NIT rules
Anyone understand the NIT rule changes? Most of them I understand, but the rule about getting your 2nd team foul in the half when there is less than 2 minutes left if it occurs before your 5th team foul. When does your 2nd team foul not occur before your 5th team foul?

here is the rule you mentioned:
"Team fouls will reset at the 10-minute mark of each half for the purpose of determining free throws and one-and-one free throws will be eliminated. Teams will shoot two bonus free throws after the fifth team foul of each 10-minute segment. Additionally, teams will be awarded two bonus free throws after the second team foul committed under two minutes remaining in each half if that foul occurs before the fifth team foul of the segment. In each overtime period, team fouls will reset, and teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fourth team foul or the second team foul committed under two minutes remaining if that comes before the fourth team foul of the overtime period."
Explanation:
Team fouls reset after each 10 minute segment. If a team has only 1 team foul in that last 10 minute segment where there is only 2 minutes left in the game, the fouled team will get 2 free throws on foul numbers 2 through 4. In other words, the team won't have to foul 3 times in order to get the team at the line, which is what they're trying to do in a fouling situation towards the end of game most of the time.

Good explanation
Why not just play 4 quarters instead of two split in half halves?

Sounds like they should detail it to left hand and right hand fouls, with left hand fouls worth 2 FT at all times (sorry about that all you LH folks out there!)

The official scorers at half the gyms of the A10 would be completely dorked up after the first 10 min segment.

Men’s college basketball is the only basketball organization that plays halves instead of quarters.

This was discussed recently among the ESPN talking heads. They all agree that men's college bb should fall in line with the rest of the bball world, but they also agree that it won't happen anytime soon thanks to the number of media timeouts, sponsors, and the almighty dollar. C'mon, it's the NCAA!

Basically, I think the foul rule is trying to mimick, if not copy the NBA rule. I believe there is a "under 2 minutes" foul rule where you start automatically get free throws in the 4th quarter.

Wouldn't a rule like that hurt a team that doesn't have five fouls yet but is winning?

yes, but I think the idea is, if you are down and need to foul to catch up (hoping they miss a free throw of course) its easier done this way, rather than having to foul, just to get to the 5 foul mark. I think the plan is to make the end of games a little more interesting.

I don't like it. Why do we need to start putting rules in to help keep the game close??? Shouldn't that be the job of the team playing to keep it close?
If college ever goes to the in bound on their own side of the court at the end of the game I am out!!!

I,don't want the college game to be just like the NBA. If I want to watch the NBA, I'll do so.
Why mess with something that isn't broken?

I'm just hoping the wider free-throw lane will allow Obi to take it to the rack more often.

Your wrong! 99% for the whole NCAA score keepers should have to go to a cheat sheet after the game is halted to figure it out. This would allow the broadcasters to explain it to all the fans......You go Bucky....... now that would be funny.
