I don't know, reviewing those numbers has me nervous. UD's SOS is ranked significantly worse this year.
I'm thinking it might take 24-6 or 23-7 plus 1-1 or 2-1 in the A10 tourney.
Marshall and Southern Miss appear to have gotten a bad deal once each if you just look at rpi and SOS.
Cleveland State and another team in 2013? had a rpi in the low 40's with a SOS around 100, and they didn't make it, UD so far has a very similar profile.

Davidson does a great job of spacing the floor and moving the ball. Now the Flyers are playing small they can do a lot more of that ... move the ball quickly

The last 10 minutes of second half and the boards belonged to Virginia, who played at home. Energetic Davidson team and Gibbs is a handful.

Davidson reminds me a lot of UD. Great hustle, spacing and passing with a minimum of turnovers. Virginia wins it 83-72

I watched some of that game. They played Virginia toe-to-toe for most of the game. I am not sure how deep the team is, but they are certainly well coached and play with a lot of discipline. I am not looking forward to going to their house later this season.

RPI will take a beating at the beginning of the A10 season because strength of schedule will drop. Duquesne will kick things off at an RPI of 269.

Equally important is the no. 39 SOS. whoever it was that thought our OOC schedule was weak had better think again.
The only concern now is the overall weakness of the A10. We have to win a lot of games to be in a good position for an at large.

not only do you rarely ever see it, but to have it happen at the buzzer likely makes that exact scenario a first.

St. Bonnie's really bad RPI now with the loss to Delaware. The problem we are @St. Bonnie's which is not an easy place to play. This likely would be a sub-100 bad loss which we cannot afford.

Ohio State ****es me off
Glen Clark touched on this in a previous post. OSU will go 10-8 in the somewhat weak big 10 and get a 5 or 6 seed. Their non-con schedule (every year) this year is a pile of steaming brown dog$$$$. They beat Marquette at home and the rest of their wins are against horrible, god-awful teams. This team gets respect based off of the projected ability of their top recruits. Thad Matta doesn't even have to put a quality team on the court and they're pretty much guaranteed a tourney bid. It's horse____.
Maybe we'll get lucky and get to beat them again.
I will always smile thinking about that image of Craft and his rosy red cheeks laying there on the court a loser, at the hands of UD.
Here's hoping the Crimson tide ram it up their $$$$$ tomorrow.

Can't figure out UConn. They looked pretty good in Puerto Rico against UD. they laid an egg the next day against WV, but WV has made a lot of teams look bad this year.
UConn has the talent. I expect them to kick it in soon.

And the Demons are in a 2-way tie for 1st in the BE. Nice to see OP finally having some success coaching our old "frenemy". And especially at X's expense!

Once Again
Again this year, with an RPI of 18 and a SOS of 46, the Dayton Flyers have done the heavy lifting for the A-10 Conference in the OOC portion of the basketball season.
I don't want to hear anyone talk about how much we owe the A-10. We've given at the office year after year.

Loved the Depaul/ XU score.
Rooting for GT. They blew a big lead and lost in 2 OTs.
BU did win in front of that tiny crowd, so that's good.
GW beat St. Joe's. URI beat SLU. Davidson was lengthening its lead on Richmond last I looked.
We have to win the next 3 games against "lesser" opponents before we have to play the "better" ones.

I'm glad we kicked them out of the league. They are getting more and more embarrassing.
Some of their fans are wishing for the gansta squad to return down there. They are posting brawl photos on the Holy Land of Hoops website. I think that the mandatory reflection session would have been good for them in the long run. A missed opportunity.

Full slate today
12/3/15

Hartford 49 @ Texas A&M 58
UConn 63 @ Florida 59

UConn is turning out to be a bad loss. And don't tell a UD fan about injury problems! We could have, and should have won that game.

Florida is #144 in RPI, 1-5 versus top 100 and 3-1 versus 101-200. After beating the poor Gator team, Uconn is #85 in RPI and 1-5 versus top 100 with their only top 100 win versus Dayton. Take the names off the jerseys and both are bad teams thus far this year.

