2016 Recruiting Thread
No idea why the old was locked, but here's a new Recruiting thread...
First, just a repost of a video featuring our new recruits.
http://nextuprecruits.com/2014/09/10...2-new-mixtape/
We have also offered Seth Towns, a junior featured in that video. I think he's one of the most impressive looking players in the video.

Derek is 6'7" or 6'8", and plays center. Seems like he has some work to do on his offensive game. He is getting some high D1 attention, so he must have some great potential.

You guys won't let this recruiting thread die will you. If there are recruits for 2017, create a 2017 Recruiting and and put it there. We started moving in that direction a month ago.

Now that 2015 recruiting class is done, can we focus on 2016?
2016 is loaded with Ohio Talent.
Nick Ward, Derek Funderburk, Seth Towns, Xavier Simpon, Derrick Daniels, Omari Spellman. A lot of solid big guys in this class. Hopefully we can land a few of them

A transfer or juco in this group wouldn't surprise me ,for maturity and experience , but Derrick Daniels is got to be a major target ,and I think Frankie Hughes is Also.

Hopefully by staying loyal to Scott and Robinson trough all of their troubles will help us land Seth Towns. Seth plays at Northland Highschool which as produced Burke, Sullinger, Weatherspoon, Robinson, and Scott.
Towns and Daniels would make a great 1-2 punch for many years
Sadly, Jim Boeheim came in a stole Matt Moyer from us. He was a really talented 2016 prospect from Ohio.

Listed at 6'10" or 6'11" and only 210 lbs, but seems we are getting in early on a kid who has great potential.

I am here at the "Beach Ball Classic" in Myrtle Beach South Carolina watching a high school basketball tournament. Seth Towns, a University of Dayton target, is playing in this tournament for Columbus Northland. Yes, that is the same school where Mr. Scott and Mr. Robinson attended and played their high school basketball. That's the same two guys who have been released from the University of Dayton basketball program for unspeakable actions over the last 3 years and particularly recently.
Here is my unprofessional scouting of Seth Towns. He is a junior. He is 6'7" or shorter, as advertised. He is very thin. The advertised 200 pounds is probably close or he is a little lighter. He is a smooth athlete. He is definitely a basketball player and I can see why schools including the University of Dayton are interested in him. He jumps and can dunk. He dribbles the ball very well. He can make his own shot. He has good form on his shot. Columbus Northland lost the first game. They won the second game. He competed in the 3 point shooting competion and he did OK. He did not win.
But, does the University of Dayton EVER recruit another player from Columbus Northland High School? Does the bad taste in the mouth make another recruit from this school seem inappropriate? Would fellow students look at him with distrust? Would it be unfair to saddle him with this type of bad-rap baggage? Would it be unfair to make the connection to him based upon the bad behavior of two other people from his same school?
Note: The leader of the Columbus Northland team is not Seth Towns, it is another guy who is a senior. The guy's name is Doug Taylor (6'8"). I say this based upon my observations of body language. Doug Taylor looks like a man among boys. I am very impressed. He treats everyone on the team with respect. When the team runs either on or off the court (during practice or otherwise); Doug Taylor leads and rest of the team (the whole bunch of them); follow him. However, just as I am impressed by Doug Taylor's leadership potential; I am a little disappointed in his play on the court. He seems to be always out of position on defense (not blocking out and then reaching over the top to try to rebound) and on offense (gets pushed under the backboard and then attempts to reach out to take a shot).

If a kid can play, and if he seems to have a good head on his shoulder, it would be pretty silly for a coach to not recruit him based off the school he was attending. You might steer clear of a school that was a diploma mill or was causing academic eligibility issues, but you can't say "well, that school only produces criminals and knuckleheads." I guarantee you there are other cases of two kids who have gotten in trouble at UD who went to the same high school, maybe separate years, and separate incidents, but UD can't just say "okay, we're not going to admit any more students from that school." This is classic over-reaction. We're smart enough as a society I would think to judge people for who they actually are.

Yes - it seems pretty ridiculous to not recruit from a high school anymore just because two previous graduates made bad decisions. Talk about weird generalizations! How wide are your brush strokes?

Jared Sullinger and Trey Burke went to that school as well. They turned out to have a decent head on their shoulders and be decent players.

2016 SG from Ibi Watson from Pickerington Central was at the game today behind the bench. He had a pink cast on his hand for a broken thumb. Expected to miss 6-8 weeks. We offered him a scholly in the fall.

Well, he certainly knows how to finish around the hoop. He appears to have some strong defensive skills as well. He looks like a prototype 4 to me.

Don't know anything about this kid, but if you type "Dylan Painter" into google translate and specify you want English to Bill Raftery, this is what it spits out:
Dylan Painter - he's an artist. A painter!
And how about this masterpiece?
A little HERSHEY KISS from Dylan!

