Games of note:
The past few seasons I've started a thread along these lines, and its seemingly been a good place to hold all the conversation about other games of interest to UDPride. Could be opponents we've played or will play later, fellow A-10 schools, perhaps at some point teams we're fighting for a bubble spot with (or even better fighting for a higher seed), etc...
As I've said in the past, there is always someone who says "I don't care about other teams, as long as the Flyers win things will take care of themselves". For starters, you are correct, should UD go undefeated this season, they'll findthemselves singing "one shinning moment" however I assume they'll need some help along the way if they hope to make the tournament, so take your belly aching to another thread
Hopefully we can get several people updating this thing daily so we can have a better idea of whom to keep an eye on outside of the men in Red & Blue.
Go Flyers!

for starters:
Last night: Gonzaga took apart Colorado State (who replaced all 5 starters)
ooyeepuyyeeeffdoubleyouiieee knocked off some school from Kokoma (In)
So far today, lasalle hit their free throws late to seal a win over Quinipiac 73-65 (I think)
UMass is currently up on LSU 12-10.
For poops and laughes, in games that don't have a direct impact on UD (at least not at this juncture but perhaps will be good/bad for UD later on in the season) Temple lost at home to Kent State. I'm glad that is some other conferences "bad loss" (though I know nothing about the quality of Kent State this season to know if its truely a bad loss or not)

other games of note later today:
GW takes on Maine at home.
Just for fun
#1 Kentucky takes on #2 Mich State
#4 Duke takes on #5 Kansas
Both of those games at at the United Center in Chicago; should be good ones for the national perspective at the top of the basketball world.

Larry Brown and SMU beat Rhode Island by 31 yesterday at SMU, 89-58.
Rhode Island beat SMU at Rhode Island last year 72-50.
SMU is playing its games off-campus until $47 million in renovations are completed to its campus arena. SMU's first game back on campus will be January 4, 2014 vs. Connecticut.
Also from an AP article:
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/moores-...85--ncaab.html
Before Monday night's game, SMU confirmed that 6-7 guard Jalen Jones, who led SMU last season as a sophomore in scoring and rebounding, has been granted his release and won't play for the Mustangs this season. Jones started all 32 games last season, averaging 32.4 minutes, 14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds. After Jones wasn't with the team during SMU's season opener last Friday, Brown said Jones was looking for guarantees to start, play 35 minutes a game and to play small forward.
I'm glad to see that Jones wasn't rewarded for demanding things from Brown, I'm glad to see that Brown stood up to him.

UMass escaped at Home after coughing the ball up on three straight possessions down the stretch. Luckily for them, LSU missed two wide open threes and the Minutemen were able to convert their foul shots at the end. Not a pretty finish for them, but they prevailed.

I watched most of the West V game and our former point guard. He is still very fast, short, only average on defense and a very poor shot. He and Eron Harris were 7-29 combined.
I will take our guy(s) over him.

I agree but can I take Caris Levert? Dude was 6 out of 7 for three for Michigan, en route to an effortless 24 points in a win over South Carolina State. He would have looked real good in a Dayton uni...

Starting to think that LaSalle's run last year was a fluke, as they have lost to Manhattan and squeaked past Quinnipiac.
Also W. Virginia is in for a long season again, as they lose to Va. Tech who had just themselves lost at home to USC-Upstate from Spartanburg, SC.
Just a fun note: Longwood beat TCU 82-79 in Fort Worth last night. That is just Longwood's 16th road win EVER as a Div. I basketball school in 8+ seasons of play.

So I suscribe to a basketball newsletter, first one of the season was delivered to my inbox this morning. Some games of note that I thought might be interesting that I learned:
coppin State won at Oregon State; they are now 2-89 vs "power conference" teams (I'm not sure what they define a power conference team as, but you get the gist)
5,720 fans show up to watch Steve Alford's coaching debut at UCLA.
Seton hall & Niagra combined for 102 free throws in their game.

Nov. 13th:
Wednesday's are typically a busy day in college hoops, with yesterday's flury of activity, today isn't a typical wednesday.
StFrancis (Pa) is at Dayton, but we all knew that.
Elsewhere:
St Louis is at SIUE (I believe that's southern Illinois U at Edswardville?)
That's about it. I'm sure I'm missing an OOC opponent in there somewhere, but overall a rather boring evening of college hoops; lets hope the Flyers make it a boring evening as well by drilling St Francis before moving on to St Francis.

I was at JPJ for the game last night. Big win for VCU, but they were only really in it because UVA missed an insane amount of free throws. The VCU fans that came up were reaally loud. Great win for the A10!