I don't think the UConn loss will be a bad loss come March. UConn has not played very well, but I think their fortune will improve in conference play. They have elite players on that team, and they know how to win.

OOC opponent score:
Cleveland State 74 @ U Illinois-Chicago 69

South Dakota State 69 @ North Dakota State 72 (game-time temp in Fargo -10, windchill -30)

For all of you raving about how NBA like the Kentucky team was after the UCLA game, check out the Utah score. KY is very good, but UCLA is mediocre and was way overrated.
I watched some of the VCU game. They of course press the heck out of you, other that they play out of control and shoot poorly. Our style right now, with great passing and no turnovers, may give us the edge.

Smart will do to us what he did to Akron when they lost PG Alex Abreu. He will do an ALL OUT/all the time full court press using 11 players. The only way to make a pressing team pay is to break it and waste no time going to the basket (or too taking that open 3 in sequence). We cannot win either way, because to do that makes it an up tempo game. VCU will want to run up and down the floor with us. How are five or six going to last before complete exhaustion against a team that can play 11 all too well (& does so)?
Dayton can beat teams much better than VCU WHEN we are in the NCAA, but it is near impossible to match up with VCU at their home court.
I think even if we stun them early, we can at best make it a closer game.
What do I know? Still, I hope VCU players have a terribly bad meal before play and are taking turns going to the bathroom instead of the basket.
Heck Jack72, we have good ball handlers...maybe we get them early and they ease the press. Then I suppose if our 3's go in it could be interesting.
Thanks.

#16 Oklahoma 70 @ #10 Texas 49 - halftime score 33-14 (!) Oklahoma
Texas State 77 @ Georgia State 74 (OT) - Texas State scored more points in overtime (20) than they scored in the first half (17)
Elon 53 @ Towson 57 - Gavrilovic 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 2, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3 points

GW defeats SLU 75-72 in DC. The colonials narrowly escape a big upset. GW even trailed by 10 for a large portion of this game. In the last few minutes GW gave up a comfortable lead to a few SLU three point shots. GW still up three, they make a bad pass in their half of the court and it goes out of bounds. SLU wastes almost the entire remaining 22 second, but get one last chance to inbound with 1.5 left. SLU gets off a corner three and is blatantly founded by GW on the arm but no call, the shot misses, game over.
Milik Yarbrough had 26 pts for SLU. Made some pretty difficult shots. I'd like to see how well Kyle Davis defends him.

To get an idea of what a great defender Kyle is, the little guard on Ole Miss put up 25 against KY and didn't play the last 8 minutes because of cramps. Kyle completely shut him down and held him to 5 points.

Agree. Kentucky was favored by 23 but if Moody had played the entire game you have to wonder.

I would guess because the consensus was that Davidson was not going to be very good (hence the 12th place in pre-season A10 voting).
The game is on MASN, DirecTV Ch 640, if you have the Sports Pack.

VCU favored by 9.5 at home tonight over Davidson, I thought that one would be closer.
Syracuse favored by 2 tonight at GT, another big opportunity for BG to get another marquee win.

Problem right now is we have not beaten one team who would receive an at-large bid to the NCAA. We need Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and GTech to go on a streak. We also need to beat VCU, Davidson, and/or GW. That is the glaring weakness in our resume this year. Other power conference teams will get 10-15 opportunities to beat NCAA teams. This is also the difference with last year's resume at this point.

