Tom Crean? This late in the game, he made actually be a good retread hire. Still a big name and big success at Marquette.

Hire a coach who plans to upgrade to a better job in 5 to 6 years. Don't hire a retread. Hire a climber.

I have a hard time believing this stuff. Do you have an inside source or could you PM?

Im aware of the Holloway stuff, so i specifically know what you are referencing.

After this all plays out it will be interesting to compare the rosters, talent wise, 2011–12 vs. 2017-18.

From reading on Kelsey, I am not a fan....

Left Xavier as an assistant siting "personal reasons" when there were rumors flying about his wife....

Goes to Winthrop...Signs a deal with UMass....then promptly reneges on the deal...citing personal reasons....and his wife's happiness...

If this guy honestly didn't have issues and cited "personal reasons" due to bad timing and other job openings coming up...then he just isn't that smart to have committed in the first place.

Got a feeling there is baggage here.

Tom Crean baby. There will always be opportunities to hire a young climber, and it's always a bit of a risk. Crean has connections and is a good fit IMO. He wants to coach again right away. He was decent at IU. He took Marquette to the Final Four, and all the recruits know Dwyane Wade.

Their fans hate anyone not named Bob Knight. They will probably hate Archie in four years. Crean is way more proven than JOB, who never held a D 1 head coaching job before coming to UD.

What makes you think that? In six years at IPFW he went 82–97 - the 2 coaches to follow him, in 5 years, have a combined 92-72 record

Joe Pasternak at Arizona would be a good choice. I'd really like Travis Steele from Xavier

Hiring from within just hold to recruits isn't a good idea or hiring someone just because you think they'll stick around isn't either

Agree, cannot hire a current assistant based on keeping recruits. Should be more of a long term view taken by the Administration.

I know nothing about Ostrom, Griffin, or Kuwik. That said, about the only "out of work head coach" I'd consider would be Anthony Grant. He's shown he can win at this level (while at VCU), he has connections in the NBA, and he's a class act. Beyond him as a candidate, there's a lot to be said for continuity in a program at our level (see Butler, X, etc.).

I am really hoping for Anthony Grant. It might be a long shot; however, I love his UD roots, success as VCU head coach, assistant at Florida under Billy Donovan and NBA assistant job.

I think he is able to keep most recruits with his NBA ties and UD history.

Here's to hoping!

Go Flyers!

I wouldn't hire from within just to keep recruits. My priorities for hiring from within would be (a) if I thought we already had the right coach in-house, (b) at our level, continuity is important to sustained success, and (c) more of our recruits would be more likely to stay, thus supporting Point (b) and helping to prove-out Point (a).

Don't know if AG would be in the hunt or not. It would be nice to get a coach that has a real possibility of being a UD lifer though. Not advocating for AG, just see the possibility of of a real long term committment as a plus.

Do you think _avier screwed us by continuing to win NCAA tournament games. I was hoping Indiana would go for Chris Mack, but apparently the Hoosier folks are smarter than I thought.

Our last MSU assistant was a great guy and good recruiter but not so great game day coach. Why Fife? And has the Izzo tree produced any outstanding coaches anywhere else?

I just sent an email to Neil Sullivan to this effect (Yes I did!). I think Anthony could hold on to most of those recruits.

Fife in six years at IPFW went 82–97 - the 2 coaches to follow him, in 5 years, have a combined 92-72 record

I see nothing to convince me he can be a good coach at UD

All right, we are all susceptible to being fooled in our emotional state. Is this "our" just your and your insider's belief or is "our" the University?

There was a line in the Indiana release where Archie said he would lay out his plan for Indiana and show his appreciation to Dayton on Monday. When I read it, I wondered if that had anything to do with a quick transition already in place. But I resigned myself to it just meaning he would say thanks.

It's AG for me. I like the idea of keeping all of Archie's assistants in place.

AG would definitely get the Don Donoher seal of approval.

First, I think it is good news that we are in a position that this quickly a reputable national outlet is speculating on our coaching search.

Second, I was surprised that Anthony Grant wouldn't be on the list. And not saying he would or should be considered but I would have thought King Rice would have been mentioned.

The list seems geographically limited.

I would not hire Kelsey. I have heard from a source that he backed out of another position beside UMAss. Not a good track record.

Not impressed with AG's tenure at Bama. Recruiting at a Power 5 school, he couldn't beat the Flyers in two tries. Seems introverted to me. If so, it's a serious recruiting shortcoming. I favor a younger lion with both the personality to recruit and the intellect to do a great job with the XOs.

My votes-

1. Kuwik or Ostrom
2. AG
3. Not sure I have anyone else I like from names being thrown around. Can we afford Shocka or Dnutz?

