Western Illinois Game Thread
Who's ready for the season opener on Saturday at 2 PM?! Can't Wait!
Projected Western Illinois Starting Lineup:
G 24 Remy Roberts-Burnett 6'0" 180 FR
G 14 Billy Molinari 6'2" 190 SO
G 3 Tommie Tyler 6'3" 190 SR
F 32 Jack Houpt 6'7" 210 JR
F 43 Terell Parks 6'7" 215 JR
Starting PG Ceola Clark III did not play yesterday in their only exhibition game last night... People are unsure if he will play on Saturday... He is by far their best player

My guess is the same as the first 2 exhibition games... Dillard, Parker, CJ, Benson, Kav

I never want to demean an opponent, but this struck me as a bit off the wall;
"The Western Illinois men's basketball squad defeated the Illinois College Blueboys in an exhibition game Wednesday evening (Nov. 9) at Waste Management Court in Western Hall..."
I'm just wondering how a school can decide to call it's team the "Blueboys", and call their fieldhouse "Waste Management Court"?
Anyway, one fact does stand out - UD is 0-2 against Western Illinois all-time.
Time to break the seal and make it 1-2 right now!

Bummer but not surprising... Larry is with the football team so, as a result, we are going to have to listen to the great voice of Tom Michaels and Bucky
Get back soon Larry lol

Pack it in and make them prove they can shoot. So far they're getting easy shots a point blank. Those are not difficult to make.

This defense is an absolute joke.
Kavs has made some nice passes.
Luke does not know how to set a legal screen. I've seen a few moving screens called on him so far in the 1st three games. In this offense, legal screens are a must.
Did I mention what a joke of a defense this is?

The difference is in years past there was help defense, forcing the driver to kick the ball out. So far this game, they have a clear path to the rim.

I know its just western illinois ... however it's amazing how much better they look on offense. Much better flow and they're getting good shots. Not hitting well from outside but that's ok as long as you don't fall in love with it.

Agree. It certainly looks like the point of emphasis during the pre season was offense. We have to get this defense shored up however.

Glad to see the season start and to be able to enjoy the Flyers.
Good to finish the half with a lead, even if just 3 pts. Western Ill is shooting strong, and doubt that they will continue (at least I hope they won't). Also, pleased to see Kavs playing stronger. Defense is weak, but may be the result of first real game stiffness. Any way, great to be able to follow the game and read the comments here again.

Kav kept us in this offensively and rebounding. I wish he could jump a little. His defensive presence to the dribble drivers is zero. Nice halves by Johnson and Parker and Benson, but zero from Dillard. Paul Williams must have stayed in Michigan for the Fall. Has a kid improved less since his Soph year?

They're hitting everything because the Flyers aren't stopping the penetration and they're shooting from 10 feet or less. Must stop the penetration and the guys will open this game up.

I can't believe we don't get to see the Red Panda halftime show. Sounds like the fans are enjoying it.....
Way to go Kavs. He looks like the player that delivered a W on the road vs. Seton Hall, only to be banisded to BG's dog pound for the rest of the year.

It's all about effort. The guys have to give more effort on that side of the ball. With our lack of depth, I'm not sure it will get much better as the game goes on. I really hope I'm wrong.

At least the defensive effort looks to be there in the 2nd half. It looks like Archie got on them at halftime.

Playuing with more urgency. wanna see Dillard assert himself more.
Parker needs to learn to step in 3 feet and take the 16 footer versus the 19 footer.
look crisper and more focused on D

Arch seems to be pretty effective with his timeouts. We'll see if he gets it corrected coming out of this TO.

I would like to see some set plays to get CJ more involved in the offense. We need for him to get going to have any chance of being successful

Flyers went from looking scared and unconfident on offense to mentally tough, patient and confident on that end of the court. Need to seal up the D and boards but I really like HOW they're playing.

i know this is Western Ill, however it seems safe to say we are a 75 and up point team. much different compared to fighting to hit 65 points a game the past 8 years.
i mean this half we are on all cylinders, so gonna be 85 or so likely.
nice to see Kavs. We just have so many options on Offense now.
wow

How many assists does Dillard have now? I think he has 0 turnovers. He isn't scoring all that much, but he's taken over the last 5 minutes.

