FWIW, Moulton was terrible that year averaging 1.4 ppg.

Would be great if Archie could persuade Kosta's big brother to be on campus for the visit. But the NBA schedule would have to cooperate. Would also be a reassuring statement for Kosta's future.

True Team's in his final 3 though it's the only finalist that has not had an official visit by him. As we know, we're also his last Official. That's encouraging.

He was here for a unofficial back in July, so he knows about the university

That's my point. He put us in his top 3 after only an unofficial, and he's announcing after his official visit. It sets up as if he's not the 100% Maryland lock as reported. He's had a taste, and he's coming back for more. Maybe he's taking an official visit to confirm what he already knows.

Talking Let's don't overcomplicate this Darryl

Darryl, this situation is not rock, paper, scissors.

The Irish depend on luck, the Tortugas walk the ball down the court, the Flyers fly high and fast in formation.

It's an easy decision.

247sports still has Daryl Morsell as 100 percent going to Maryland. They have him marked as a Four star selection.

All the people predicting Maryland are Maryland people except for 1. And the 1 person is a VT writer who is only correct 43% of the time on his guesses. I will take my chances.

EDIT: And also, all of those predictions came before his Official visit to Maryland and before he released his top 3.

Zach Kent update: 247sports has him "cool" on Dayton and everyone else. This 6'10" kid has had two coach visits on 10/05. That is Northwestern and Virginia Tech.

Yes, warm or warmer means that there is interest with/to a particular university. So, cool means "not so much". Zach Kent has a Dayton offer but the relationship is "cool".

Since the 6'11" guy from Medina Ohio opted for Michigan and we lost one guy to Northwestern and the next guy to Cincinnati; I don't who is next man up if Morsell opts for Maryland? Anybody got any facts? Notice: i am not asking for guesses. Guesses always seem to build up too much expectation that is not realized.

We also lost out on the 6'9" kid to VCU. VCU is putting together a really good recruiting class. It should easily be in the top 25 when all is said and done.

Assuming that Darryl keeps his October visit for the R&B game, I like UD's chances. He's already visited the other schools in his final 3 for officials recently (don't know how many times, if any he visited them unofficially, I believe he said he'd never been to ND before) and has trimmed it to 3. Is he the type of kid that was going to visit UD no matter what out of respect to those that have recruited him for a long time? Perhaps, but I'm sure those schools used football games as a selling point, while Archie can counter that this is a basketball focused athletic department, we'll fill those seats up in the arena......

I wonder how many, if any of UD's other recruits will make it in for the R&B game.

Think cooling his heels. Negative report but that is often one person's opinion, so? I have a good feeling. Hoops recruiting services never give the small schools a fair-shake it seems. Maryland sounds much better to them than Dayton as it reverberates from their cords to their cubicle walls and back? Who knows why only one service is reporting the trend. I do not trust 247 for hoops reporting yet. Scout and Rivals are still better. 247 has got money and has a broad footprint so maybe going forward they will get better.

I was kind of wondering the same thing, but the fact that we weren't cut before he even came in on an official is encouraging. He's had some encouraging tweets regarding our class. Maybe it's a case of making sure UD is in fact the place he wants to go, maybe he doesn't want to make any rash decisions before he has all the information in front of us. In my opinion it shows a level of maturity from him that shouldn't go unnoticed.

I hope he chooses Dayton, but if he doesn't he seems like a kid that you can really root for and definitely respect the fact that he made a decision based on what is right for him. It definitely seems like a thought out process for him.

I still maintain that the kid had and still has plans to take all his visits before he decides. Its a sign of a mature individual to do so imo as it points to the student's attention to academics and get all the data possible before making a decision where he will get his degree. Not just where he'll play ball.. DM from all accounts seems to be a smart kid. He may go to Maryland but it still points to his character to take all his visits as he said he would. Points to the institution the longer it takes him to decide. I mean Maryland is a great program in a new conference. He's a really good player. I hope he chooses UD

To answer my own question, the only other kid besides Morsell that looks like they have an offer for 2017 that hasn't already committed elsewhere is Dalonte Brown, a "combo forward" from Toledo who has few offers (Toledo has offered), but has increased interest from the likes of Wisconsin in recent days.

If DM wasn't seriously considering Dayton, his decision would have been made by now. How many times do we hear these high school athletes say something like "I'm glad it's over and I can now focus on my high school team's goals." The recruiting is fun and exciting in the beginning, but the longer it takes to make a decision, it starts to take a toll on 17-18 year olds. It's the nature of the beast. If he was 100% Maryland, he wouldn't be coming to UD so many weeks after his visits to Maryland and ND.

