Elsewhere in the A10 (2017 edition)

Don't know where to post this because bigsoccer.com doesn't care even a little about our conference nor does allwhitekit. I'll try to post weekly snapshots and highlights.
  • GW got blindsided last night by an upstart George Mason team in a 4-3 slugfest.
  • Fordham beat Rhody in 2OT on a Blocked PK that ended up back in the goal which is so tough for that poor goalie who only did what she needed to and still lost. See Fordham soccer's twitter for the instant replay. I was amazed to see Fordham had 11 off sides calls against them in 106 minutes. How does that even happen without making some adjustment?
  • La Salle beat up on Duquesne, 3-0. La Salle has six wins on the season and all of them are shutouts.
  • SLU trounced Bonnies, 5-0 with four first half goals. Their tweet indicated that they reached their 18th different scoring combination on 21 assisted goals this season. SLU remains unbeaten and my de facto favorite in the conference, better on both sides of the ball than any other conference team.
  • UMass over Davidson, 3-1. Three of the goals in this game came in the final ten minutes.
  • Richmond is still without a win, as St Joe's handed them their 8th straight loss of the season, 2-0. Incredible how far they have fallen off in competitiveness, though SJU is certainly a worthy opponent.

IMHOP- The Richmond fall off (they were pretty good a few years ago) correlates to the dismantling of the men's program. Soccer just isn't a priority at Richmond anymore. More emphasis being placed on LAX is my guess.

y- Clinched playoff berth

There are six spots remaining in the tournament as first two slots have been locked up. St L just needs a point over its final three games to get to the magic number (17 pts).

St Joe's owns the tiebreaker over UD and can't be caught unless they foul it up. Plus, SJU's remaining sched is a cakewalk compared to UD's. I wanna think Dayton can still take UMass' bid because there is a match against them, but unfortunately that's on the road. UMass has a much more difficult schedule remaining. The season could all come in to Dayton vs UMass for a play-in game, at Amherst. In that scenario, there are no winners, because the 8 seed goes back to Philadelphia for another elimination game, most likely, and who wants to lose (again) to the best La Salle team in years?

Currently it looks like a La Salle v St Louis final with St Joe's, VCU or Duquesne playing the roles of potential spoilers. St Louis is marginal for an at large bid if they lose to La Salle in the finals. There is a bit of good news: Fordham and Richmond seem to pose less threat to steal a bid than in years past, so a late bid could still be Dayton's for the taking. The bad news is Dayton appears to be on track to finish sub .500 in the league.

All the teams followed chalk today except UMass over Duquesne! This will make "the field" harder to catch! Dayton is not yet done! UMass has a harder path to the cup.

Edited to add: I've now determined SJU can't finish 8th. They have tiebreakers over George Mason, Dayton, and UMass. Still to be determined: the SJU/GW tiebreak, if necessary, based on goal differential. Might as well draw straws.

That means the UMass - Dayton match really is a play-in to see who goes to Philadelphia. A tie would go to UMass, advantage regular season record.

We're effectively in the A10 Tourney right now. UMass is a 1st round game. Unfortunately 8th place would play 1st place LaSalle at LaSalle in the official A10 initial round on their fieldturf. Which means if thats UD, the game automatically starts UD down 1-0. But cant worry about that right now. Just need to beat UMass which wont be easy. They just beat Duquesne and Duquesne thoroughly outplayed us. And while we won 5-1 last night vs UMass, we were very sloppy other than finishing some chances vs a terrible goalkeeper. There isnt a team in the league that surrenders more unforced possession away than the Flyers and thats what greatly concerns me -- even vs UMass.

Not having Johns in goal is all the more problematic. Looks like nothing was broken, but significant knee contusion. No plates needed this time!

Agreed, it's a rare elimination game for the Flyers/Minutewomen, so it needs to be treated like a playoff game.

Knowing that a La Salle rematch awaits the winner ought to motivate both sides that had lost by 4 to the Explorers in the regular season.

As for the turf providing a one goal disadvantage, it can work both ways. The championships that were won by UD, buy how many of these were at Baujan?

We're all disappointed that the preseason selection of the Flyers did not pan out to anything even close to a top four bid. The importance of home field advantage can not be understated.

I think it's good for the league though, for many reasons. There is a side benefit for attendance. A Dayton-La Salle match-up would get more eyeballs in Philly than in Richmond, for sure.

Also we all must remember, that sending 8 seed VCU to their home grass to play #1 Dayton just a few years ago resulted in a 5-4 match, in 2013. That game should have been in Dayton, to be fair to the regular season champions. And in just about any conference in America it would have been held at the top seed instead of at the low seed, even though by coincidental circumstances it was totally unfair. That match no doubt took some steam out of those Flyers, who survived the brink of elimination, then went on to lose in PK's later in the tournament.
