Smile WSOC: Winning Streak at Four as UD tops Davidson 4-1

The Dayton Flyers ran their winning streak to four matches with a 4-1 victory over the Davidson Wildcats Thursday evening at Baujan Field. After falling behind 1-0, UD rebounded with three first half goals and another after intermission to avoid trouble. UD maintains their undefeated conference record (3-0-0) and first place in the A10 standings while improving to 5-7-0 overall. Davidson falls to 4-8-0 and remains winless in the A10 at 0-3-0.

Davidson didn't waste any time putting the Flyers in a trouble spot, scoring in the 3rd minute on a 30yd blast that caught Flyer GK Kaelyn Johns off guard while defending in transition. The Wildcats -- not expected to challenge for anything in the A10 race -- suddenly had thoughts of an upset.

The Flyers maintained their composure however and never let the 1-0 deficit rattle their confidence. It took just three minutes to tie the score at 1-1 when Nicole Waters cleaned things up in the goal box with a low ball to the post that beat the diving mitts of the Davidson goalkeeper.

From there, UD dominated the run of play and most of the energetic but sparse crowd could sense that more goals were eminent. Much of the confidence came from Dayton's ability to link passes together and get forward into free space in the offensive third. Davidson had trouble staying compact and shutting down UD's forward push. The offensive pressure being applied eventually led to a slew of Dayton corner kicks and other dangerous balls inside the Wildcat goal box.

Davidson tried to counter, but most of their chances came at the expense of loose Flyer passing in the defensive third rather than dynamic playmaking from their own talent.

Dayton answered again in the 25th minute when Nicole Waters slotted a perfect through-ball to fellow Canadian Ashley Campbell for the easy corner pocket shot to the weak post to put UD up 2-1 and in the driver's seat for good.

The next 15 minutes of the first half lacked a bit of purpose as the Flyers had difficulty making clean touches of the ball or passing quickly to teammates demanding service from dangerous spots of the field. Still, Davidson remained largely overmatched. Another first half Dayton goal would take some of the heat off of the second half and crush Davidson's spirits heading into halftime.

That's exactly what the Flyers accomplished as Sidney Leroy side-swiped a half-chance from the right side of the goal box and chipped the goalkeeper to the far post to give UD the commanding 3-1 lead in the 44th minute. Up two goals, the tally effectively stuck a dagger into Davidson's heart and put the match away for good.

First half stats were dominated by Dayton with an 11-2 advantage in shots and 8-0 shutout corner kicks.

The first 20 minutes of the second half lacked some of the energy of the first half. To Davidson's credit, they never quit and actually dominated the run of play for small stretches. UD looked most vulnerable for a 10 minute stretch when the Flyers struggled to clear away balls in the box and play out of the back line. Hospital balls and a few apathetic 50/50 challenges allowed the Wildcats to threaten Dayton just enough to put a bit of a scare into the second half.

Davidson's best scoring chance came on a cross in the box from the left side that UD failed to clear on two opportunities. The ball squibbed to the far right side and only a friendly bounce off the crossbar kept the subsequent Davidson shot from finding the back of the net.

The Flyers regrouped over the next 10 minutes however and turned things around. The Wildcats never seriously threatened thereafter and UD added a well-crafted insurance goal in the 69th minute when Lesley Chilton jump-started a counterattack with a no-look dish to her left, hitting Alexis Kiehl unmarked and in stride. Kiehl got behind the last defender and beat the goalkeeper to put the Flyers up 4-1 and round out the scoring.

UD continued to earn a handful of corner kicks and other set-piece opportunities over the final 20 minutes and probably deserved a couple more goals for their hard work.

Final match stats were dominated by the Flyers with a shot difference o 25-8 -- including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 13-1.

Chilton provided a big lift off the bench, especially in the second half. Her forward push in the offense opened up the field with quality passing, while Leroy's workman-like effort in the first half scraped and clawed enough possession as a target forward to give UD the scoring chances they needed.

Dayton remains a serious work-in-progress on defense however and once again squandered a great opportunity at a shutout -- something UD has earned only once all season. It's been a different reason every game and UD must tighten up all over the field with better marking and shape to hold the score down against the top teams in the league.

The Flyers hit the road for a Sunday match at VCU, followed by a match at LaSalle on October 15th.
