Polls Monday Jan 14
Surprisingly, Mississippi State is still ranked (24, 23) after back to back losses - so the Flyers still have four opponents in the top 25.
A real head-scratcher: Furman - currently in fourth place in the Southern Conference - with 5 votes in the Coaches poll (good for 35th best team in the country)

These pollsters have their noses so far up the rectums of Duke and NC. It is sickening to any team that has to earn its stripes.

You're lamenting that they didn't move up because they played a good opponent (and we know they're good because they beat UNC)?

How could they?

How could an A10 team get a single vote? Their obviously all trash and terribly low end teams.
Okay I don't actually share that sentiment, and I am certain that Coach Grant doesn't like or share that perspective. I would imagine he is tired of hearing this bologna.
That's not aimed at anyone in this thread. But the A10 is trash sentiment doesn't say much positive about the UD Program. The fact that the A10 may be having its worst year ever, doesn't equal 14 trash level pushovers; but rather it is testament to how good and nationally competitive this conference has been the past 25 years.
Bad non-conference season yes; a group nightly pushovers, absolutely not!

I'm a little surprised that SLU isn't getting ANY votes. And I suspect had VCU held on @Davidson over the weekend, they would be getting some votes.

You wouldn’t be if you saw them vs Fordham ( arguably the worst team in the A10) last night. They struggled up til the end when Fordham choked. St. L is good, probably better than us, but not nearly top 25 material.

I agree. I watched them on TV over the weekend against LaSalle. SLU is not a Top35 team.

I've watched them play plenty. Season tickets now for 10+ years. They are tenacious on defense. Very, very tough. They struggle shooting the basketball, both from behind the arc and particularly from the free throw line.
They've allowed a number of lesser teams to hang around (aka Fordham), but if you look at SLU's resume, they have just 4 losses, 3 of which are to pretty good teams (Houston, Florida St. and Pitt) and two of those losses (Houston and Pitt), SLU had their chances in the last minute to pull out the win. They also have a win over Butler and true road win at Seton Hall.
I wouldn't be hasty to judge them on just one game, but looking at their body of work, it is surprising that they're not getting any votes after having won 5 in a row, combined with their overall resume.
Teams like Wisconsin (11-6 and losers of 4 out of 5), Purdue (11-6) and even Seton Hall themselves are still getting votes. South Carolina at 8-7 is getting 6 votes/points in the AP Poll?!?!

For the record, I'm not suggesting SLU should be ranked or that I would include them in my Top 25. Just given their resume (wins and losses), and some of the teams that ARE getting votes, I'm surprised that SLU's not getting a few votes.

Then what are you saying? You are surprised that some voter that should be paying more attention to the top 25 than us fans really isn't doing their job?

That depends on your interpretation of "doing their job" and the validity of all of us Monday Morning Quarterbacks who believe we 1) know more than the lazy, inept pollsters and 2) how you "rate" the others receiving votes section of the polls. Are all of the pollsters who voted for teams in the "others receiving votes" section simply wrong? Lazy? Uninformed? Because they're clearly in the minority, otherwise that said team they voted for would actually be in the Top 25.
As I look at SLU's resume, it would be difficult for me to "make a case" for SLU to be ranked ahead of anyone that's actually in the Top 25. But their resume is not that far off from some of those in the Top 25 and is certainly as good as and better than a bunch of those teams in the "others receiving votes" section.
The polls are often about the "flavor of the month", or better yet, the flavor of the week more accurately. And can be directly attributable to where said team perhaps started the season in the rankings.
A few examples: South Carolina at 8-7 is getting votes for the Top 25. They've won 4 in a row, which included a road win against Florida and a home win over ranked Miss. St. Flavor of the week? Kansas St. is getting 14 votes/points in the AP poll. They just grabbed a 1-point road win against ranked Iowa State. How good is Iowa St? Perhaps they got into the rankings as a flavor of the week the previous week (beat Kansas), but as a whole, their resume lacks any other quality wins and they followed up their win against Kansas by losing their next two. Back to KState. Perhaps they're still "receiving votes" based off of their early season predictions and rankings. But if you look at their resume, I can easily make a case for why SLU's resume is better that KState's. While I personally cannot make a case for SLU to be getting votes for the Top 25, I can suggest they're more worthy than KState and South Carolina.
Given these examples, I'm surprised that some pollsters haven't attempted to "make a case" for SLU, as others have attempted to make cases for some other undeserving teams. Thus, my surprise that SLU is not at least getting a few votes.

One of my good friends is a SLU graduate and a big basketball fan, so I keep my eye on them more than probably any other program in A10.
Think about their season and the way the polls work. There was some hype with them preseason and then knocked off Seton Hall on the road. A good win no doubt but at that time SH hadn't picked up any momentum yet. They did gain some but have now lost it. However, SLU followed that win on the road with a loss on a neutral court to Pitt. At that time Pitt was thought to be awful. The outlook for Pitt is better but still not great. SLU then beat a okay Butler team at home only to follow it up with a loss at S Illinois.
I think SLU is a tough defensive team but at no time they ever get any kind of signature win or multi game momentum to get consideration by the pollsters. The Flyers have better standing in most metrics so if you are surprised that SLU didn't garner a single vote, you should be equally surprised that the Flyers haven't either. I am not surprised that neither received a vote.
