2019 coaching carousel

The 2nd bigger job this year(also UCLA)just came open.

Billy Kennedy out at Texas A&M after 8 years...2 NCAAT(2016 and 2018, both Sweet 16's)and 1 NIT(2015).

BK did not do as well as his predecessor, Mark Turgeon, in terms of NCAAT appearances, perhaps that played a role.

I suppose that this might cause a domino effect at other schools.

Ohio U. fires Saul Phillips...5 years, no NCAAT or NIT...he could not continue the momentum that the program had after John Groce and Jim Christian.

Some one should tell Hoopdirt that Temple is no longer in A-10.

Skinner fired from Kennesaw State is heading in wrong direction. Played at UMass and NY Nets with Julius Erving. Assistant at Marist College, head coach at Rhode Island and Boston College. Fired from BC and at Kennesaw for a while. Now out of work. What's next high school?

Word on the street about Skinner at BC was that his work ethic was nothing to speak of...wasn't in early and didn't stay late. Not a good formula for a college basketball coach.

I heard that he did not like to do all the schmoozing with the donors/alumni/media either, which is a big? part of these jobs.

I think if Texas loses to Kansas, and does not make the NCAA, Shaka could be history.

Well UT did lose and there is no way they make the NCAA but Idoubt based on what I'm hearing out of Austin, too big of a buyout and nobody "big enough" out there to lure to Austin

AD gives Shaka one more year but if it looks like this season with dwindling attendance, bet on it. Remember UT is building a new arena that will be online I think in 21

If they were smart they would go begging to Mike Lonnergan to see if he wants his old job back. I recall reading a rather lengthy article about their AD who sabotaged Lonnergan. In the past year, the fraudster was exposed and got canned. Lonnergan had GW on the rise.

Richmond hc Chris Mooney is returning next season. They probably can not afford to fire him, he is signed thru 2021.

I figured that buyout clause would be an overriding factor. But, when they balance payback vs. buyout, if Richmond doesn’t have at least a bit of a rebound next year, then that changes the equation (cost to buyout vs. expected losses if not bought-out).

Hard to believe. Neighbors, Liberty, VCU and UVA, are dancing, while Richmond does not for 8 straight years. UD fans would have lost their minds about four years ago.

Exactly what I thought. Looking at his record the past 3 years gave me a feeling I had just gotten in a time machine and it was 1989 again

Hope for the best for Phil, always thought he was a first class guy

I kind of think it was "time for Phil to go" but I'm surprised they actually did it. Despite being in Philly, I can't imagine that is the easiest place to win at. You are in direct competition with all the pro sports teams as well as Nova and Temple for eyeballs (not to mention the few people that drift LaSalle, Penn or Drexel's way), smaller gym, etc...

If I was an AD, I'd reach out to the Scot Nagy at Wright St (I'm still in shock that they pulled him away from SD state) and John Brenan (NKU). Neither has ties to the east coast, Brennan grew up in Northern Kentucky, was on Grant's staff at Bama, and took over as coach for the postseason when Grant was fired. Nagy is like 52, spent most of his carrer at SD state, as an uber successful D2 school then transitioning them to D1 and having a nice run in D1 before heading to WSU. Both make roughly 500k, can SJU afford to offer either (or anyone) 1 mil? It would surprise me to see either of those coaches get a good offer this offseason to a P5 program.

I summer in Stone Harbor, NJ an upscale beach town with plenty of Philly and PA traffic. Swampy and his tribe have spent many a summer vacation there. Last year I was early AM Beach walking and who's coming the other way but coach Phil. He stops me when he sees my UD shirt and comments that I am a long way from home. I inform him that Flyers are everywhere. He said he loved playing in our house because the fans are the most knowledgeable in the A10. Commented how pleased he is that the Pine Club stays open late and that he has a tough time submitting an expense from there without a CC receipt. Wished him good luck next season but not too much luck.

Looks like I may be seeing more of him this summer.

By the way he is beyond pale, he's translucent. I hope he had SP 50 on. Years ago I would run into Joe Pa on the same Beach as he had a summer home in Avalon, NJ.

Naw, it must be because all their hoops coaches suck. I mean, AG coached there, and he sucks (according to a vocal minority on this board), so...

