Seems to me that he's earning it. I don't follow the NBA very closely. Does anyone know of a TV game coming up soon?

Staphon Marbury was worth it at times. But he was the same kind of head case that always saw the grass greener somewhere else and never seemed to make his teammates better. The moodiness and the I/me approach ultimately made him a multimillionaire that no one would have. Gordon has that same feel to him. No defense, no assists, lots of shots with a bad %?? Really. I think New Orleans is going to have to eat a bundle of $$ to move him.
Best thing he has done for my money is stiff Bruce Weber and drop Illinois for Indiana.
It will be interesting to see how Roberts makes out in this deal.

If you have NBA-TV, they will carry the NOLA/Dallas game on Sunday April 14th.

New Orleans will have a lot to say about how this season ends for Dallas and LA. The Pelicans will play both the Mavs and Lakers twice each in the last 5 games. Home n' home with both clubs.
The NBA will be watching all four of those games closely.
Good chance for Brian to get some national exposure.

33 minutes, 20 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block (!), 2 steals.
Pretty good stat line although it was in a blowout loss to Sacramento.

Last game of the season - B-Rob: 42 minutes, three rebounds, six assists, thirteen points (5/17, 3/5, 1/1).
Congrats to B-Rob on a great rookie season!

Here's how BRob faired against the other rookies in the league
http://www.nba.com/statistics/player...DD=All%20Teams
15th in Pts at 7.1 ahead of Fellow Hornet Austin Rivers.
Has him tied for 12th in 3pt %, but IDK how much the guys ahead of him all shot and am too lazy to look it up.
Has him in 6th in FT % but none of them ahead of him shot near as many as BRob, nor played as many minutes. The five ahead of him all have 100%. Teammate Darius Miller is ahead of him has the most minutes of the 5 with 13, but only shot 8 FTs. Looks like our guy was the best rookie FT shooter.
7th in assists per game. Probably equal out to be 4th in Assists per 48 minutes if you take out the outliers. Perhaps, most importantly, 1st in Assist:Turnover ratio.
Congrats on a great season BRob, hopefully you carved yourself a nice little niche as at least a role player and have a successful career.

The key takeaway from Doug's piece is that BRob is on a two year deal with a club option for the 2nd season.
I would imagine the Pelicans will be picking up that option based on his performance this year.

Here is a rather interesting review of Roberts' season. It is heavily stat related and not particularly complimentary. It is obvious that his low salary makes him valuable and likely to be picked up for next year, however.

Maybe you have really high expectations. The conclusion was that Roberts was an average backup PG - and a bargain because they paid peanuts for league-average. Unless you expect him to start or compete for 6th man of the year, I think that's a fine assessment. It says he should continue to be employed, at least.

I thought the assessment was fine... he didn't do a great job shooting the ball, but I think that will come around if he's given a continued opportunity to perform.

Very fair assessment me thinks. I'll say one thing for the writer of that article, I'd hate to have that much investigative depth on my sports career, or anyone else on this MB for that matter. wow. Very perceptive, deep, and objective reporting.
Brian is what he is. Throughout the season he faced some of the best guards in the NBA. Tried hard to defend them, tried his best to score on them. Think he still will grow. The question is will the Pelicans, or any other NBA team, give him that chance? He's a great young man, but in the end, he's still working in a flawed sport with fickle management.

BRob
In the end, how many people get to say they spent a year (or two or three) playing at the highest level of any particular sport in the world!
Fair assessment of Brians' year, his strengths and weaknesses. Honestly, don't know if he'd disagree with any of it---but maybe he would!
Bottom line, I am so proud of this kid. His sticktuitiveness (is that a word), to not only make a career out of basketball but continue to do it with the class that we all admire in our athletes at UD. * at least most of them!
I've never forgotten how it felt to be in the building during the Miami game or the Pitt game of countless others----this year spent watching him play in the best basketball league in the world against the likes of LeBron, Kobe, etc. has only added some additional priceless memories to that long list!
Brian, thanks for doing such a great job of representing UD and yourself on and off the court since you left Toledo for the U of D. Have a great summer and keep working hard like we all know you are.

Glad to see him take advantage of the obscene amount of money these NBA players command. $790,000 for 9 months of basketball? Not chump change even if it is the least they can pay him. My understanding is that he is a frugal individual, so a half dozen years of service and he can start his business career with a boatload more $$ than any of us started with. With his personality, calm demeanor, introspective approach to life, I can't imagine him failing at whatever business career he is presented with. Life is setting up rather nicely for a deserving Brian Roberts.

I am looking forward to news of Brian Roberts career with the brown Pelicans - the official Louisiana state bird.

