South Carolina game thread

A couple of observations about South Carolina. Dawn Staley has openly ripped her team regarding rebounding then I look at the stats which say through six games they have been out rebounded by a total of nine. The key here could be limiting turnovers (I guess that's the key in every game though) because USC forces 22 of them a game. Te'a Cooper is a junior guard and the only one in double figures at about 17 ppg. They lost to Maryland with the other losses to Oregon St. and recently Drake in overtime.

That would be nice it would also temporarily eliminate some of the "we have no point guard", "we are terrible" "we will end up under .500" "we should not play Lauren" stuff that gets under my skin.

Made me think of a tweet UDPride sent out a couple weeks ago:

https://twitter.com/UDPride/status/1058084668778655744

ND WBB HC McGraw postgame presser. Preseason ranked #1, won 107-65 in exhibition. Her first remarks are "We have no desire to defend. We are capable but unwilling. Its a huge problem and I imagine we'll get beat a bunch." Athletes will chase the height of the bar coaches set.

We’ll I just feel awful for you.

But no one said don’t play Lauren, they said play her less. This might be sage advice, particularly when she’s clearly overmatched and missing ALL her shots. She’s only a spot up shooter, and is often a good one but needs to play her role, she has few other skills.

And so far we look terrible. 12 points-TWELVE— in the second half of our last game. If we are going to lose might as well play with effort and bench those who are only here for the unlimited buffet!

Perhaps some are content to simply compete in the mediocre A10- but Dayton has/had? the ability and resources to do more. So far this year is very disappointing.

I just watched some of the gals highlights on YouTube, and from that limited recording, it sure looks like this team has talent. It appears to me the challenge of living without several outstanding grads, plus a pretty aggressive ooc schedule, has shocked this team. We throw down 68 points in regulation against Northeastern and 71 against ranked Maryland, and 70 against Toledo---that should be enough to win. But not when you give up 16 in overtime.

So which game is the anomaly, Maryland, Northeastern, Toledo or Green Bay?

Something happened that severely damaged our mojo leading up to the Green Bay game.
And it's going to take some soul searching and a few wins to bring us back up.

And then here comes South Carolina. wow. As I look at the rest of the ooc schedule, we are going to be happy to see the A10 start.

Up 16 to 13 end of 1st quarter.

Played horribly that last 4 minutes.

Tied at 30 at the half. Hanging with them.

Out rebounding them, but a lot of fouls on us and not so on them.

Great half. I’m headed to the kitchen to eat some crow. Best half of the year, led by two transfers.

Horrible stretch of basketball in the last 4 minutes. Officiating was questionable, but we took some ridiculously bad shots. Again guards not penetrating and kicking back out to the wings...it is driving me crazy.

I thought all in all, we played a good team fairly well for most of the game.

Regroup and beat James Madison.

Go Flyers!

Agree. 26 fouls shots to just 8 for the Flyers. Fouled way too much in the 4th qtr and could not get shots off -- many blocked or turnovers. USC basically woke up from the slumber and played Gamecock basketball in the 4th. A good 3qtrs out of it against a far more talented team -- though from what I saw USC is not Final 4 material this year. Before the season started this was penciled in as a loss so no ground conceded here. Only the Northeastern game thus far has been one we should have won but didnt.

Still need better PG play. Our guards are unable to create their own offense unlike Burdette. Cannatelli cant do it. The only one is Scaife.

I will say the 4th qtr foul call on Maddy Dennis for that pick was one of the worst officiating calls I have ever seen in womens basketball. She was set and steady for a good three seconds and flattened the girl. Didnt throw a shoulder or arm. Just held her ground. Wasnt flagrant, wasnt even a moving screen. How an official could have called that a foul on Dennis is beyond explanation.

South Carolina wins 65-55. Sigh.... Seems like this game was there for the taking - only down 2 in the middle of the 4th quarter.

We do not score for the last 4:39 and only score 4 points for the whole 4th quarter! This scoring drought happened in the last game. Are we not in shape? Geesh.

Chandler scores 15 before fouling out. Cannatelli shoots 3-10. Scaife shoots 3-13. We get out-blocked 7-0. We were called for 23 fouls to their 11.

Looking at the stats - How did we keep it so close for so long?

Couldn't watch the game, but one of the things that stands out is our 3pt shots were 8-17 and theirs were 3-12. That's 15 points right there, partially making up for the free throw difference of -9. But then they made 20 2 pointers while we made 12. They outrebounded us by 41-30.