And what does Avery Johnson know about basketball?! Just because he was the starting PG on an NBA Championship team (San Antonio, 1999) and was voted NBA Coach of the Year (Dallas Mavericks, 2006)...

Avery Johnson may be just one of those guys who just because they were very good basketball players, can't teach others or coach. See Al Skinner. Basketball will always be a second fiddle to football but still should have little problem recruiting. What would I know way up in NJ

True but Alabama publicly said they were putting more effort and resources into the basketball program when they hired Avery, so he did less with more.

Fired in his first face to face meeting with the new AD that started last month. Bad move in my opinion. He lost his lottery pick PG 5 games in and lost another starter. I understand they had a bad year, but they were bringing in the best class in program history this year. Unless they make a huge move, those guys will be gone. Not a good look for the new AD.

The fact of the matter is, just about every P5 + AAC and NBE AD expects to be in the NCAA every year. They get 35-40 actual spots. That puts a lot of guys in a dead end situation. It just proves that it isn't enough to be in a big conference. You have to win and win consistently or you are gone.

Aside from the Duke's, North Carolina's, UK's and KU, what is the average life span of coaches in the P5+?

Boy, that is true. AG had a better coaching record than Avery Johnson at Alabama. 'Bama is just a hard place to coach with a lot of success. Mark Gottfried had a couple of very successful seasons there (8 loss seasons) but he then immediately regressed back to 17-18 win seasons. Gottfried probably starting his impermissible actions at 'Bama. "He's always been a great recruiter".

Alabama just had 2k fans show up for the NIT loss. Their arena holds 15k. I think AG is pretty happy with how everything turned out .

I understand the injury to Darius Garland and Vandy went 0-18 in the SEC this year. ZERO and EIGHTEEN. Drew brought in two 5 stars this year and another 4 star who was the 64th best recruit in the county. They didn't win an SEC game this year. He also had atleast 2 more 4 star guys on the roster this year. That's coaching...

The success of Belmont right next door probably did not sit well with Vandy fans and administration.

We place so much emphasis on the coach, but the majority of coaches have up and down years. The difference is the players.

It’s also the “shrink” part of coaching, where you have pampered 5-Stars who’ve been told for years that their feces has no aroma, and if you don’t get their buy-in you have our 2010-11 season, with a supposed stud PG and his hype-man father.

Mark Gottfried went to 5 straight tourneys, an elite 8 and had them ranked number one in the country for a stretch of time.

It's a football school but so is every non UK SEC school. If you're a good coach you'll win there. Aurburn is one of the worst power conference schools, they hire Bruce Pearl and they win.

As bad as Avery was there, in a much harder SEC than Anthony had, he won a game in tourney, won 2 games in a conference tourney and had a first round pick. All things AG couldn't do

Alabama has the second most SEC tourney titles all time behind UK. This is the same program that put out Latrell Sprewell, Robert Horry, Hollywood Robinson, Mo Williams, Derrick McKey, Antonio McDyess, Gerald Wallace,

Anthony Grant was the first coach at Alabama since Hayden Riley (1960-68) to

1. Not win two consecutive games in the SEC tourney
2. Have a first round pick
3. Win a game in the NCAA tourney
4. Make two consecutive NCAA tourneys

Go back and look at win lose #s. I never said Bama was a bad gig. I said it was hard to win at, which it is. Grant didn't have a super long leash, either did Avery. I'm sure Grant is happier at UD. Bama is a good job with a good history. Yes, you are correct they pumped our a decent amount of NBA guys from the late 1980's to early 2000s. Three of those guys you mentioned I think got drafted in the same year or two.

Mark Edwards: Best coach for Tide basketball job is sitting at Jax State

Does Alabama want to compete for national championships in men's basketball? Does Alabama want to go back to competing for a league tournament crown?

Does Alabama want to beat Bruce Pearl?

Well, there's a guy who's about a two-hour drive West who's done all that.

Ray Harper, 57, just wrapped up his third year at Jacksonville State, and he's the best coach in Alabama. Bar none. Yes, I know how good Pearl is. Harper is better.

