Not a terrible day for the A10 today. 6-2, but 3 of the wins were games that shouldn't have even been competitive.
Dayton over Del St
Fordham over Furman
GW over Rutgers
Richmond over William & Mary
Duquesne over UMBC
La Salle over Hartford
SJU loses to Temple
Mason loses to South Florida
Elsewhere,
Iona beats Marist
SFPA loses to Lehigh
Ill St beats Chicago State

A10 goes 6-2 last night, SJU losses to Temple late in a close game where Temple's largest margin (8 I believe) didn't come until like 15 seconds left in the game.
George Mason blows a 17 point lead w/ 12 to go, giving up an 18-0 run to USF to take the home loss.
Everything else covered above, just thought I'd throw in a couple of details for the A10s two losses to provide a little "color".
On the top 25 front, UNCs win at Michigan St is probably enough to get them back into the rankings (assumign they take care of business this weekend). They obviously have the talent and coaching, but they're so hit or miss early in the season.
Davidson beat Charlotte. Good for our future A10 partner over our old A10 partner, plus UNCC was getting some poll love in the ORV catagory.
#8 Wisconsin won @ Virgininia in a real barn burner, 48-38 UVA was getting some poll love, #27 IIRC in the AP, so that is good for UD
Murray St won by 2 over the Aces of Evansville

My concern with the UNC win over no. 1 Michigan State is the potential to knock us out of the top 25. No. 25 is a precarious perch. Even if you win, you can lose it to someone near you with a bigger win.
Would like to see Baylor win Fri.

Watched a litlle of the WVU/Mizzou game. Staten had a few good drives to the hoop; the rest of the WVU squad looked like dogmeat and the crowd in Columbia was "unattentive" to put it kindly.

Baylor offensive rebound and putback with 1 minute remaining (sound familiar?). Now up 4, 40 secs remaining.

Baylor wins, 67-62. Held Kentucky to 1 FG in last 8 mins. Comments near end of broadcast: "Baylor's only loss was to Syracuse, after beating Dayton by 1 in Maui--that's a good Dayton team."

Did anyone else watch the Baylor/Ky game and think that color analyst was way over the top with his KY comments. Every Ky player is all world, etc. This was while Baylor was up about 8 points and he barely mentions a Baylor player. My favorite was when one of the super frosh got a rebound, and instead of an outlet pass, pushed it down the court. He commented, "Now you will see how he can handle the ball in the open court." He immediately lost control and turned it over.
My point here is not to put down KY, who by the way has a long way to go on defense. But why do the announcers have to prolong the myth that a few schools play on a different plane than anyone else.

UMass beating BYU by 11 at halftime.
Fordham is not representing the A10 very well right now. Sure loss against St John's.
Richmond playing Wake Forest close so far. Down 1.
St Bonaventure losing to (dun dun DUNNNN) Buffalo. Down 2.
Temple loses a close one to Texas... and that's now irrelevant to us. Hooray.

I was interested to read this tweet from Jon Rothstein of CBS last night after Baylor's win:
Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein 12h
One thing I was thinking watching Baylor tonight. How good must Dayton be to nearly best these guys in Maui?
Have to win tonight!

LaSalle won earlier over a pretty solid Stoney Brook Squad
How bad was Fordham today? They scored 58 and still fell 12 points shy of getting doubled up by Saint Johns (for those that don't want to do the math, SJU scored 104)
UMass is up 11 w/ about 5:30 to at home vs BYU (good offensively, not so much defensively from the bit I've seen them play, pretty solid overall will be a good win if they can hang on)
GTech up 25 over E Tenn St w/ about 15 to go in the 2nd half.
Richmond up 4 w/ 11:00 to go at Wake Forest
Bonnies up 5 @ Buffalo w/ 16:43 to go in the 2nd half
Wisconsin up 8 early in the 2nd half over Marquette (ORV), Considering the final score of many Wisconsin game, that must feel like a 16-20 point lead.
St Fran (NY) down 17-12 to Army (obviously early, unless they were playing Wisconsin as noted above, then its not always so obvious when that score would be reached)
Later
SF(Pa) @ Cornell (0-9, would be nice to see the SF(Pa) get a win)
Lipscomb @ Murray St
Coppin St @ Delaware St
Cincy @ New Mexico (both in the ORV catagory)
Nova @ Saint Joes (+5)
Dartmouth @ IPFW (-6)
UNC-Greensboro @ UNC-Chapel Hill (ORV, but likely to jump us w/ the win @ MSU)
North Florida @ Indiana (#26, but lost earlier this week in the B10-ACC matchup)
Saint Louis @ Valpo (+4.5)
Drake @ #23 Iowa (+10, that line can't be correct, can it?)
New Mexico St @ #19 Gonzaga (-13)