Another kid we should have and could have got was Nick Kellogg of Ohio U. Instead we took the two dud studs, Juwan and whats his name. Nick had 21 last night against Ohio State. With a great bloodline and parenting he was bound to turn out good.
Ohio U gave OSU a run for their money despite having 5 kids foul out. No one fouled out for OSU. The foul shots were 51 to 21 in State's favor. Ohio U had 6 more field goals than OSU, and lost by 10 pts. Smells like a homer job, feels like a homer job, tastes like a homer job...

OU was outsized and outquicked at every position and because of that they spent most of the night literally playing catch-up, which is why they fouled so often. I can see why you might think it was a homer job, but I watched the game and thought it was called fair...and as many of you know, I pay attention to officiating.
I agree about losing out on the Kellogg kid...and their point guard who is fun. OU will have a good season. I like their coach and how he kept his cool, especially in the first half when OSU had shut them out for the first 5 minutes. Barring injuries, OU will easily make the NCAA's.

Can't speak to the parenting side of things, but following bloodlines isn't neccessarily a sure thing.
How did Jordan's kids turn out as basketball players?
Ted Williams' son as a baseball player?
Having strong bloodlines, and good parenting certainly helps, but you have to look at the kids game beyond just their name and what their parents did before them.

Agree on the blood line stuff... I belive there is an older brother to the one at OU now, who started at Providence and xferred to OU, where he quit playing basketball..... IIRC, one of them was an awesome soccer player in HS (DeSales in Columbus). Not sure which one. And an older sister that played VB at Kentucky ... I think.....

I think I would take the kid we got instead of Levert. I think he is french because his last name is Pierre? He seems like he could impact some games at UD.

I wouldn't choose Levert over Pierre but I would love to have them both. Pierre committed days after Levert chose Michigan, but Pierre didn't claim the last scholarship. There was one more that could have been given. Not that it matters, but I've seen several people make the same point and I think a lot of people don't remember that we didn't max out the scholarships on that class.

From a numbers standpoint that's true. From a practical standpoint I don't think both ever commit to UD. If Levert had committed to UD, Pierre ends up at SBU.

I agree, but I don't think Pierre commits if Levert does. They play the same position and have a similar style. Also, it was well known that year unless an absolute stud fell into our laps we were going to bank that last scholarship to balance out that classes. So in a sense Pierre did take the last scholarship that season.

Well, Pierre has turned into an absolute stud so he would have been worth the banked scholarship. I feel like Levert is more of a guard and Pierre is more of a small forward - some similarities yes. But mainly similar in that they're both really good. And in the fantasy land of my mind, we could have had them both if Michigan didn't ruin it all!

Games for tonight
GTech is at Georgia
Murray St at Old Dominion
North Carolina A&T at Rhode Island
IPFW at aTm - Corpus Christi
Northern Arizona @ USC
Saturday:
Siena @ LaSalle
Texas Pan-Am @ IPFW (w/ a game the night before in Texas, that must be some sort of "get together in texas, I doubt this is actually at IPFW, don't know where its being held)
Northern Iowa @ George Mason
St Francis, PA @ Bucknell
Minnesota @ Richmond (go A-10)
Canisus @ St Bonnies
Ol Miss @ Coastal Carolina
GW @ Manhattan (how bout an A-10 sweep of the boroughs?)
Creighton @ Saint Joes
Winthrop @ VCU
SLU @ Southern Illinois
Sunday:
Youngstown St @ UMass
IPFW vs Tennessee Tech
Duquesne @ WVU
Oakland @ Gonzaga
Illinois State (I think we play them) @ Northwestern
I'm sure I missed a game or two, nothing really approaching a "national showcase" game as college basketball gives way to college football and the NFL this weekend.

I make all of our non-con opponents "my teams" on ESPN. That way every time I look at scores and click "ALL," any non conference opponent playing that day comes to the top and is highlighted in yellow.

Anyone notice that the same St. Francis team that played us to a tie thru 36 minutes lost to Fordham (Fordham!) 87-67 last week. Fordham doesn't win many games, and rarely by 20 points. St. F plays at Mason this Tuesday, which may prove insightful....or alarming.

This was noted in posts at least a half dozen times before, during and after the game. Comparing scores will drive you nuts. That would make Tampa Bucs better then the Patriots.

Mich St pulls it out 62-53, as Columbia must have looked at the scoreboard and did not make a shot in the last 5 minutes. Payne with 26 and 11 and 3 blocks. Despite his doubters, he has turned out to be a darn good player. What could have been!

Columbia imploded with about 2 minuts to go..... 2 shot clock violations and a missed front end of a 1 and 1, took a 3 point game to double digits.... Mich St was in a funk ... no doubt about it. Not that I am trying to compare us to Mich St, but there is not doubt the Flyers are in a funk... If all we got is what we showed in the first 2 games, we are in big trouble.
GO FLYERS!