It's a decent take on things. However I don't it's necessarily reflective of the how BRob improved over the year. New team, new coach, new system, and rookie NBA jitters. That's a fine line to walk for anybody. What I saw was a guy that was constantly adjusting and working to find his place on a team that sort of wavered throughout the year. They pull in Eric Gordon (stupidly) and that guy is basically a black hole, but if your boss says feed him the ball then that's what you do. They paid a ton of money for two other rookies who were tepid at best. Not convinced either one is going to be an impact player, but if you're boss says to feed them the ball then that's what you do. After all they've shelled out millions. In the meantime you've got some proven players out there who deserve shots such as Anderson. So it's a complex place to find make your own room. He's pretty good in creating his own shot but he's best when his teammates are playing well and sharing the ball (i.e. kickouts). The main thing I think he gained was the confidence that he belonged out there. Furthermore I think he will always be the guy that goes out with a chip on his shoulder and gives maximum effort (maybe Rivers learned something from him?).

BRob really comes across as a very mature young man and a great representative for UD! I can really see him becoming a fan favorite due to his work ethic, personality and of course on court performance. Really looking forward to following his future success in the NBA.

Several thing stick out when the former Flyers get a chance to be interviewed. One is the classy person's they really are. Second is the humility with which they prepare and compete. Roberts is a poster boy for UD.

I didn't think he would play with the Hornets after April 18, 2013. However, he might in 2014-15 if MJ likes B-Rob.

I think Roberts proved that he can be a capable backup. Possibly a starter on a rebuilding team. But his lack of strength and size on defense limits him as far as a starter at the level of a playoff team. He still remains a very effective player at his salary. The Pelicans will need a cost-effective backup pg even with Holiday and Gordon on board. Unless of course they dump Gordon, who is making a ton of money and IMO is a selfish player.
But as the world turns in the NBA, Robert's salary will grow by mandate due to tenure, & one of these years a cheaper draftee will be taking his spot. That's the web the NBA has woven.

I think he would be a great fit for my Cavs - backing up K Irving. It would be great to see those two worlds collide.

Actually, i think this may be ok. Because of money issues Vasquez may be odd man out. Teams can't afford to play big money to two point guards. Brob's low cost will help him.

Yes, BUT. . .
If you're hand-wringing for BR, keep in mind that if the Miami Heat had a draft pick, they would draft either a guard, a forward, or a center. That doesn't signal anything for the immediate future of Wade, James, or Bosh.
There's always competition and someone trying to take your job in the NBA, that's the nature of the business. Every team tries to improve all the time.

You're right teams always draft to try to improve, but things are different when you are coming off the bench vs. being a superstar starter. I can bet that LBJ isn't the least bit worried when anyone is drafted at his position(whatever that is for the game and/or moment), but for B-Rob it is a little bit different because his contract is not guaranteed. If NOLA would have drafted only forwards things would be much the same, but with bringing in not one, but two guards, things look worse.

drafting a guy who plays the same position as Lebron James does not equate to drafting a guy who plays teh same position as Brian Roberts, let along acquiring an all star who plays the same position. Its not even in the same hemisphere.
What it does mean for BRob, is that New Orleans has their starting PG. There is no preteninding that last year's draft pick, Austin Rivers is going to develop into an all star PG, but I don't think many thought of BRob as a starting PG (at least not on a regular basis), so now instead of competing for a backup role at PG for a guy who's not going to merit 35+ minutes a night, he's competing for a backup role at PG for a guy who is going to command 35+ minutes a night against the Both Rivers and Vasquez whom they have more invested in.
Thankfully for BRob, I think he caught the attention of a lot of NBA types last season. If he doesn't catch on w/ New Orleans this year, there is going to be a team on the phone that can use him as their backup. Rivers has a garunteed contract, so the odds of him going down to the D league or getting cut are down right slim.

It's somewhat similar to Chris Wright's situation... he did pretty well what playing time he got with Golden State, but the next year they drafted 2 PF (Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green) - and CW doesn't get signed again.

Again, yes BUT. . .
Every team has multiple players at the same position. Players are going to get cut. I'm not sure I would immediately leap to the conclusion that BR's career is over, or the Pelican's have a predetermined outcome that he's going to be out next year.
You know, he just MIGHT have a great training camp, and someone else might be left saying "too bad the Pelicans already have BR, looks like "our guy" is the odd man out." So little faith!

Robert's is competing against every other backup point guard in the NBA. A good camp could go a long way toward some other team picking him up, especially if they are cap-strapped.

More NBA point guard dynamics
Today's announcement buried somewhere in the sports section regarding the Mav's signing a 6'4" point guard from Israel, Gal Mekel, is typical of the events that can affect BRob's chances. The Mav's signed this pick & roll-based point guard to back up whatever veteran they can lay their hands on to complement Dirk.
They also signed first-rounder Shane Larkin from UM out of the draft. Another cat-quick pick&roll player playing the point who was ACC POY. Both players are expected to back up a veteran pg yet to be acquired.
So maybe those two signees don't affect Robert's status, but the kicker is that the Mavs will cut loose Roddy Beaubois and Darren Collison. One a competent backup and the other a starter at Indiana and Dallas.
These dynamics could definitely affect Roberts if his salary continues to grow with his tenure. Shows more than ever, the NBA career is one tough year at a time.