Interesting game in the BB&T Classic. GW almost lost the game after having a 14 point lead evaporate in the final seven minutes.
Still, The Colonials will be tough. They have two big men who would give any team trouble on both ends of the court. Also, Maryland's premier player, Dez Wells, fouled out with about two minutes to play. Of course, he objected strenuously flashing that incredulous smile Coach Throw-It-In-His-Face teaches to all his players, but to no avail.
Some things never change.

Fordham sneaks past Colgate on the road. Knock on wood, lots of wood, perhaps rollo's bicep, but the Rams could show up to the conference with a sub 100 RPI. What a treat that would be. Still several weeks to go and plenty of chances to fold, but that was not a game they were supposed to win.

Ah, to think both Juwan Staten and Huggy Bear went down together...breaks the heart doesn't? No, not so much!
And nice to win for the Zags, and helps the Flyers, because we need it.

I've only seen Staten play twice this year. Both times, I have been suprised at how Huggy allows him to take some very ill-advised shots, namely 3pt shots. His biggest weakness was that he never understood what his shooting limitations were.

Evansville coughed one up to X last night. They got a 90% FT shooter to the line tied at 58 with under 2 minutes left. He bricked them both, X comes down and scores, and ends up winning by 3.

Yes, Evansville wilted in the 2nd half. Many, many times I've seen opposing teams wilt in the 2nd half vs. Xavier at the Cintas Center. You've got to be really tough to get a win at the Cintas Center.
In the second half, Xavier turned up the intensity, and Evansville wilted at both ends of the floor. Xavier successfully used both a full court press and a zone defense to climb back into the game and regain the lead.
And IMO, Bowling Green also wilted in the closing minutes of their OT loss vs. X.
IMO, struggling to beat BG and Evansville does not bode well for X, unless these rpi projections are completely meaningless right now.
BG is projected to finish at #178, and Evansville is projected to finish at #154.
Could be another year with no NCAA tournament for Xavier. That would be two years in a row of no NCAA tournament, that's unprecedented for Xavier from the Matta era going forward.
Last night, outside of Christon, Myles Davis hitting 3's, and Stainbrook inside, they struggled offensively, although I see that Dee Davis had 10 points, that seemed like a quiet 10 points for him, I don't remember him having a good night offensively. X's defense was also better in the 2nd half.

Wasn't Eron Harris recruited pretty heavily by Archie at one point? He looked pretty good shooting the ball for WVU last night. Staten has improved his shot (he's up to 69% from the charity stripe and hit a couple of mid range 2s) however I saw nothing last night that showed he's a better a distributer of the ball. I think I only saw two passes that could have lead to potential buckets, one was a long outlet pass off a Gonzaga miss where the ball got tipped out of bounds by Gonzaga. The other was where Staten cut across the lane and passed to a 3 point shooter who air balled the 3 late in the game.

WVU is 6-4 now and is projecting to have a rpi of 59, so maybe WVU misses the tournament again this year, that would be 2 years in a row for Huggins missing the NCAA tournament. Huggins hasn't missed the NCAA tournament for two years in a row since his first 2 seasons at UC back in the late 1980's.

yeah, Archie was on Harris pretty hard. He was an under the radar recruit from Indianapolis and I think Huggins swooped in at the end of summer and got him
He would be all conference caliber in the a10. he's a heck of a player

VCU falls by double digits to Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls.
Let me repeat my sentiment expressed in the ISU thread a few days ago: You have to be absolutely insane to schedule a decent MVC team on their home court.

Northern Iowa 77 VCU 68
Another tough loss for VCU and the A-10 as the pre-season conference Flagship team loses on the road to another Missouri Valley team. Archie's bro stays #1 with a 72-70 win at Michigan. Hail to the Victors! And his Brother!

