A Flyer Tripleheader

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) – It’s not every day that the Flyer Faithful has not one, not two but three basketball games in which they have a legitimate rooting interest occur on the same evening. UD faced the homestanding Rockets in the opening round of the NIT just up I-75 in Toledo; Obi Toppin and the NYK played Portland in MSG and the Dayton women’s team squared off vs. DePaul in Iowa in the First Four of their NCAA Tournament. UD fans got a triple treat and all three of the performances were impressive.

UD vs. Toledo

DaRon Holmes led the way with 20 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes and 2 blocks. Koby Brea had a 13 and 10 double double, but hats off to Kobe Elvis for a much needed stat line of 11 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and only 1 TO running the point in place of the injured Malachi Smith. Dayton garnered a convincing 74-55 win, in which they scored 52 points in the paint.

Once again, the defense was UD’s calling card as the Flyers held the Rockets’ leading point getter JT Shumate scoreless.

Here are the extended highlights:

Kudos to AG for finding a way to supplement the play of his starters by utilizing Big Mou, seldom used wing Kaleb Washington and even walk-on PG Christian Wilson.

What doesn’t show up on the stat sheet is the fire and determination that the Flyers and their coach displayed right out of the chute to silence the Rockets’ home crowd. As always, the Flyer Faithful traveled well and were loud and proud all night. The Red and Blue erased any doubt that the team would suffer a hangover from being the “Last Team Out” in the Big Dance Bracket.

There has been a lot of chatter on the UDPride MB about potential transfers after the season. One guy you can scratch off that list is freshman Kaleb Washington, thanks to this interesting tidbit from Jablo on Twitter:

I talked to Kaleb Washington, who got his first meaningful playing time of the season, after the game about how he has developed this season and asked him about his future at Dayton. "I want to stay," he said.

Later, in an exchange with Brooks Hall, Jablo explained how the subject came up:

C’mon Jablo, you didn’t really put him on the spot like that did you??

Nah, not really, we were just talking about next season and I asked him about his future. I didn't ask him if he was staying or leaving.

Top 100 recruits don’t grow on trees. Glad to hear the young man from Georgia plans to return next season.

UD travels to Nashville to face Rodney Chatman and the Vanderbilt Commodores at 3:00 pm EST on ESPN2.

NYK vs. Portland

While not a Dayton game per se, Obi-only NYK fans like “FTS” consider the start of the 2nd and 4th quarters of any Knicks game to be appointment viewing, as that’s when #1 gets his chance to shine. The day did not start off well, as Knicks management indicated that they intend to retain Tom Thibodeau as their coach next year. In spite of that setback, Toppin scored 13 points in 14 minutes in a New York win.

Dayton vs. DePaul

The UD women saved the best for last, as they absolutely blitzed DePaul by a tally of 88-57. The ladies were raining threes on the Blue Demons all evening and when they weren’t doing that they were blocking DePaul’s shots on the other end. 13 made threes and 13 swatted shot attempts. UD hit 13 of 23 from the land of plenty, led by Erin Whalen with 28 points and Jenna Giacone with 21.

Dayton will now face Georgia on Friday in Ames at 7:30 pm EST on ESPN News.