UD is his 4th official visit (ND, Maryland, Nova the other 3) he mentioned visiting VTech, but cut them off the list w/o ever making an official visit there (not sure if he made an unofficial or not) and doesn't appear to be headed towards using his 5th official visit either, so he's not taking all of his official visits, just to get a mini vacation and wined and dined.

I agree w/ the poster above, he seems like he's got a decent head on his shoulder and is a kid worth rooting for no matter where he chooses to attend (just hope its UD). Coming from Baltimore, I wonder if he has any connections to Crosby. Crosby once had a late offer to Maryland, but was committed to a year of Prep School and decided to stick with that commitment to work on his game. If you've read any of the stories on Crosby, he seems to be a very level head kid from a rough neighborhood with a mother of gold. Don't know Darryl's background, but if there are connections to Crosby, we could have the mother angle working for UD as well as John's mother seemed very pleased with her son's decision to get away from home a bit and how he was tackling life at UD.

edit: it appears both play for the Team Melo program (same team???) in AAU, so I assume there is at a minimum some sort of connection. Obviously a few years apart, but both would know many of the same people in that program.

Morsell

Darryl has also said he wanted to wait and see how all the pieces fell into place - which to me means who is committing to each of the programs.

Those other schools are going to challenge every year for high level talent and Morsell would be a huge get for UD. He could be the man the minute he steps foot on campus and compete for a starting job.

Early playing time is a huge selling point and if he looks at who we are losing and sees that opportunity I think it gives us an advantage over the others.

Just a thought.

He very well may just choose "Archie Miller and UD"...I'd never ever tell a kid or encourage one to choose a school based solely or even mainly on just the HC but relationships and comfortability are the main attributes that entice a player to a school.

He's evidently been here on his own dime, has established some good ties and friendships, has already commented on this strong class, may just feel he's the one wing that can elevate the class even more, has NOT committed to any of the previous schools, AND has UD as the last visit............If i'm betting on this one he'll be a Flyer..

Short article on Darryl's final three
http://www.phenomhoopreport.com/news...rer_id=1555437

Also - Notre Dame is making their second in home visit tomorrow. Don't know how many of their coaches are coming, but I recall that all of them came on the first.
On Friday he plans to go to Maryland Madness.

Trying to read between the lines. None of his Maryland comments really stood out. If we weren't already assured he was a Marland lock (hee hee) I'd say it's down between a raucous, sold-out UD Arena crowd vs a sleepy, half full Edmund P. Joyce Center crowd.

If he's headed to Maryland Madness, the Flyer Faithful better make sure we bring it to the red-blue scrimmage. Just saying.

The article quoted Morsell as saying that he probably will not make a decision this month. The article is dated 10/11. So, that means no decision in the month of October.

Although generally a nice event, attendance and energy has been limited. Hope he's not comparing the scrimmage to ND football game.

If he comes here, it will likely be more about playing time than anything else.

And thus my two posts about the Flyer Faithful needing to make this year a bigger more exciting turnout. You can make difference. He talked about the fans in the above article. He's attending two kickoff the season scrimmages within a week of each other. It won't be hard to compare. Local fans need to make this a priority if at all possible. And Archie needs to call Red Scare and get them in the gym. Rarely does an entire class make up the entire starting lineup and lead team to a Final Four and beyond run, but this could be one of those classes if we can close the deal with Morsell.

If he makes his decision based on the fan attendance at the red/blue game vs. a scrimmage at UM or ND, he is coming here or going there for all the wrong reasons. I don't think it makes one bit of difference frankly. The current players can tell him how awesome our fans are. The coaches can show a video of the red scare, etc. Give these kids more credit. Maybe, just maybe, he is considering going to a school that fits him best academically, athletically, socially, and perhaps, even spiritually.

Zach Kent Update: Has official visit lined up for 10/15 with Tennessee. Also, Georgia Tech and East Carolina have shown an interest.

I doubt that Miller was after Dalonte Brown. If for some reason we do not get Morsell, the next man up will be someone unknown to us, but Miller and staff are pursuing. It has happened before.

Isaac Kante is a possibility if Morsell doesn't work out. Dayton and St. Joe's are by far his best offers... goes to same prep school that Scoochie went to. 6'8" F/C.

Or possibly Jayvon Graves from Akron St. Vincent/St. Mary. 6'3" guard that has a ton of MAC offers, but it's unclear if he even has an offer from us.

We will land DM, keep a scholly open, and have the best 5 person freshman class next year we have ever had.