With Putnam Science Academy's transition to Woodstock Academy, you think Mark Few got kind of excited? I don't know how he does it, but the man somehow finds every Bill Walton-loving, Grateful Dead listening, long-haired 3 star or better recruit in the country. Got to be some who turn up at Woodstock, right?

Worth noting that Archie had a good view of that open gym:
@daveborges
#UConn's Glen Miller, PC's Brian Blaney, Cuse's Gerry McNamara, Archie Miller saw Mammadou Diarra, Hamidou Diallo in open gym last night.

If he does end up with us, every time he scores the Arena could be filled with "Mama" sung out like the first word of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Or, just every time he throws down a bad mamma jamma. The possibilities are endless. Definitely passes the all-important sweet name recruiting criteria.

Interesting note about Archie checking in on Xavier Simpson, a 2016 pg out of Lima who holds some Big Ten offers.

Nick Ward just committed to Michigan State. I'm not sure how hard UD was recruiting him lately but I know we had offered.

An up-and-coming Michigan recruit from Pickerington (Ohio) Central High School -- former home of Caris LeVert -- is picking up high-major offers.
Ibi Watson, a 2016 shooting guard who previously held offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Dayton, Duquesne, Miami (Ohio), Ohio and Toledo, ESPN.com, reported on Twitter that he's landed a scholarship offer from Indiana.
Beilein reportedly watched Watson over the weekend and the three-star guard visited U-M in February.

Well, he could go to some average program like Michigan, or he could go to a guaranteed Sweet 16 (and possibly, probably more) monster like Dayton. Depends on if he wants to be mediocre or with a winner like Archie. His decision will show his character and desire.

Oh how we forget they went to the National Title game 3 years ago and made the elite 8 the same year we did. They had a down year because of losing 3/5 of their starting lineup including their 2 best players. Yes we only had 7 players for half the year, but we were only down 1 starter.

Love this tweet:
"RT @NWAVernon: Big offer for Payton Willis. Flyers arguably stronger program than most SEC schools right now. #arpreps https://t.co/s8euql…"
Interesting that he has no offer from U of Arkansas, which is in his hometown?? or OK or Missouri or AR State.

Read some quotes that indicated he'd really love that Arkansas offer, but I suppose there hasn't been much pressure on Arkansas to offer until now. Will be interesting to see if they do though I have no idea their scholarship situation.

So maybe to answer my own question, Arkansas is heavily involved with Malik Monk, a guard from Bentonville, AR, who is the #6 player in the class. If he falls through, I am sure Willis will be more of a consideration

Simeon's Evan Gilyard
The 5-foot-9 point guard is not obsessed with playing at a major-conference school the way some recruits are, but he has at the very least made his way onto the radar with his inspired play for Meanstreets' 16U and 17U teams this month. . . The former diamond in the rough has offers from UIC, Green Bay and Chicago State and is hearing from an increasing number of college coaches.
" Dayton, DePaul, Kansas, Loyola, Bradley," he said. "Texas is talking to my AAU coach about me. Georgetown is too. I just want to play at a school with a good support system that works hard and makes their players better."

Per Adam Zagoria, Vital is scheduled to take an official visit to Dayton Sept 4-6. Seems like a good sign.
According to the above Verbal Commits link, he has offers from 9 (!!!) A10 teams, UNLV, Boston College, and Tulsa, among others.

It's easy to fall into the "low number of stars" trap for recruits. Our staff has earned their well-deserved respect for identifying and developing talent that has been glossed over by the big programs in D-1. Our current roster is living proof of that.
It would be icing on the cake to break the hearts of 8 other A10 teams chasing Mr. Vital.

I have stopped paying attention to stars, as there seems to be little logic to them. Likewise rating numbers, as they go up or down based on where a player commits. My barometer is what school has offered a player. Coaches and offers don't tend to lie.

This is probably a good call. My barometer is similar: if Archie likes him, I like him.
Jack, you may not want to click this link but it lists the top ranked recruits out of New England.
Also, just a quick note on Evan Gilyard, mentioned above. He's a 2017 recruit, I'm pretty sure. We will definitely want to get a PG in that class to balance things. I always think it's best to have a true point guard in every other class. A freshman can learn from the junior, get quality minutes as a sophomore backing up a senior, then lead the way once he's a jr/sr.

I notice two Canadian centers on the New England list, who are getting some D1 interest, but UD not listed.