CW would have thrived in this offense. So much motion and off ball movement, no need to force a bad move down the middle of the lane. Just work the ball and get a good cut to the basket and bam!

For everybody who talked smack about our bids this year, benson and kavs combine for 28 with 8 minutes left in the game..., and the most foul happy player on the team, kavs, only has one

Team chemistry and offense are much better than last year.
Defense not quite as good as last year.
I would love to see steady improvement on the defensive side of the ball. If we become a good defensive team, we can compete with the top tier teams in the A10

might be best commment on this thread.
question is will this Kavs/Johnson, and rest of team rebounding be enough this year. And can Gavs, Kavs, and company be tough enough inside all year? We know that today isn't a true enough test.

Different game during the second half and the second half gives a reason to be optimistic. Miami will be a test, but it is great to start the season and Miller's UD career with a win.

Kinda funny that Archie said before the game that he thought we had a good perimeter game but didn't know how good the bigs will be. I think Kavs and JB are our two best players today. Would be great if they keep it up.

WIU held to 20 pts in the 2nd half. I didn't see UD do anything different on defense in the 2nd half but pick up their intensity. That tells me this team can play defense when they want to. That along with rebounding will be the key to season.
Props to Archie and the coaching staff for apparently getting on the team at half regarding the defensive effort. I didn't really see any in game adjustments other than effort.
Kavs deserved the player of the game. Benson had a really good game too, but many of those points were from great passes from Dillard and others.
Dillard had a really good 2nd half, even not scoring much. He controlled the game like a good pg is supposed to do. It's very nice to have a quality pg who can shoot and be unselfish. You can tell the guys love playing with this pg.
This season is going to be interesting.

I have to believe that the fact that these players aren't looking over their backs anticipating the hook has helped immensely.

Johnson with 10 rebounds. Dillard with 9 assists and no turnovers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in about one half. May end up as our best point in like forever.

Turned out that there were 12,454 attending. I was there and the student section was full. Pretty good turn out although there were some empty seats.
Paul Williams came through in the second half - 15 points.
Dayton may surprise this year.

Dillard and others were making great passes, but I was really impressed with how well benson got himself in great position and open to receive the pass and would finish strong to the hoop. Sorry, kav had a great game yes, but benson kept us in the game for a stretch in the first, and made some amazing moves with and without the ball, and played some great defense.to me it's a no brainer to call him p.o.g.

Josh B has always had the skills, just not the right amt of opportunities and wrong offense for him.
Does anyone else like what we got from Parker. couple of bad three attempts early but he's a sparkplug.
Dillard is the real deal, and im sure could have scored more when we need him to.
One of the keys to our season is also Paul Williams. If the guy can play steady and come up with big plays and our bigs play solid, we will be in good shape come March

When the rest of the team is scoring the pg doesn't have to score but when they do have trouble, it is good to know we have one that can get his own shot and make them.

Amazing offensive start. Kavs, no turnovers? Great sharing of the ball. Healthy assists/shots made. Low team turnovers while scoring in the high 80's. An excellent start against a team that won't go anywhere, but still a good test. Lots to work on this week in practice.

This offense is much better suited to benson and kavs. If Josh gets half a step on the defender there aren't many times that he will be stopped. We are going to need quite a few points to win twenty or more games but it could happen.
This schedule is good for a team with a new identity, we will have the chance to grow and still win quite a few games.

I think Benson being so wide open around the basket is a credit to the half-cour offense Archie has them running. When the game was tight in the late first half, it was Kav's energy and hustle that sparked this team.
Benson played very well too, but I want to see more rebounds out of him. 4 isn't sufficient imo.
