Smile MSOC: UD Routs Northern Kentucky 4-0

A 1-0 halftime lead ballooned to a 4-0 victory as three goals in the final 45 minutes capped a dominating Flyer performance over the Northern Kentucky Norse on Friday evening at Baujan Field. Amass Amankona's brace paced UD as they improve to 4-3-0 on the season. NKU falls to 3-3-0.

The first half began with a competitive effort by both teams as each squad traded blows in the offensive half of the field. Neither side completely dominated, but the Flyers did generate some quality scoring chances early in the match. Dayton's best opportunities came on counter-attacks out of their own defensive third. Using the flanks to play balls to the corner flag, or targeting MF Amass Amankona lurking near the center circle, UD did well to defend their own box and counter quickly.

Amankona was active and found many touches of the ball in the first half, switching possession to weak-side players cheating into free space up top. James Haupt was a target on several occasions and NKU eventually had their hands full to keep Dayton from overtaking with numbers pushing forward.

The Norse hung in there however and were able to generate a couple quality scoring chances of their own. But chances near the box and corner kick opportunities were never executed well enough to beat the Flyer back line.

As halftime approached, UD counter-punched on another quick attack out the defensive third, this time when Amankona beat a Norse defender to the ball near the midfield circle. With the jailbreak officially on, Haupt pushed ahead as well and eventually took a pass from Amankona with only the charging Norse goalkeeper to beat. The composed shot to the open net put Dayton up 1-0 in the 42nd minute.

The 1-0 halftime lead felt good considering the first half ran hot and cold for both squads. UD out-shot NKU 9-2 in the first half while corner kicks were three a piece. Still, the match felt closer than the stats.

All that changed in the second half as the Flyers trucked NKU from start to finish. Elevating their game and playing perhaps their best half of the season, UD leveraged their physicality advantage to push NKU players around and win a majority of the loose balls throughout the pitch. Winning the 50/50 challenges created possession and Dayton dominated the run of play over the final 45 minutes. NKU was forced to chase the ball and began wearing down as the match continued.

UD kept getting stronger however.

Amankona scored his first of two goals in the 57th minute when Maik Schoonderwoerd turned baseline and slotted a ball to him at the six yard line for the easy finish. Amankona would strike again in the 87th minute on another quality finish inside the box, then took a well-earned bow after getting substituted off the pitch in the final minutes. Lalas Abubakar made it 4-0 just a minute later on a header in the box to round out the scoring.

In between the three second half goals, Dayton played well as a team and out-worked NKU everywhere they needed or wanted to. UD out-shot NKU 14-7 in the second half including a commanding 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Flyer GK Justin Saliba wasn't tested often but did come up huge on a point-blank shot inside the box mid-way through the second half that could have tied the match at 1-1. Seconds later, UD scored their second goal and the 2-0 game changed the match's complexion for good.

Abubakar dominated the central defense and did a nice job of closing down space or taking good angles or the ball. Haupt put in another workman-like effort while Amankona was the best player on the field for most of the evening.

NKU is not Duke or Notre Dame, but they earned some quality results through the early part of the season and were competitive in their losses. This was by far their worst beating of the season.

Dayton buses to Western Michigan on Sunday.