Davidson (+9.5) @ VCU
SJU (PK) @ Duquesne
Syracuse (-4) @ GTECH
UMass (+3.5) @ LaSalle
Fordham (+15) @ Rhody
Ball St (+13) @ Eastern Michigan
Bowling Green (+2.5) @ Kent St
Buffalo (-6) @ Miami (Oh)
Boston U (NL) @ Navy
Then outside of games vs future and past UD opponents, there are a handful of interesting games:
Seton Hall #19 (+7.5) @ Xavier
Kansas #12 (+3) @ Baylor #21
Wyoming (+5) @ Colorado St (Both teams are in the at large discussion, would be nice had we offered Larry Nance, Jr, he could definitely have helped this season. Already had his sister on campus, so you know he was familiar, but the offer never got extended)
Maryland #11 (-1) @ Illinois (Illinois leading scorer is out the next 6 weeks, can they hold serve at home?)

I would argue that if the season ended RIGHT NOW, not only would everyone be totally surprised, but Georgia Tech would get a bid. They've beaten Georgia and Rhode Island, two teams that are in the discussion.

You would be in the minority. At bracketmatrix.com 14 of 45 brackets have Ga Tech in the field. They are the 6th team out on the aggregate rankings of the 45 brackets.

The only non-conference team projected in field is Arkansas (7 seed).
Only VCU (4), GW (8), and Dayton (8) are projected in from the A10. Getting one of those two road games would be huge for UD's at large chances. Davidson is among the second four out.
Having only 3 games against teams in the NCAA field is not a strong resume. The margin of error for UD is very thin this year.

I can only imagine. Boeheim plays zone exclusively, and Gregory doesn't know how to attack a zone. When GT had the ball and SU was on D, that probably set-back the sport by @ 75 years.

A lot of games in the past 3-4 days not going the right way for us.
- GT loses two heartbreakers, at ND and at home to SU
- BC loses in overtime to Pitt
- Ole Miss loses in overtime to UK @ Rupp
- TA&M gets drilled, filled, & killed by our man Anthony Grant and his Crimson Tide
Overall, not good. Looks like our SOS is going to be more of an SOL, unless those 3 BCS teams from the south can get their feces aggregated, and quickly.

Ga Tech up one, Syracuse ball inbounds w/28 seconds left. Ga Tech had a foul to give. Syracuse works the ball inside to Rakeem Christmas at 13 seconds and he is fouled a second later in the act of shooting. Christmas makes two free throws - game.
If Christmas is fouled when he receives the pass, Syracuse has to reset their offense.

I stand by my statement, because that site also has Ohio State as a 6 seed. If the season ended today, is Ohio State getting a 6 seed? Heck no. I don't think they are even getting in... their schedule so far has been a joke.
My statement was "if the season ended today"... I think most of those bracket projections are based off of how those sites think the season will end. You can definitely see the dichotomy just based on the wildly varying seeds of OSU. Some have them a 3 seed, some a 12, a few have them out.
Now, if the season ended after the GT-Syracuse game, that's become a different story. I think we all expect GT to probably end up somewhere in the 75-100 RPI range, which is an ok win but nothing to write home about.

I was watching on and off. From what I saw, they had to have set an NCAA record for airballs. Syracuse shot 34.6% and GT shot 26.3%. What was really humorous was after the OT game, they went to the studio hosts who described it as a "thriller."

Well, it sure seems like hell is freezing over here in Dayton, so I suppose DePaul can be leading the Big East too.

Thank you, Glen, for putting this together each morning. It beats the heck out of trying to sort through all of the scores on espn.com.
Listening to the comments after the Georgia Tech/Syracuse game was interesting. The commentators were trying to offer some insight into Coach Gregory's problems. They basically complemented him on his defensive coaching, but then went a bit further. They stated Ga. Tech is last in the country in shooting percentage and has problems with a zone defense. Sound familiar? Feel bad for the guy, but at some point you have to look at the situation and ask yourself whether you are recruiting the right type of kids. If you have a weak coaching spot, how do you get an assistant that can fill the gap of coaching against the zone. Still hoping he is successful, but you have to recognize your weaknesses.