Pelicans offer Tyreke Evans
New Orleans is loading up on guards with an offer to All-Star Tyreke Evans:
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/94...cording-report
"The Pelicans backcourt, as of now, would be somewhat crowded. They acquired All-Star guard Jrue Holiday in a draft night trade with Philadelphia last week, and point guard Greivis Vasquez and shooting guard Eric Gordon are still on the roster"

You can count Gordon out. He's a goner and a cancer to the team. And I'm not convinced Vasquez is a true pg like BRob has turned himself into. Vasquez is much more of a combo guard with his size and skills. We'll see how this plays out for BRob. If it's not in NO, I'm confident he'll land on his feet somewhere in The League.

Vasquez to the kings it looks like. Less crowded at the pg spot now. I believe brob can beat out Pierre Jackson for the backup spot.

Roberts odds increasing each day
Two more veteran point guards are off the market since the Mavs signed Jose' Calderon (Toronto) and Devin Harris (Atlanta).
Calderon signed for 29M for 4 years and Harris 9M for 3 years.
Calderon is an interesting study. He is a 90% freethrow shooter, 50% 3pt shooter, and often leads the league in A/TO ratio. But he is a defensive liability.
Harris is just the opposite. Not good shooter, but a quick and effective defender.
Seems to me that Roberts is a "Calderon" in training. Brian's shooting dropped off some last year, and he needs to fix that, but it shows that outstanding pg shooters that protect the ball and feed their teammates can carve out a nice living in the NBA.

Hmmmm.
Pelican's sign ANOTHER guard. Anthony Morrow is probably insurance for an unplanned Eric Gordon departure (restricted free agent), nevertheless they are set to have some serious competition for the guard spots this coming NBA camp.

Brian is kind of stuck in NOLA but the scout who was his champion with the Hornets has left for another team. IF Brian cannot make the Pelicans, expect him to be a Nugget. (At least that's what I kind of get from his brother in law).

Man, I don't care who in the NBA he plays for......as long as he sticks. So much actual fun looking for his name in the box score and watching a UD kid play in NBA games!
Hope your right nardo....

I like the sound of this! The Nuggets did hire Tim Connelly from the Pelicans to be their new GM and rumors are swirling they are looking to trade Andre Miller, which would open up a spot for a backup PG behind Ty Lawson. If so, he needs to work on his alley-oop skills with the likes of Kenneth Faried and JaVale McGee on the team. I'd welcome BRob with open arms to Denver!

And weren't the Nuggets the team against whom he had his big assist game? Something like 18 assists?

ESPN.com's Las Vegas Summer League western conference preview: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/pos...west-preview-2
Chuckle-inducing paragraph for me:
Austin Rivers: How do you recover from one of the worst rookie seasons ever? Baby steps. Rivers may feel like he’s competing with Tyreke Evans, Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday for playing time in New Orleans, but he’d better be focused on outplaying fellow summer league invite Brian Roberts first.

Looks like B-Rob started and scored the 2nd points for the Pelicans.
http://www.nba.com/games/20130712/NY...fo.html?ls=slt
He ended with 10 pts., 5 rebounds, and a team leading 2 steals. Also note he was 2nd in minutes only to the "star" Austin Rivers. They play the Bucks next on Sunday at 530.

Shot the three well but 0-9 from 2pt range. No turnovers in 30+ min and the usual 4-4 from FT line. Should hear news tonight, right? Either waived or guaranteed his salary.

I have been wondering the same thing, supposedly if the didn't waive him by last Saturday they had to keep him for next season so my guess is he will play next year with the hornets.

Option picked up because past the deadline to waive him. Should be interesting to see if he makes active roster or not - or gets traded

Haven't really been paying close attention to this thread, but I remember seeing him play against the Cavaliers last year and going toe-to-toe with Kyrie Irving for most of the game. It would be really nice for him to be able to have a shot to establish himself in the league. A really good guy that deserves to be successful.
His Hollinger PER of 14.6 is pretty darn good for first-year player who went undrafted.

I only saw him for a few seconds. He walked into Doubleday's and asked how long the wait was and then walked back out. Almost caused a riot among a couple of the young waitresses who wanted the hostess to sit him at one of their tables if he came back in.

Here's a funny one
Evans is perfectly fine coming off the bench. lol.
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_r...ans?xid=si_nba
There's a GM nightmare. $44M for a backup guard. Not going to happen.
Let's start a rumor that Roberts is starting.

