Who besides Bruns ?

Just looked at individual stats for the Kansas game. It appears Kansas's 2nd,,3rd and 4th attackers were superior to ours. Some one needs to improve soon or VCU may walk to the A10 championship and NCAA tournament bid.

Hope Weaver just had a really poor game. Is Moore good enough to play OH opposite Bruns, or is she just a MB? If so (OH), this would also give us two good front blockers.

The good news is that we did about as good against Kansas as Kentucky did last week.

Wow getting schooled by Ky. Down 2 sets to 0.

Even announcers said TH team just crumbled in the 2nd set. Kinda started late first set. Or more correctly in three 4th and 5th sets of first match.

Not what TH was expecting.

Let's see if they can recover after intermission. Kendle Brown totally out of sync. Without her were toast.

UD goes down in 3rd set like they did in 2nd set. Totally dominated by Ky.

Back row defense was like sieve, blockers up front not much better.

Well back to basics. See if they can recover tomorrow against College if Charleston. TH not a happy camper.

It's not good when bad mo continues from first match in the morning.

Ky lost all 3 matches the first weekend working out their flaws. These are the kind of opponents you want to face in non conference. They have a great video to break down our weaknesses. I'm sure they will learn from it.
Was good to see Jamie on the sidelines and traveling with the team.here's hoping her pregnancy goes well, gets her vball body back along with another year of eligibility.

Who besides BRUNS - update

Against Kentucky, LB had 9k's on 34 TA's and 4 E's. The next highest Flyer against Kentucky (I believe Brooke) had 7 K's on 14 TA's and 1 E.

The word is out, especially for #13 ranked Washington and #14 ranked Pittsburgh coming up soon on the schedule. (note - I used their rankings per the Dayton Flyers women's volleyball schedule as of today which may be rankings before season started). If you have good team, stop, or at lest slow, LB and you should win.

Is Weaver somewhat hurt or just "out of sync" ?

The good news is that Dayton got real close to beating Kansas which had beaten Kentucky this season. Also, Kansas, Kentucky, Washington and Pittsburgh are probably all better than the rest of the A-10 except VCU.

The bad news is our OAC record will probably preclude an NCAA tournament spot unless we win the A-10 tournament.

After first two weeks UD is 4-2
KY is 3-3
Kansas is 3-2
COC IS 2-4.

This was a really good tournament. Like the announcer statef, each of the teams looked like top 10 teams at times and at others didn't look like they belonged in D1.

Good that teams got to see their strengths and weaknesses.
Not much time bofore Miami match on Tuesday.

I don’t necessarily agree with all this. First it’s hard to evaluate a lot of this with 2 of our 6 matches not being video streamed. “Watching” live stats play by play is limiting. However I have been nothing but impressed by our freshmen that have played so far this year. A whole bunch of this clas are the real deal. Amelia is a clear front runner for A10 ROY. She can swing and she can block both big time already. Allie struggled a little this past weekend, as all freshmen do after teams have some game film to watch on a hitter. But her arm swing is amazing and so far she looks more advanced as a freshman hitter than both Kray and Alaina did. Both those two ended their careers as POYs. Retry good company.

Maura has been steady and the KY announcers said they talked to Assistant coach Alyssa - who was an All-American Libero at Penn State. Alyssa, who sees Maura everyday in practice and who knows a heck of a lot more about player evaluations and development than any of us says Maura is farther along as a freshman than she was her freshman year when she started for PSU and won the National Championship.

Mikaylah got in some quality court time this past weekend and play lights out. Molly got in some quality court time this past weekend and played lights out. Liz was in the starting rotation last weekend and teams went after her on serve receive and she struggled a little. That happens to even seniors and I believe she will bounce back and work thru it. And Josie looked pretty good setting when she got on the court.

Here is the bottom line. We have a LOT of young talent that will continue to get better as this season goes on. We’re going to take some lumps against some very good elite teams this pre-conference. But we are far from a one-horse show. Brooke has never played better. Lauren has taken her game to an unbelievable level, even against some elite teams. Margo is not only getting it done in the backrow she is helping both Maura and Liz adjust to the college game. I’ve seen her several time directing these young players.