That was the weakest in SEC years (SEC was twice behind the A10, 1 spot ahead his last year) and got the benefit of divisions his first two years there when the SEC west horrific

Don’t take my word for it

In the last three seasons, the SEC has had 11 total bids to the NCAA Tournament – one less than the non-FBS conference Atlantic 10, which has no national TV contract, has produced. The SEC is dead last among Power 5 conference schools in NCAA bids by a large margin. Auburn has not qualified for the NCAA Tournament since 2003 - that was four head coaches ago and is the longest current NCAA Tournament drought in the league. Alabama has not qualified since 2012 in the third year of the Anthony Grant era.

These posts remind me of the endless debate about BG. The camps would cherry pick data to make their points, never looking at a true whole picture. BTW, every coach has blips on their record. Maybe players and competition have something to do with it.

AG is the coach at Dayton, not Alabama or VCU. Time to look forward. I hope that AG is very successful, because he is the coach of UD. That is the way I felt about every previous coach.

I think AG can be successful. Last year was rough, but I have heard about a lot of the issues with the players who left. AGs game management seemed to improve this year and the redshirt recruits have generated a lot of excitement. I’ve attended practices and I am impressed with his coaching style in practice. As with most new coaches who change the style of the program, including Archie at UD and Indiana, year three is the telling year. Like AG or not, the results on the court will be the benchmark.

Got to know Nate Oats when he was at Romulus HS and coached Devin Searcy. He is a sharp dude and has gone from teaching HS math to HC at Alabama in 5-6 years:

We were living in AR when they hired Mike Anderson away from Missouri. Their fans and alumni were ecstatic, and thought they had a coach for life, who would take the program to the Final 4. He had a 169-102 record, 3 NCAA and 2 NIT in 8 years. They just extended him last year, and will have to buyout about $7 million. Crazy stuff.

Coaches hold too much power. They are basically free agents to leave but still expect to get paid when fired. I remember the days when a contract actually meant something.. Archie is a perfect example. Had a great contract, work/life situation and was offered a truckful of money and still left for greener pastures.

I was watching the Buffalo game with my son and they mentioned the contract extension. I told him that the contract extension meant nothing on his end and he would be gone in a week or two.

Billy Lange is local to the area. Has a pretty strong Big 5 resume in addition to being an assistant with a resurgent Sixers team that has recaptured the attention of area basketball fans. I would think that would viewed very positively by area coaches.

That should help St. Joe's and the conference.

I guess I haven't seen the alarm that you're mentioning. It hasn't been anything over the top in any of Philly online things I've read. Some people not happy about how Martelli was handled which is certainly fair and discussion of the decommits that happen with every coaching change are the only negatives I saw.

I have no idea how Lange will be. As to the mention of JOB 2.0, I certainly hope not. The conference would suffer and I have way too many friends that are alumni/fans of St. Joe's. But looking at a comparison, Lange grew up and played in Big 5 country, has ties to 2 legendary coaches in the same city, was part of the resurgent NBA team in the same city... other than that, yep... pretty much the same.

I was referencing the early chatter on St. Joe's message board. They did not approve, at least initially.

Jamie Dixon rumored to leave TCU for UCLA. That leaves Cronin at UC, for now, but will VT go after him?

Let's hope so, Mick and UC are in a rut, it is time for somebody new. Mick's offense is a problem.

And BTW, the bracket matrix had UC's seed average at 6.4 this year, they got a 7, I fail to see the supposedly big slight there.

You think Wojo might hold-out for the Duke gig once his mentor (Ratface) decides to hang it up?

They'll all be beating down the door for that one...Wojo, Dawkins, Collins, Amaker, Capel, etc., etc. It will be interesting to see which one Ratface backs.

Rumors that Mullin won't return to St Johns and Bobby Hurley (Ariz St) will get the job.

They started out the season on fire, and ended it on a really bad skid. Was fortunate enough to take-in The First Four on the night they played. Frankly, that night, I think half the A10 would have beaten them on a neutral court. Certainly not an NCAA tournament-worthy squad. Hurley’s ASU squad was clearly the better team that night.

I saw a lot of St. John's games this year and it was evident that Mullin himself is out of control on the sidelines and that he has no control over his players who are also out of control on the court. I guess that's why they say teams take on the personality of their coach.