Yes, I know it is Fordham, but I saw Fordham play once last year, and I thought they looked like they were improving. I think Coach Pecora has them on the right track.

I love it. Roy is a dud. His handling of his players and the legal problems and NCAA violations are killing NC. What a contrast to their neighbor, Duke, who plays by the rules and graduates players.

Seems like every season, I see an early season OOC "buy" opponent at UD arena that becomes my lower conference team to follow as someone that looks better than your traditional "buy" game opponent. Some years I'm right, some years I'm wrong, afterall 1 single game is no way to judge any team, and w/ these teams, other than results, I usually don't see any more games on TV, let along keep up with injuries that could affect things.
anyhoo, IPFW has become that team for me. While the Flyers should have won by double digits, and the ending was certainly exciting, despite the end result, IPFW certainly looked like a team that was significantly better than the 6th (out of 8) place finish they were projected for whatever craptastic conference they were in. Seemed to have good size, took care of the ball, good shooters, etc... Now, I'm not going to say its going to be a 'quality' win in the eyes of the NCAA committee, I doubt they finish in the top 100, but I could see a top 150 finish. One of those wins that go un-noticed (other than the miracle ending) but get enough of them and you get a significant boost to the RPI than you'd expect otherwise. As noted above, they lost by 1 point again on Friday, but bounced back with wins saturday and sunday. Granted the oppoenents weren't exactly a who's who of college bball, but a good sign for a team that might fight it out to win their conference.
Moving on to monday's game:
SFNY is at Syracuse.
Metro State (???) is at Rhody
A decent number of games for a monday overall, but most are your low level schools or Buy Games for large conference teams at home. Not much that should affect UD; whould love to see SFNY play Syracuse tough as a gauge for UD, but I doubt they keep it w/n 20 at the carrier dome.

RI scheduled Metro State? Why? For those that don't know, Metro State is a commuter school located in Downtown Denver, Colorado, a Division II school. They are a very good Division II school, who has won a few national championships under the guidance of Mike Dunlap, who was the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats last year and was an assistant at St. Johns under Steve Lavin and at Arizona. While Metro St. is usually one of the premier Div. II basketball programs in the country, I have no earthly idea why RI would put them on the schedule. Especially with now well over 300 Div. I men's basketball programs to choose from. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

The game is part of the NIT season tip-off tournament. Rhode Island faces Metro State in the first round and likely faces Arizona if they win.

St. francis really giving Syracuse a game, 30-26 at half. People who belittled our 20 point victory over St Francis don't know how tough they are as a team and how well we really played. Remember, they won at Miami.

Not sure why a Div. II school would be placed in the pre-season NIT. RI got hosed as Metro St. is a quality D-2 program. RI down 10 at half.

StFU's defense is for real. Cuse struggled to get outside shots. Kudos to our Flyers who wooped up on them from an offensive standpoint.

I'm dying to know what the St. Francis win means to us 3 games into the season...so please elaborate. In Rollo's world, your supposed to win meaningless buy-games, not rely on them to prove anything.

Maybe, just maybe, st f ny is showing that they are a notch or two above your average buy game opponent. Beating decent teams at any point n the season is always a good thing, no matter where the game is played.

While I agree that three games is too small a sample size, there were PLENTY of folks on here who say/said UD is doomed for the season after barely beating IPFW and StFPa. Can't argue both ways. Either the sample size is too small (which I believe it is) or UD's win on Saturday is a little more impressive than what some folks are saying. Can't have it both ways based on whatever way better supports your argument!!
Again, let's wait 10-15 games and see how the boys are doing.

StFU was not a buy game, they are part of the Maui Invitational. I am impressed with how well they are doing. They have some game. Wish our Flyers would over achieve and surprise us. Part of that is taking the wins, however they come.
URI squeaks it out, perhaps that will give them some poise to play a good game at Zona.

So now whomping a team that beat Miami on the road and took Cuse down to the wire isn't impressive?

The real season starts tomorrow...let's continue this riveting discussion on Thursday. Assuming Archie is reading my mind and/or emails, we're in pretty good shape for an upset!

I was just kidding upthread. I agree with your above post, in general, you are supposed to win all your buy games without too much trouble.
Although it is possible that SFNY is a lot better than the average buy game opponent, dnutz is right, the sample size right now is too small to tell, and it is most likely that SFNY will perform close to what the projection sites are predicting.

rpiforecast: 14-15(8-8) http://www.rpiforecast.com/teams/St....ncis%20NY.html
expected end of season rpi: 202
teamrankings: 18-8(10-6) http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-bas...rs/projections
So, some posters are most likely getting too excited thinking that SFNY is a really good club.
FWIW, Miami of Florida is projected to really struggle this year by 2 sites, but realtimerpi has Miami going 20-9, so there is some disagreement regarding realtimerpi's prediction compared to the other 2 sites.

