sit a year because she played a year of D1. The same as the men's guard, Andres Sandoval, we had about 10 years ago, who started at Richmond, then Jr college, then a year sitting at UD. Someone correct me if that is wrong.
We may be suspicious of 5'6" PG, but that little guard tore us up today. So we have 3 PG's for next year, all with D1 experience.

Yes thats how I remember it.
Jack Flowler played D1 then went Juco for a year instead of sitting out a year so she was eligible this year. Assume she now gets a medical redshirt year. We may be better off at guard next year than I realize. Hope so, some quality recruits and returning players should make for another A10 run.

Dayton had 16 assists and 45 turnovers in the postseason. The product on the court reflected it too. Its been a decade-long ball-and-chain for the program that predates Shauna. For the program to take a step forward and reach the next level we must develop much better ball security habits -- passing, dribbling, and court vision/awareness. You cannot be Santa Claus in the meaningful games and expect the results you're seeking when you dont protect the rock.
Marquette had 17 more shots that we did just 15 minutes into the game. We cant blame it on being tired or a short bench because Marquette basically played the sized rotation the same minutes. Must get quicker, more athletic, and faster-twitch.
They provided the clear blueprint as to how we are probably attempting to sculpt our own program in terms of playing style. But you must have the athletes to do it.
Not a good day at the office obviously. We got beat by a much better team. We probably commit 15 TOs against Marquette in every game if we played them 20 times. Given our severe personnel limitations, short bench, etc, I think we more or less maxed out our talent level. We had solid talent but not great. This was not 2014 with Malott, Hoover, Deane, Austria, Cornelie, etc. We had some major limitations. Even our starters had some obvious weaknesses. To go 23-7 and win the A10 outright and still get an NCAA at-large #9 seed is about as good as I think anyone can realistically expect.
That said, it shouldnt be good enough moving forward. We need to continue to improve talent levels, develop better fundamentals and good basketball IQ habits and show pronounced improvement in the weaknesses that have been program weaknesses for 8-10 years. As more kids graduate, more of the team will be Shauna's roster and blueprint. The departing seniors are still Jabir kids. Shauna will have to prove she can not only maintain the status quo with her own recruits, but elevate the program.

Add to it some kids with defensive intensity. None of our five starters are great defenders. We turned the ball over a bunch, because we throw bad passes and make bad decisions, but M was responsible for many of those because they played great D. To get to the next level we need athletes, who want to play defense almost every play.

Really disappointing to see the ladies play so poorly in an important tournament game. Obviously, the second foul on Burdette was a huge momentum swing. Both her first and second fouls were just plain dumb. She should have been smarter.
We made Hiedeman look like an All-American. She is very good, but she scored 18 points in the first quarter alone! If Shauna had it to do over again, she might put Layfield on her as a defender
Defensively, we were just so slow and not moving our feet to keep players in front of us.
Still, 16 freakin turnovers in the first half, and 19 overall, is just abysmal. Everybody on the floor was to blame. Most disappointing, we just absolutely wilted under the Marquette pressure
All the above being said, we probably pretty much maxed out this year for our talent level, injuries, and very very thin bench.

Great credentials in HS but hardly "proven". She's scored 5- FIVE - career baskets!