I'm bummed about Evansville's collapse in the 2nd half. I was really hoping to see X go down, lol.
I still chuckle remembering an article about a pre-season meeting with Archie, Mick Cronin, Chris Mack and the N. KY coach. Mack said something to the effect that he wouldn't miss the booing he gets at UD Arena. Cronin said, "You shouldn't have thrown the ball into that guy's face." Even the enemy remembers that episode, lol.

Hate to say it, but I've thought that VCU has been a bit overrated ever since their magical First Four to Final Four run a few years back. Their biggest wins during the 2011-12 season were probably Drexel and then Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Their conference schedule was relatively weak, and they lost to Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Georgia State, Drexel, and George Mason.
In the 2012-13 season, their best wins were probably Memphis and Butler. They beat a seriously depleted and shorthanded Akron team in the first round of the NCAA tournament and then got absolutely manhandled and owned by Michigan in the second round. Granted, Michigan was awesome last season, but I watched this game, and it was a total destruction. VCU was totally overmatched in every regard even though this was a 4 seed vs. 5 seed game. Beilein took Shaka to school that day.

VCU lacks shooting from the perimeter. They last couple of seasons they used three good perimeter shooters to space the floor to open up the interior for Reddic and Graham. Now the instead stuff isn't as easy and they are missing a lot from the outside

Yes, VCU is having its problems. But they have a ton of talent both on the team and on the way in with next year's recruits. And I am sure Shaka will just keep piling up 4-star recruits in the next few years....if he is there.
What they need is a new athletic director. One that won't schedule an MVC team on the road out of conference. And one that can get a good short list for coach together, too.

I am watching Marquette slaughter Indiana something-something-something right now in front of, maybe 3500 fans. Of course, it is snowing in Milwaukee, so everyone is out making snow men. It looks really lame on Fox1.
Also, 3-6 St Peter's visited and beat Seton Hall on their home floor.

Seton Hall has been hit VERY hard by the injury bug this year. Today they lost two more. Sterling Gibbs is, in all likelihood, lost for the season now with the knee injury suffered today. They have lost 3 starters this season. Willard is supposed to have a very good recruiting class coming in next year, if he survives this season. I watched the game on the tube. You have to feel for the Hall. I spoke to my brother, who as a Hall grad and season ticket holder, attended the game in Newark. He told me the Hall fans are very down after all the injuries that derailed their season last year and it seems to be doing the same this year. The last time St. Peter's beat the Hall was in 1995. They play every year.

Perfect day for Flyer opponents - St Francis NY, Cal, IPFW, Zags all win. RPI up to 25.

Tomorrow -
Delaware State (2-7) vs Howard (2-11) at Barclays in Big Apple Classic -- A DSU win would be big RPI points

Delaware State sadly lost in overtime to Howard, 64-62. They missed a three which could have won it with 5 seconds left. Would have actually helped the RPI. Oh well.

Southern Cal did us a favor last night by coming back late and beating Cal State-Bakersfield by 4. They were down by 6 with about 5 minutes to play before coming back to win.
CSUB is not a good team, that wouldn't have helped us.

Monday, Dec 16:
Kennesaw St @ GTech
Illinois St @ Oakland (-5)
W/ final exams at a lot of places, and ramping up to christmas break, its a very slow day on the hardwood. There is not a single game between two teams that currently are 2 games or more over .500 (which includes any games against sub D1 opponents).

A team that was supposed to be good (better than UD according to some of their fans) should be able to handle Morehead St., North Carolina A&T, VMI, and Miami OH even with injuries. And in my opinion with pretty much everyone back from their team last year, they were more injury bitten last year than this year. They just are not that good.

didn't know WSU was doing that poorly, so I looked and they have an RPI of 325.
I also took at look at Charlotte who joined the bad CUSA. Even with their tourney win earlier they have an RPI of 144 and CUSA is a conference where 9 of the 16 teams have an RPI greater than 200. I hope the football thing works out for them.

The A-10 goes 2-1 (12-17-13)
The A-10 tonight:
Duquesne with a road win at St Francis (PA) 78-71
VCU with an easy home win over Wofford 72-57.
St Bonaventure with a road loss at Wake Forest 62-77
The Bonnies held an eight point lead at the half, but the Demon Deacons outscored them 49-26 in the second half. Wake Forest Gump has played no true road games this season, going 1-2 on a neutral court in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Their only true OOC road game is at Xavier Dec 28.

