2017 Schedule Speculation
It's the off-season, so what else are we going to talk about until spring matches begin?
I'll start with BIG10 teams. In 2012' Illinois came to UD the first weekend. it's the last time we played them. It may not have been a home-away contr t, but I'm hoping it was. They will have a new coach, which might impact the schedule, but would think most of their schedule is done for 2017. I hope we are on it.
Northwestern visited last year. We probably go there in 17 or 18.
Indiana - assistant coach is Jason Oliver, former Horsmon assistant at both UD and Maryland. I would guess they make our schedule sometime in the next 3 years.
Michigan - they played at UD last spring. We travel to Ann Arbor this spring for a closed scrimmage March 25. I would love to see them during the regular season sometime (twice) in the next 3 years.
Penn State - just hire one of their alums as an assistant coach. I know there were talks a couple years back, but it never worked out. We've been there the last 3 years for NCAAs. Would love to see them in regular season twice in the next 3 years. I'd even take them at PSU one year only. We need to be challenged early.
Purdue - haven't played them in several years. Saw them in both the THI era and during Sheffield years. Time to get them back in the mix.
Michgan St - first TH NCAA year was at MI St and we upset them in the first round.
Ohio State - why not? Funny it never seems to happen.
Big 12
Iowa State - played in Ames in 2015. Time for them to travel to Dayton?
Baylor - played in Dayton in 2015. Time to travel to Texas?
West Coast - Pepperdine came to UD in 2012. CSU Bakersfield came in 2014. With the ILL coach going to the Farm, they might be in the mix in the next 3 years. Oregon also might look to UD.
WKY - UD traveled there in 15.
TN & Louisville - they have had a couple down years, so they might be looking for a likely 2017 Top 20 team. Dayton fits that model - for a two year contract. Notre Dame is making its way back into the national discussion since they hired the Washington coach a couple years back. They also fit the looking for a probable Top 20 team model. CO is also looking to upgrade their program in the tough PAC 10. Dayton would be very attractive to them.
Texas & Wichita St - I'd take either of these teams in a pre-conference tourney anytime I could get them. Totally different reason to add them to the schedule, but either would be great.
I don't think NE is in the mix. We had a 3 year run with them and I'd say we are in a 3-4 year off-cycle.

I went to add Loyola Marymount to this list and I couldn't find it. But I had to leave so couldn't look for it. Thanks so much for cleaning it up. I have no idea what I did where. I stopped drinking coffe about a week ago. One has to wonder what else I've done and have no clue it's a mess. LOL

There is a thread on volleytalk.com regarding graduation losses for 2017.
http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thre...ost-graduation
The gist is that since we lose so little statistically - only Giardina - we should be a non power-5 conference RPI dream team to schedule for just about everybody. Coming off the best record in the country and losing very little to graduation portends well for next year.
Yes, last year was a cream puff non-con schedule. This year I expect the schedule to be dramatically different - almost a play anybody anywhere year. I don't expect our record to be as good as this past year, but I do expect to make the big dance and would be mildly disappointed if we don't make a serious run at the second weekend of the tournament - assuming we get a reasonably favorable draw into the bracket (i.e. not PSU again). Could we be top 16 and host? Really really tough to get there from outside a power conference - but we have shown it can be done. That is how you avoid PSU in the first weekend.

I agree with all of this. I just renewed my rich kern subscription this afternoon but it takes a couple hours for them to process the credit card. Rich puts this graduation loss info together. Dayton should be very attractive to the top teams to schedule the next couple years. Let's hope it happens.

I did a quick run down of the graduation loss spreadsheet on Rich Kern. I'll look at it in more detail later. A couple teams jumped out at me. Butler doesn't loose anything next year and we play them on March 18 as part of the Spring schedule. I like that.
Fordham loses very little. Good for the a10. Penn State loses very little. Their down years are Top 15 instead of Top 3.