Long story, but I watched the UD- SLU game yesterday and Ben Howland was singing the praises of Big Steve. Said he had been at practice watching and Steve was the real deal. So we add 6'11" Steve, 6'9" Sam Miller, 6'9"-ish Xeyrius Williams, and the following year, 6'7" Josh Cunningham.
At this point, Archie can be very selective with his offers. The fact that we have a wing in Trey Landers coming in, and he seems to be targeting another wing in Vital tells me he's comfortable with our bigs for the next couple of years. Surely we will target a big for 2017, and I think we already have a couple offers out, but Archie seems to be going after guards/wings for 2016 with our remaining spot.
And like SDF said, coach seems to like versatile, interchangeable guys. Last year of course we were forced to go small but our defense relies on switching and help. I'd love to have a 6'10" guy who can play inside or out, but so would every other team. We might have two of those guys coming in this year in Miller and Williams. Not 6'11" of course but close enough.
Anyway, I hope Vital loves it here and decides he doesn't need any more visits.

It sure would be nice if we had a center backup for McElvene in case of injury. Also, I am seeing shorter measurements of height than you just listed for both Miller and X. Williams.
Also, I am still reading that McElvene is a "project". So, we may still start 6'5"/6'6" Pollard at center in order to run efficiently at times.

Miller is 6'9", 244 lbs. That's your backup center.

Don't believe it unless Archie repeats it. All indications are that development-wise, Steve is now an incoming Freshman, who by all measures isn't any more of a project than the other Freshman.
He has 4 years to develop his established base of talent like all the rest of them.
Those who continue to repeat the "project" label are swapping ignorance.

Only another two months until we see what kind of project we may be talking about.

IMO:
Big-time centers (top 25 NBA draft picks) are for national championship contenders. I don't honestly think we're there yet, though a big-time center is probably the biggest of all factors we're missing. These are rare.
Small-time centers are for coaches who think they must have a traditional center to win. It keeps the fan base at bay to say "we took a shot at a 6'11" guy and he just didn't pan out." These are plentiful.
In the middle are guys with specific skill sets, typically defense, that are handy against certain teams. On a day-to-day basis they can hamper the offense because of a lack of skill and are most useful on defense when your guards don't play proper D (meaning the answer is to play better D). These are somewhat rare but not totally uncommon.
I haven't seen Steve so I can't say where I think he fits, but history tells me Miller would not have offered if he thought Steve was small time.

you don't need 6-10" players to compete on the inside, the flyers have had plenty of guys that sized who were nothing more than someone standing 6-10. What you need are guys who are both capable, and willing to play tough on the inside, fight for spacing, fight for boards, bang the opposing team's big players and not back down.
Both Pierre & Pollard have shown they are more than capable of playing tough down low. In 2 seasons, UD will have Big Steve, X, Miller, and Cunningham joining Pollard down low. Add a year + in the weight room to transform their bodies similar to what Pollard & Pierre have done, and all have the frame to play tough inside; only 1 of them will be over 6-9 (Unless they grow an inch or two; it wouldn't surprise me if X grew another inch or two before he steps off campus.) That is plenty of size to play inside, and enough skilled players to space the floor and open up lanes. Certainly nothing is guaranteed at this point, but the biggest position of need for the 2016 & 2017 classes is finding another PG. Schoochie will be a senior in 2016, in 2017 they'll need somebody to play PG alongside Crosby. If I was Archie, my main focus would be finding a guy capable of playing PG with a good shot. If Archie thinks Vital is that guy, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

No better example of that was the Stanford team in Memphis.
Nastic 6'11"
Powell 6"10"
Gage 6'10"
And we punked them.

I would take Nastic and Powell any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Either of those guys would have been a force in the A10.

Not sure what the infatuation is based on. Nastic averaged 7 pts/3 rebounds as a Junior. His Senior year his shooting dropped 11% to 47%. Those are bordering Kurt Huelsman-ish numbers. That's not a high bar for Big Steve.
Currently overrated and playing in Serbia.
Dwight Powell has the best shot. He's got a chance with the Mavs who will look at anyone right now who can touch the rim while standing on tip toes. Time will tell.
These two guys led Stanford to a 10 seed and a dominating loss in the Regionals to somebody. And then a nice NIT run. We are better with what we have.

So like if Dayton had to defend Shaq in his prime, Pollard and Pierre wouldn't be able to defend him. But on the same token, Shaq couldn't really guard them, until they got to the rim at least. It's all about execution. What Big Steve provides in theory -- if he really develops as we all hope he has or can in the future -- is another way Dayton can beat you. It's pretty rare to have a front court with guys as quick and strong and skilled as Pierre and Pollard. It's even rarer to have that PLUS an NBA-sized legit center.

Nastic was better than any of our bigs in that Sweet 16 game. We had no answer. If he stays out of foul trouble, it might have been a different story. Really no comparison to Kurt if you watched him play.
Powell was a 2nd round draft pick, while UD hasn't had a player drafted in 25+ years. Not sure how you can sneeze at that.

This. Plus, if I remember correctly, these 2 gave Kansas some issues in the Third Round game.