There is no way you can predict anything meaningful out of 3 games into the regular season. After Thanksgiving, into early December, maybe you can start getting a decent picture of how things stand.

Yes, Bif, I do...because we know little to nothing about St. F-NY other than that they beat Miami (who lost 6 of their top 7 players from last season are a preseason #13 in the ACC) and played a tight game with Syracuse (whose next 2 games are against Minnesota and Indiana and maybe, just maybe, overlooked them).
I sure hope that the St. F-NY win is not the defining game for our NCAA at-large bid...because if it is, we're in trouble.

Has anyone said STF (NY) is a "defining" game for UD's NCAA at-large bid????? Most people are pretty rational saying that in their 4 opportunities this season, they've looked better than the typical "buy" game opponent other than the 1 game at UD. No matter what happens in Atlanta tomorrow night, or out on the islands next week, that is a good thing for UD. It certainly isn't the only thing, and naturally the conversation shifts on thursday morning because we all have 1 more data point for what UD basketball is this season. The more data points we are given, the less significance any single data point has on the whole picture.

With our non-conference schedule, it's safe to say that Georgia Tech and Gonzaga are alot more than 1 data point...to believe that puts these two teams on equal status as IPFW and the St. F's.
GTech could be a defining win...none of our first 3 games could remotely be called such...and the Gonzaga game will be the deal-maker or -breaker for national attention.

It will not be a defining moment if we lose against GT. This is a road game and Gregory will have his team very motivated for this game. Additionally, it may be a tough matchup with the size and skill of their big guys.

Not all data points are created equal. In the a good chunk of the retail world, revenue generated in Novemember and Decemember is often more telling than revenue generated in April. In the basketball world, not all games are equal either, a win over IPFW is not the same value as a win over Gonzaga, but a loss to IPFW might have done as much damage as the good will generated by a win over Gonzaga.
Gtech was 16-15 last season. I have no idea what this season holds for them, at the end, a win over STF (NY) may be worth more than a win over GTech. Lord knows there have been times a win over a MAC "buy game" opponent has been more valuable than a win over SMU who we played home & away. I wouldn't put all that much more weight in Wednesday's outcome than I would in last saturday's outcome at this point. We'll know a heck of a lot more when we're opening Santa's presents in another month.

Barely 12 hours ago you and TA111 were inferring that St. F's close loss at Syracuse proved that our win against them 'meant something'

If St. F-NY's close loss at Syracuse somehow means something to us (and it must have or there would have been no attention paid to last night's game) then wouldn't a close loss by UD at GT also 'mean something'? TA111...yes or no??
And what happens if St. F-Pa beats St. F-NY? I mean, besides armageddon...

I notice how you also left out St. F-NY's win at Miami as well. What this means is that we beat the crap out of a pretty darn good team. I know it's tough for you to admit you were wrong about St. F-NY, but I think you'd be wise to do so. As for the GT game, I don't have a crystal ball and don't know how the game will end up, but if we play like we did against St. F-NY we will be in pretty good shape.

In an attempt to get past what past wins mean exactly to the near term future of the flyers this year, there are some games to pay attention to tonight:
Delaware St @ GW
StF (Pa) @ George Mason
LaSalle @ Penn State (-3)
Hofstra @ Richmond (-17)
St Bonnie @ Siena (+6.5)
Just for Fun: New Orleans @ LSU (though I have no idea if Darenbecker was granted a waiver to play this season or if he has to sit it out; he didn't play in NO's first game)
Iona @ Kansas (-16.5)
Bethel @ Murray St
Cal St Fullerton @ USC (-6)
Rhode Island @ Arizona (-22.5)

A bit off the topic, but I saw our old friend Aric Murray playing for Texas Southern (now coached by Mike Davis - that replaced Bobby Knight at IU) against Texas Tech (now coached by Tubby Smith from KY). How is Murray able to play for a third team ( LaSalle, WVA, and now Texas Southern) without sitting out another year????

I believe he was granted a waiver since he was released or kicked out of school vs transferring on his own accord. I caught the game coming out of half time, I'll be you'll never guess who they showed Mike Davis giving an ear full to? Just can't change a tiger's stripes no matter how hard you try. Kid has NBA potential, but a CYO league head.

Good for GW (and SLU and UMass). I hope they live up to being noticed by at least a few voters and continue to build. Gotta say I am surprised by GW getting a vote, I can't hardly remember the last time they showed up and did something other than dragging down the conference RPI and of course managing to crush our NCAA chances when we choked.
URI seems to think it is two for one night with Arizona. Unfortunately they are giving the 2 and only taking one.

As I recall, GW last got a mention when Shawnta Rogers (sp?) that little point guard was running things.