Our guy Matt Derenbecker and the University of New Orleans won a big one on the road at UTEP. MD had 12 (8 in the last few minutes). The article about the game, and about how far UNO has come since Katrina, is a good read.

A Lesson for UD
South Carolina hosted the Manhatten Jaspers from the Metro Atlantic and were favored to win at home by 5 points as they were the better defensive team and from the superior SEC.
But South Carolina did not respsect the name on the front of the opponent's jerseys and forgot to play defense. Manhatten won 86-68 to jump past the second placed Iona Gaels in their conference Sagarin rating. BRING THE "D" on thursday at home or lose!

Geron Johnson seems to have matured down in Memphis. Had a nice stat line in a 2 point loss to #15 Florida. He's quite an athlete. Too bad it took so long for him to get started. It doesn't seem possible that he is a senior alteady.

I said it when he signed w/ Memphis, and perhaps this has come to light (or perhaps it wouldn't have mattered) but it was probably best for Geron that he didn't sign w/ UD after Juco (not sure how hard we recruited him at that point) as the kid needed a "fresh" start and to get away from the environment he found himself here. Hopefully he's matured to the point where he can make money off of his skills.

I've determined, after careful consideration and analysis, that rooting for A10 team in the OOC to boost the strength of the conference thus achieving greater recognition that will hopefully lead to additional bids and increasing our beloved Flyers chances of making the dance in March... is Madness.

A 30-16 halftime advantage ballooned to 48-18 four minutes into the second half thanks mainly to full-court defensive pressure. After playing at Jackson's pace for 20 minutes, OSU coach Travis Ford decided it was time to play at his pace the rest of the way.
It seems like Del St does the same thing every game. Some coaches force the pace. I wonder if Archie wanted to make the Flyers work against the packed in zone rather than try to open things up?

correct me if I'm wrong. We root for A10 teams this year in conference games but mainly the top 6.
And hope the top 6 have great Rpi's and OOC wins. And fewer 8-8 teams, and more 12-4 teams. With the Lasalle's and Fordhams down at 3-15.
Right around New Year's everyones play and RPI'S begin to change rapidly

I follow Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports on Twitter and he knows his stuff about college basketball. He's been talking up Manhatten since before the season started. They are a good team. The Iona game scares me. The Flyers better bring it like they are in Maui.

Baylor fell asleep at home last night, getting pushed to OT before finally prevailing over Northwestern State.
#10 UConn with a bad home loss to Stanford. UConn took a 43-30 lead with nearly 17 minutes to go in the game, and then lost 53-51.
Our old A10 pal Aaric Murray with 48 points in a Texas Southern road win at Temple, 90-89. Temple drops to 4-5 on the year. Maybe Mike Davis has figured out how to unleash the beast. Murray got talked up so much when he was with LaSalle, and never really amounted to anything. I guess we'll see where that goes from there.

I saw Texas Southern play a game earlier this year. Coming out of half, they showed a clip of Mike Davis really laying a toungue lashing on Aaric Murray, so I wouldn't say he's quite figure out how to unleash the beast, I'd imagine going back home to Philly provided a little dose of motivation that no coach is capable of. Kid is immensely talented, but to say he had a 10 cent head would be an insult to the dime.

Last night:
Saint Joes dumped Drexel by 20, very solid win for the hawk
UMass won by 12 @ Ohio, impressive.
Winthrop lost @ NC Central (I believe NCC won at NC state, so they're probably decent)
Ole Miss won by 13
SLU picks up a solid win over Indiant St winning by 17 at home

I went over the see Texas upend North Carolina in a game that had 55 fouls and 80 free throws. However the refs did not overcall the fouls. If anything I thought they let them play through some real roughness. It was obvious Texas was fouling NC on purpose whenever they had a free path to the basket or a shot. NC responded by shooting 51% from the free throw line, while Texas shot 61%. It was one ugly display of free throw shooting. It got so bad that in the second halfthat the NC fans were giving ovations to their guys whenever they made a foul shot. Texas is for real. They are very quick and rebound really well, 51 rebounds and 20 offensive. Texas will be a big force next year, as they have no seniors and no players that should leave early.

They schedule that way every year under Munson. Their shot at the dance is winning the Big West. Non-con gets them ready for it.