Just close this thread now.

Oh, so you're one of those guys who never worries.

I've often wondered what it's like to be that way.

Sadly, I will never know.

I wouldn't bank the scholarship yet. You never know when a top talent might be available because he is a partial qualifier, or if there would be any transfers available. Also, I would never bank a scholarship if there is talent available that can help the team.

If we / when we land DM - what would our 2017 Freshman class be and what positions would each player play at when in a UD uni - not what they are playing now - but what position would they play in College.

I would bank the scholarship unless I am sure that the player you are getting is better than what you could recruit the next year. We have a point guard, two wings/2 guards (if morsell comes), a center and forward (Kostas) coming in next year.

I wouldn't add anyone else unless it was a top 25 player and that is really unlikely. It would probably result in losing a current commitment. And I don't like recruiting over players in the same class who have been a priority for you so I might not take him anyway.

This should be another successful year and scholarships will already be at a premium.

The problem with that is you do not know if a player will stay all for years, battle injuries, have a career ending injury, or is even a bust. I am not suggesting adding a MAC level player, but if we get a solid player or transfer, then go for it. If we ever get in a situation like 2 years ago, when we were forced to give Bobby a scholarship and only have a 7 man rotation, I am sure Archie would love having another scholarship player instead of banking a scholarship.

These guys have not officially signed, nor have they played a minute for UD. We never can have too many good players. Do the Duke's and KY's of the world say, let's just bank a scholarship or let's recruit a MAC player, so we do not upset someone? Heck, does X or Gonzaga even do that? We are on the edge of being a very good program. Being Top 10 requires only one thing, more better players.

Good point, except Archie has a history of banking scholarships. I guess you are saying he is wrong to do that.

He has a history of banking if he doesn't find a player worth the scholarship. He also has had a year where he over signed after the spring and needed a scholarship to open up.

Edit: I believe Archie has said numerous times, he doesn't plan on banking a scholarship, but he likes to save one for the spring for players like Kostas and transfer players.

You miss the point. As Eagle said, Archie will bank it if he cannot get a good player. I doubt he is saying at this point that he only wants one good player if he can get two. However, our problem right now is to get the next good player. Settling for Rogers or that little point guard from Oakland was not by design. It was from lack of recruiting a good high school senior.

Surely you would agree that UD Arena for a flyer basketball game is in the top ten college hoops crowds. I think that's a modest assessment because I think we're comfortably in the top 6 in the NCAA. Even being looked over because the small media market here no one could honestly leave dayton out of the top ten college hoops crowds.

Too bad. I know his family was pulling for Maryland and his HS coach for Notre Dame, but I was hoping his family would get to campus and see the academic presentation which has been a hit with many other parents. But if he knows he is not coming to Dayton at this point, it is more respectful to not waste Archie's time on a meaningless visit.

It seems like many think we will stand pat and use the scholarship on a transfer or a surprise that falls into our lap. We'll have an 11-man roster going into this season, and that's what we'd have next year if all our players stay, and our current commits end up coming.

D Davis, Landers and Mikesell - if a couple starters emerge out of this group this year, I feel good about next year. However if these 3 all look like subs, we really need another piece at wing for next year.

Archie had a great recruiting year with 4 players signed including Kostas. He identified talent (before the players blew up) going to Maryland/ND, NC, etc. In Archie I trust.

I agree. If they don't sign anyone else I will be happy. I think all of the guys have great upside. Of course another really good player would be awesome.

I believe Archie learned something from the Robinson/Scott ongoing show. He just isn't interested in problem children. I am willing to trust that he knows what he is doing (as 3 straight NCAA shows).

He wanted Morsell, it wasn't in the cards and you move on.

What I find strange is that the Morsell cancelled visit hasn't been reported more broadly.

The latest tweet was 5 hours ago;

Notre Dame Hoops ‏@NDHoopsRecruits 5h5 hours ago
MBB: After his Maryland Madness visit on Fri., Darryl Morsell told Maryland247 he'll take his Dayton OV this weekend, decide shortly after.

That doesn't mean it isn't true that he cancelled, but just seems odd that it hasn't been picked up more on Twitter. I am an optimist.

That doesn't mean it isn't true that he cancelled, but just seems odd that it hasn't been picked up more on Twitter. I am an optimist.
I was thinking the same thing. Approximately 24 hours into this reporting and no one else reporting on it. Could be true, but could also be total rumor. Time will tell. I hope he is still scheduled to come.