Keeping all of Archie's assistants is a pipe dream regardless of who is made the head coach. They might keep one if he is promoted to head coach but the other two would be gone and two and probably all three would be gone if not made head coach.

While Archie would not get in the way if any was promoted to head coach, it is likely he would take two with him to Indiana. Ostrom looked to be the lead recruiter on many of the over-recruited players who have committed to Dayton over the last six years as opposed to the three star players. So I would expect him to follow Archie to Indiana and work his magic there.

Note when I say over-recruited players I do not mean they are better than the other players or turned out better than the other players but rather players who based on their high school reputations were presumed power five conference recruits.

But I would hesitate to offer Ostrom the HC job. I have no idea about his coaching skills only that he has great recruiting skills.

Many wanted Grant last time, and instead we got Archie, so in the search committee I trust.

Everybody seems worried about recruits (as am I), but what about transfers?

I wouldn't be remotely surprised if any of the underclassman wanted to jump ship now that true team is no more. As it is we don't have a terrible lineup and I hope it isn't blown up like the recruiting class might be.

Side note myself and another poster live right down the road from Jordan Davis, is it a rules violation to call on him?

DD is a senior to be, so he is staying. Realistically there is only one of those Frosh and Soph that would matter much. I'll trade the whole bunch for all the recruits showing up.

New Coach

Don't worry not a Xavier troll. I wanted to hear what you had to say about Archie. Been there done that. All I would say is that UD is a great program with a fantastic fan base. I really hope they don't settle on Pat Kelsey. Besides the fact that I hate any coach that would do this to a school that committed to them but UD basketball is well beyond a Pat Kelsey type coach. I think Crean is a good pick. Don't know all the reasons why cut him but when you consider he really started from scratch and had 3 Sweet 16s once he got them competitive, many schools would take that. Also, there are a lot of great young coaches. Good luck in your selection. Still love the A-10

Maybe there was a reason Johnny Davis came back to Dayton for the first time in 40 years?

I realize he's 61 but he could still give us a good 5-8 years no?

I talked to Johnny when he was here in Dayton. He has lived on the road in the NBA life too long. He is enjoying the good life in Asheville.

Sorry, but anyone who commits to a school and then backs out doesn't get my vote of confidence. Of course, it could be that UMass reneged on something, but you'd think you wouldn't wait until 15 minutes before your press conference to change your mind.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Izzo wouldn't warn Fife to stay away from UD (maybe Crean but he is really a Jud Heathcoat guy).

I do have concerns about Grant as a recruiter - he had three 20 win seasons at VCU (so never had a season with all of his recruits) and three 20 win seasons at Alabama (years 2-4). His 5th and 6th years at Alabama, with all of his recruits, he went 32-33 - not a lot to go on but enough to make me pause.

I assume, could be wrong, that the assistants do most of the heavy lifting for recruiting and the HC just closes the deal with the great sales pitch. Not to say he doesn't stay in touch or make visits, but you've got to have top notch assistants that can recruit. Assume that AG could make the pitch, given his tenure in the NBA and other parts of background, but no idea what assistants he would have to sign on. So much of recruiting is relationships with HS and AAU coaches, so any assistants have to be strong/experienced in that area.

Overall, I have no idea who UD would/is considering and my opinion isn't worth anything to them. Just do a great job and bring in someone who can continue what AM started.

Recruiting

Doesn't an asst usually lead the recruiting effort...with the HC just involved at the "closing"?

Otherwise, why would retaining all the assistants preserve the incoming class?

Since these gus want to play in the NBA Grant's "connections" could be valuable.

One thing for sure: Neil has had this figured out for a long time; AM's departure comes as no surprise. Neil has a #1 guy, a #2, a #3, etc. We will know by next time this week at the latest.

It's a d@mn shame UD is not a "destination job"....probably never will be.

The only way it becomes destinationjob if the program can compete for Final Fours and National Championships on a regular basis. If it was, Archie would not have left.

Baker Dunleavy, assistant at Villanova, would be worth considering.

That is a name I had not seen mentioned anywhere else. I like it.

LOL I won't fall for that again.

Texted w/@_ClutchCarter. Says he'll know more Sunday abt his commitment to @DaytonMBB. News today: Coach Archie Miler leaving 4 @IndianaMBB

Could that mean we might know who the replacement will be tomorrow?

When was the last time Indiana fit this description?

You're putting a very small group of schools into this category if this is the definition. I just don't see it as so. Dayton can be a destination position for a head coach, if it already isn't.

It could be interpreted that way, but you never know with high school kids. If they do announce something that quick it obviously points to a current assistant being promoted which I'm fine with. It has worked at Butler and Xavier so why don't we try it too.

How about about Xavier's top assistant? Their next in lines have done well.

If he brings their top recruits with him, then it's an intriguing possibility. Otherwise, no thanks.
