Live from Erie--It's Jordan Sibert

ERIE (PA) – “From the Swamp” is coming to you this evening from the cozy confines of the Erie Insurance Arena in downtown Erie, PA -- home court of the hometown BayHawks. We’re here for the NBA D-League game between the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Orlando Magic affiliate BayHawks, featuring recent University of Dayton grad Jordan Sibert.

This will be Erie’s third game thus far in the young NBA D-League season. Jordan scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting in his very first tilt a week ago vs. Westchester; last night he got a DNP for the home opener in an Erie loss against Delaware due to a death in the family. But JS is active tonight, so I’m glad to be here for this game instead of the one yesterday.

There are several semi-familiar names on the 12 man BayHawks roster

And a few for Sioux Falls as well, including OSU 7 footer Byron Mullens:

And yes, just in case you were wondering, Jordan still has that sweet form on his jumper that we have all come to know, love and win ballgames. Warmups for the BayHawks are still very hands-on with the assistant coaches putting their squad thru various shooting drills, first with the backcourt and then the bigs. The training staff is equally busy making sure all the guys are properly stretched. The fact that this is only the third run of the regular season for the Hawks and everyone is still getting used to each other has a lot to do with this.

All NBA D-League games are available on YouTube, so you can see where I screwed up by watching the replay here. Jordan is #18 in white:

The Erie starting five consists of Keith Appling (MSU), Tyler Harvey (Eastern Washington), Melvin Ejim (Iowa State), Daniel Coursey (Mercer) and Nnanna Egwu (Illinois). The BayHawks 7’5” Samuel Deguara is inactive and they could sure use his size as SF jumps out to a 8-0 lead and it takes Erie almost 4 minutes to get on the board. The BayHawks then go on a run and tie it up at 10.

Jordan checks in with 6:00 to go in the first period with the score 11-10 Skyforce. He’s defending DeAndre Liggins who has a few inches on JS. On the scoreboard during a TO players were asked if they would survive in “The Hunger Games” and Jordan said “Yes” but I couldn’t hear the rest of his reply over the crowd screaming for t-shirts. Sibert was set to launch a three when teammate Derrick Caracter got called for an offensive foul. We will never know if it would have gone in. The first frame ends with Erie down 25-20.
Sibert is out there for the start of the second and exits at the 9:30 mark. On the bench, he is the first guy up to greet his teammates during a TO. Why am I not surprised? Jordan returns at the 4:45 juncture and gets rocked by former OSU mate Mullins battling for a loose ball. He checks out with 2:00 to go in the half. Thus far he is 0-3 from the floor with one rebound and two personal fouls. At halftime the BayHawks trail the Skyforce 45-38.

Jordan, Caracter and Kobongo are all back in at the 7:48 mark of the third. JS forces a turnover with some good D. He then drains a three with the shot clock running down. Shortly thereafter, Jordan drives to the hole for the hoop and the harm. The made FT means he has tallied six straight markers for the Hawks, who trail 58-51. Sibert then hit from the baseline on a nice feed. Having scored eight points in less than six minutes, he is clearly feeling it now. His fine play keeps him on the floor for the remainder of the quarter and the start of the fourth, as Sioux Falls leads by 11.

Jordan spends most of his time early in the fourth passing to teammates who keep missing three pointers. He has an ugly sequence where he turns the ball over and then commits his third PF, as Erie is starting to fade. He checks out at the 7:26 mark but comes back after only a 1:15 blow. In case you ever wondered, JS likes to sing “Roar” by Katy Perry in the shower.

Erie goes into a press with four minutes remaining but when you are down by almost twenty, it’s kinda hard to catch up. Jordan does his part by splashing a pair of treys, but it’s not nearly enuf. Your final:

Sioux Falls 98
Erie 82

Jordan finished with 14 points on 5-11 shooting (3-5 from three), 1-1 FTs, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 PF in almost 30 minutes of burn.

After the game Sibert mentioned that he had been away due to the death of his uncle and hadn’t practiced in a few days, but it sure didn’t show. Jordan wasn’t able to follow today’s Flyer win over William & Mary and he was glad to hear that the Red & Blue pulled out the W. He said he did get to watch the Alabama game and that he texts with his former UD teammates all the time, including Dyshawn Pierre who is working hard and looking forward to coming back. When asked what the Orlando Magic coaches told him that he needed to work on while in Erie he listed three things: become even more of a knockdown shooter; handle the ball more (even logging time at PG) and finally to play tough D. I alluded to the fact that he covered the taller DeAndre Liggins for most of the game and he said he was assigned to bigger guys like Gerald Green and Justice Winslow in the pre-season with Orlando and didn’t have any problems. Finally, JS cited the pace of the game as the biggest difference between college and the pros. He said Coach Bill Peterson told the Erie team tonight “You can tell right away which guys who have played in The League (NBA) before -- they know what they are doing out there.”

Hopefully, Flyer Fans will be able to say that about Jordan Sibert soon.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