If we ever get in a situation like 2 years ago, when we were forced to give Bobby a scholarship and only have a 7 man rotation, I am sure Archie would love having another scholarship player instead of banking a scholarship.
To whoever red piped me for this and left the message "That "situation" led to two NCAA wins" you are missing my point. What I am saying is not taking away from that at all. What I am saying is only having 6-7 players is not want any coach wants and is not optimal. When you can't practice 5 on 5, that can be a problem. When you have to add managers to the roster just to have players to practice, that is a problem. The belief that Archie wouldn't want another scholarship player that year or if that situation happens again in the future is totally asinine.

And to counter your comment, did we win 2 NCAA games that year? Yes! Should it have been more had we not run out of gas from lack of depth and players? Absolutely! Think back to the Oklahoma game. If you don't think having an extra scholarship player that game could have helped kept guys more fresh and not turn our 12 point 2nd half lead into a six point loss then you are crazy.

As of Monday night the 17th, 247 has Morsell's Oct 22 OV still listed with Dayton and ND listed as warm and MD listed as warmer. I think they had UD as cool a week or so ago. None of the recruiting sites have any status change for UD. Still final 3 for Morsell.

Is it possible that someone would release that info just to watch the UD fans trash Morsell? Regardless of his decision it is nice to see that hasn't happened.

Hoping I'm wrong but sounds like a gentlemanly way to signal he's going in another direction. I'd imagine he'd want to otherwise again see his new home for the next 3-4 years if we were a serious option. At any rate would love to be proven wrong as my sense he is a very nice young man and a helluva ball player. I hope he makes the best decision for him.

Why would he still consider Dayton then? If he's down to two, then be down to two. I'd love to think of it instead that he doesn't need another visit to Dayton because he knows what it would be, so that's why they are still on his list. No idea, but would love to land him.

IMHO, he loves Archie and is keeping Dayton in final 3 not to disrespect Flyers. It is down to Maryland and ND.

When one person was reporting it, you had to wonder. Now that there are others i think we probably finished third. But there is a small possibility a scheduling conflict came up. If that's the case, AM will probably be doing a home visit any day now to close the deal. I do find it odd if it's down to two, he hasn't just announced a decision???

I agree with most that this doesn't look good if we ever want to see DM in a Dayton uniform. He did say he may reschedule...

Only thing we can hope for is that he will reschedule and is now coming for home opener November 11 or St Mary's November 19. Without doubt those visits would be more impactful than the R&B game if goal is to see arena, fans, etc.

So my guess is that his heart is saying Notre Dame, just by the way he talks about Brey, but the lure of the more local school is weighing on him. Glad we made his top 3 as you have to be in the game to win the game, but not optimistic we are actually still in the race.

Morsell is one heck of a player - the whole package at either of the guard positions. However, Archie has a way of turning spoiled grapes into fine champagne. Archie's judgement trumps Morsell's choice or any other player's choice for that matter.

TG,

Morsell was reportedly Archie's #1 target this recruiting cycle. Archie's choice. Morsell was Archie's Dom Perignon. Will have to settle for a Korbel or Andre @ $4-$6 a bottle.

Too bad we won't be getting the Dom Perignon but remember that Steph Curry was once considered Boones Farm or maybe worse

I had hoped to get 1 of the 3 minimum between Gaines, Williams and Morsell. Hopefully, someone blows up late that's unsigned. There will be plenty in the annual crop of transfers. Some may not like that route but if we can get another player or 2 of Cooke's (and what we think is Cunningham's) caliber, I would be just as happy.

I have no problem with being a destination place for quality players with the right attitude and aptitude. Knuckleheads need not apply.

Don't fret as Coach Miller knows he'll be able to pop that cork on the Ace of Spades soon enough.

Zach Kent update: He is visiting Northwestern on 10/21. Has Notthwestern and Tennessee as warm and Dayton as cool.

Daryl Morsell update: Maryland interest is warmer with Notre Dame and Dayton as warm. Last Friday, Maryland had its Maryland Madness event where the public could meet the new players. This Saturday, Maryland basketball has an open practice prior to the Maryland versus Michigan State football game. Fans can watch the open practice and then go watch the football game.

Isaac Kante update: No news.

The maryland open practice explains morsell cancelling his ud visit. If he wasn't seriously considering ud it is best not to waste everyone's time.

UDBrian, 247sports has had Daryl Morsell crystal ball prediction at 100 percent for Maryland for many weeks.

In the Daryl Morsell case, its like saying that Maryland is the nominee and Notre Dame and Dayton are candidates. The English language provides us with some subtle clues.