Sierra is being asked to play a new position to help the team. There are adjustments that take some time. Bridget is holding her own in a two setter offense as a sophomore. We are very talented, but young. It takes time to implement everything when you have youth and/or new players.

Here is a point of reference: in 2010, to date our best team ever, we had transfer setter Yang who had played at Penn State and NE. We played an elite pre-conference schedule at both Minnesota and Nebraska. When we arrived at Minn, which was our 2nd week, Yang and the MBs Fletemeier and Novacek had NOT had enough time to work on a lot of their sets and it showed. Both Lindsay and Becky struggled offensively because Jessica couldn’t set the quick, low set to Lindsay in front of her and she wasn’t a great back setter to set Becky the slide behind her. Before leaving MN, Sheffield told both the middles they would work on these plays the next week in practice because it just wasn’t there yet. Yanz and Fletemeier were 5th year players. Novacek was in her 4th year. Compare that to the number of players we have that are in the rotation that have two weeks of D1 experience.

I think this schedule is the toughest we’ve ever had and I think it’s going play big time dividends in November.

I liked the story the announcers told regarding TH. They reiterated how TH got his first vball coaching job at a local HS. He said he didn't know what he was doing but was so successful he got the Robert Morris job. Says he still quite know what he was doing but again was so successful he got the Dayton job.
Five years at Dayton understanding the game more he was so successful he took the Maryland job. Five years at Maryland he was so frustrated the their lack of support and his record showed it that he told his wife he was through with coaching vball. That he'd only coach vball again at Dayton.
Fortunately for TH and UD Sheffield left for Wisconsin and the interim coach contract was not renewed after one year. And now we're seeing UD returning to its former self with higher goals in mind.

One other hopeful stat: we're out-blocking opponents 60.0 to 33.0 so far. The Flyers have outblocked every opponent except Kentucky and the UK match was a low-blocking affair (3.0 to 2.0).

In my opinion good blocking teams have a chance to always be pretty decent. Defense at the net steers matches and gets into the opposing team's head. Some of that is probably swapping Jane for Westbeld in the front rotation, and then adding Moore. Erhahon was not much of block specialist so having Moore in there with Brown has probably helped here too. Not saying Moore is where Erhahon was as a total talent but Moore is just a frosh and has 4yrs to get better.

The Charleston win was a huge W that salvaged the weekend. I dont think we could spin it any other way but disaster had we not gotten something out of the three matches. Had we beaten Kansas, coming out 2-1 would have been best case scenario in all likelihood and have us in the NCAAs right now. As it stands, we probably treaded water -- didnt help or hurt ourselves. In other words, the remaining non-con matches are all the more important. We need to scalp Washington or Pitt -- 1-1 is a must. If you are an NCAA at-large tourney squad, you win one. I dont think whiffing on all the major beef and then beating say Tennessee and/or OSU at home will be enough. You need a standout W somewhere that resonates nationally and a PAC12 school or Pitt on their home floor would definitely do that.

Not sure what happened in game 2 vs Charleston. Their side-out % was 12-14 (85%). I dont think I have ever seen that before against a UD team.

Update to my post # 5 above

Per the "2018 A10 wk# 3 post of udist19

Pittsburgh sweeps VCU (on a neutral court).

I still think Pittsburgh will key their blocking on Lauren Bruns.
Will others be ready to help or will this be a "Kentucky" game again. Especially since the game before, Washington, should be a tough one, just like Kansas was before Kentucky.

Outside confirmation - Bruns effect

Per BeckysTXA - TN thread "I saw a quote by the Washington coach after our match and they keyed on Lauren."

Lauren's stats from that game - 26 K's, 4 E's, 55 TSA's and a .400 Pct.

Unfortunately, Pitt probably paid attention.

Bruns - final stats

Just noticed that Lauren Bruns had almost 200 (199 I think) more kills for this season, than the next best Flyer.

Still wonder if she could have played varsity women's basketball at Dayton.

Hope she has a few more great games in her.