I think on one possession, I saw Gtech pass the ball around the perimeter 4-5 times before it got tipped out of bounds by Syracuse. GTECH inbounds the ball and proceeds to pass the ball around the perimeter another 4-5 times before jacking up an airball from beyond the arc. The longer you watch Gregory, the more obvious his flaws become; shame b/c he seems like an outstanding person. I'm sure he'll land a solid associate head coaching gig somewhere and let him focus on defense, rebounding and installing toughness, all strengths during his coaching tenure.

I agree. Thank you, Glen, for taking the time and doing the Games of Note scores and analysis each AM. Particularly the OOC scores.
I thought the A10 scores were interesting. Looks like home teams had to sweat a little. Davidson (9.5 underdog) only loses by 6 at VCU. Fordham (15 pt underdog) only loses by 3 at URI. St. Joes loses by 3 at Duquesne in a pick em game. UMass (3.5 pt underdog) beats LaSalle by 6 in Phila. I take heart that the spread for us tonight is, UD +1. Tells me that on a neutral court we would be giving points. Will be watching the game tonight.
Except to hope the BG succeeds wherever he is, I really don't care about BG or GT. In the cruel words of Mr. Wonderful on Shark Tank, he is "dead" to me.
I watched the SHU \ Xavier and Creighton \ DePaul games with interest. Could DePaul finally be rejuvenating its program? Who knows, could Fordham be next?

Not much on tap for Flyer opponents tonight, good thing we'll be preoccupied from 7-9:30ish.
George Mason (+5.5) @ Richmond
UIC (+15) @ Valpo
Elsewhere:
MSU (+2.5) @ Iowa
Arizona (-5.5) @ Oregon (not many realistic eyeraising upsets out there, perhaps this is one)
Memphis (+8) @ SMU

Right now, Georgia Tech is our highest ranked win in the RPI (47).
For purely selfish reasons I want them to win every game they play this season - but when they're not on our schedule
the never-ending BG discussion belongs in the OTG forum.

Yup...we sure do...AND...it ain't gonna happen often enough, if at all.
(With all due respect to Glen and his suggestion that BG discussions be aired elsewhere, you'll plz beg my pardon cause I'm too tired to mosey on...)
BG isn't gonna win many close games that matter because, well, all you have to do is watch the end of last night's GT / 'Cuse (game?) and you'll see. Not a BG hater at all. I really loved the guy and always thought, and then wished, he was a better coach/basketball mind, but he isn't. Granted he isn't out on the court turning the ball over or running around in circles at critical moments of the game. But when the scene is repeated often enough, and with different players....well, then it's a duck.
I wish BG was a better coach and that he had cemented himself into the UD Arena and Flyer history for a good long time. But he isn't, and that becomes more evident every time I watch his teams play.....especially when I'm not wearing the red and blue shades and gulping Hairy Buffalo.
Won't compare AM to BG (coaching-wise) as I'm sure that will get some into a lather. Just sayin BG has holes in his game that he probably will never fill.

A cold and snowy Thursday night
1/8/15
A-10 scores:
Dayton 78 @ St Bonaventure 61 - the Bonnie's Youssou Ndoye's streak of ten straight games with double digit rebounds ends (9)
George Mason 65 @ Richmond 75
OOC opponent:
U Illinois-Chicago 56 @ Valparaiso 85
The Flyers (hopefully) got out of town, as there is a lake effect snow warning for the Olean, NY region.
On to Fordham . . .

I got a kick out of the report on CBS Sports tonight. The men couldn't stop raving about Dayton's play against St. Bon. Finally the woman in charge said she knew how they felt, but they HAD to move on, lol. They showed highlights and discussed the game for close to 5 mins. And while I watched them rave, my heart swelled with even more pride.

I am coming around a bit on Glen. He thinks completely opposite of me and it still ****es me off he red pipped me for stating i booed the hell out of the Marcus Johnson Senior class and Gregory on Senior Night for the train wreck year. But, this Games of note cant be easy and i too appreciate it. AND he is man enough to sign his pips. I have gone from disliking Glen to an "agree to disagree" attitude.
Keep up the good work