All in all a good showing - too bad things went south in the last 4 minutes. This was a lot closer than a 10 point loss.

I think one reason it was closer despite the stats was USC only had 3 assists all game. They mostly went 1v1 and did not move the ball well. Maybe it was our D, maybe it was USC just being inept. Maybe some of both.

We only gave up 65pts so its not like they ran us out of the gym. We were far more overwhelmed by Green Bay. The N'Eastern loss is the only one Im still miffed around. Maryland can reach a legit Final-4 this year. Green Bay and USC are legit Sweet-16 clubs. N'Eastern did beat Fordham (who just beat Washington) so they are not chopped liver either. But that was a home game and we have to win that one.

Big time

....attendance over 10,000. As I recall USC leads the nations in women's BB attendance.

Good showing. Vastly better than #16 Depaul's at UConn tonight. DU was down by 30 at the half during which UConn went on a 24 point run.

Go Flyers!...a good big time experience.

When I was watching it behind the announcers it looked like a few hundred. So it is all about the angle you have.

I agree with Chris on the Northeastern game. It still sticks out as one we let get away. They were well coached though and did not turn it over. We tried to run and they stayed with us. I do think they are going to be better than they have been in the past. So hopefully for us they keep winning and that loss will not hurt us later come tournament time.

I also agree with what Chris said earlier about the Dennis call...it was ridiculous. The officiating is not why we lost, but it did hamper our ability to do some things. The foul on Chandler (her 5th) was ticky tack at best. We come back down the floor, and our player drives, gets elbowed away, loses her balance and the ball and no foul. I have never understood why officials feel the need to interject themselves into games? Too many rules at some point leads to inconsistent and crappy officials. Let them play or call everything, can't have it both ways.

The officiating in college football has gotten way worse than it was when I was younger. Watching the officials at UD's home and away games, seen some pretty bad calls.

Off my soapbox...I believe we can beat James Madison.

Go Flyers!

It was like two different games last night. We played with them and outrebounded them in the first half, but the second half, and especially the 4th quarter, USC's athleticism took over and we reverted back to our previous game errors of lack of people and ball movement, forced shots and terrible rebounding. Our bigs beyond Chandler and Whitehead are giving us close to nothing.

This team made some great strides last night.

I didn't watch but listened to Alex instead. For long stretches while in the game I didn't hear Jayla's name mentioned, if anyone can answer this, what sort of defense was on her that made her a non factor because she is the key to this team for success especially against this level of competition.

I think by the way that Lauren is now three points shy of 1,000 for her career and I do NOT want her to get it at home against Buffalo.

What is disconcerting to me is this team went to Italy playing with a lot of grit winning 3 games against tough competition. That bold well for coming season. Fast forward, little rusty against Colgate an losing expectedly against Maryland. Got out of the gate on wrong foot losing 28 -11 is quarter. Team did rebound not sure against UM is string or bench, important thing they didn't quit.
Northeastern is another animal. Work our way back to tie at regulation. In OT is our starters against their bench, ouch.
While Lauren is 3 pts away from 1000 got to remember she did so with outstanding guards. They graduated an we now get what you see. Either Lauren needs to work herself open or the guards need to find her. Neither are consistently on same page right now. Laurens shooting percentage would be alot better if she'd stop penetating. It's not in her DNA.
Jayla also had to learn to work with new guards but at least she can create her own shot. Just didn't fall for her last night. As for Fowler and Bradshaw these are seasoned guards who should be ready to go. Not freshmen learning D1 ball, they learned that already.
Last night we exorcised one demon that being coming out the gate in the first quarter. Now to exorcize the end of game demon.
It doesn't excite me to hear we may have a winning season cause we'll dominate a weak A10. Have to learn to start strong and finish string against the type of competition we'll face in NCAA.
I see promise, but this is Shauna 3rd season and most are her recruits. She already burnt Skeens and Davidson redshirt so play them. Doubt they'd be a detriment to teams progress

It seemed like Jayla has some tough defense on her. USC knew we had one good player. Jayla got very few decent shots. Athletically USC had players better than our players, who turned it on when they had to, and against Jayla.

I am not a big fan of their coach, who has great talent, but sort of rolls the ball out their and lets them do their thing. USC had 3 assists on 23 baskets.