Neither Evans or Roberts will be starting at point. Evans will most likely be the backup while Jrue Holiday starts at point and Eric Gordon starts at the 2. Evans will be the first off the bench because he can play 1 or 2 while Roberts will be the third point or he could see limited action as an off ball spot up shooter.

Also paying big money for a super sixth man is not unheard of. Just look at Jason Terry when he played with Dallas, J.R. Smith with the Knicks or Jamal Crawford with the Hawks, Portland, and the Clippers.

flawed logic with this franchise
Until they can somehow, someway, unload cancerous Eric Gordon. This was a bankrupt franchise in the not to distant past. It's not like the Pelicans are playoff material. Contenders do those kinds of things. Not the Pelicans, Kings, Orlando's of the NBA world.

Others Worth Mentioning
Quincy Acy (Raptors), Aron Baynes (Spurs), Archie Goodwin (Suns), Draymond Green (Warriors), Lucas Nogueira (Hawks), Austin Rivers (Pelicans), Brian Roberts (Pelicans), Thomas Robinson (Blazers), Mike Scott (Hawks), Jeff Taylor (Bobcats), Marquis Teague (Bulls), Malcolm Thomas (Bulls), Tyler Zeller (Cavaliers).
The above is from SI's "The Point Forward" about the NBA Summer League.

I think Greg Oden could be a huge steal considering you can get him cheap and if he's healthy you get a really good center possibly all star level center, people forget that he was regarded as the next superstar in the NBA when he was drafted and in the time he played he actually lived up to that potential.

I would expect whichever franchise wins the Oden derby, the contract will be heavily incentivized and full of injury caveats. The team that gets him might be the one that does not need him for more than 15 minutes a game, and also offers the most guaranteed money. If Oden continues to be as fragile as he has been the last 6 years, this might be his only shot at a sizeable contract with decent guarantees. The Ralph Sampson saga comes to mind.

Roberts would have challenged Chapman's scoring mark if he could have run off picks for 4 years shooting Js. Ball would have been in his hands less, but he would have been open far more.

Anderson sees open shots for he and Roberts
Scoring forward Ryan Anderson sees open shots ahead for himself and Brian Roberts. With players they now have that can reach the rim, the whole offensive dynamics have changed:
"The ability that we have to attack the rim now, with our scoring, is huge,” Anderson said at USA Basketball’s minicamp. “We have so many different creative lineups we can work with, with guys who can all really score the ball.......... It won’t be a situation of having guys sticking on me, rather than helping off of Tyreke’s man or Jrue’s man. When we have guys that are aggressive like we do now, it causes (defenses to help). It causes players like me, Brian Roberts --GUYS WHO CAN REALLY SHOOT THE BALL – to be open. I’m definitely excited."

Was it a Freudian omission that he didn't mention Eric Gordon?

It's been a few weeks since anything of note has come out of the Pelicans camp. But in the last few days the Pelicans have beefed up their pre-season roster:

The really good news for Robert's is that none of these guys are guards---for a change.
Holiday is the starting point guard, with Roberts and rookie Pierre Jackson from Baylor the backups---so far. Maybe Rivers could fill in, but it's really not in his DNA to be a pg.

Pierre Jackson will be playing in France this season. I think it is safe to say BRob will be the backup PG again this season in NO.

Of course other teams will be making cuts and some of those will be veteran point guards. That's where we may have a bit of intrigue. Once again Roberts gets a break because with his stats vs salary as he is still a bargain.

Veteran point guards, which would have guaranteed contacts at this point, likely won't be the ones cut. Robert's contract became guaranteed as well back in July.

I don't think all the contracts I'm talking about are guaranteed, if in fact they have a contract. I'm talking about Mike James, Delonte West, Gal Mekel, Roddy Beaubois, Devin Harris, et al. Making the vet minimum IF they make the final roster.
The Mavs alone have 7 point guards on their roster right now. Certainly not the threat to Roberts as might have been a year ago, but still a threat clear through the final cuts and churning that can take place in an NBA camp.

Guys like James, West, & Beaubois are free agents right now, and were in July when Roberts contract became guaranteed, so the Pelicans could sign them right now if they wanted. If there is no interest in them now, I have my doubts they are going to be interested in them after they fail to make another NBA team. Mekel and Harris are guys that have guaranteed contracts. When Roberts became guaranteed, for all intents and purposes he became a lock for a roster spot.

Pelicans have new practice digs, and the whole team appears to be buying into their future:
“There was a lot of eagerness to get over here,” guard Brian Roberts said. “We can see that it’s going to be a great facility and something we’re going to enjoy as a team. I think it’s going to help us get better.”

Officially signed for next season
"Backup point guard Brian Roberts said the Pelicans have picked up the option year on his contract for this upcoming season that will increase his salary to $788,872 from last season’s $473,604. He is currently participating in the team's volunteer workouts"

Now I'm confused. Robert's was guaranteed before. Or was he?
