VCU Game Thread
8-8. VCU taking it inside every time down. Can our weak bigs stop them without foul trouble. I like Coach's switching from man to zone. Lauren being covered like a blanket.

16-10 Flyers after quarter 1.
Regression to the mean - Flyers shooting 25% but 9-10 from the line. However, Rams only shooting 13%. Shooting for both teams will certainly pick up. Our defense is really good. They are calling fouls. That is to our advantage with our depth.

Lauren and Scaife sit and we build the lead to six at quarter's end. Chandler playing inspired, as Dennis sits after doing zero.
Getting to be our usual offense, 9-10 free throws and 3-12 from the field.

Smokin' with Colorado grass right now. Ten point lead as Scaife is tearing them up with 11. Ward with 3 points and 5 rebounds.

27-20 Flyers at the half. We are shooting 27% and Rams 21%. Our inside defense by our bigs has been excellent.

Those last two threes by Dennis and Ward were terrible judgement. No more of that.
Great half. Our D is frustrating VCU into bad shots. Not shooting well, but good enough. Keep making foul shots and keep outrebounding them and keep up the D.

Holding VCU to only 21% from the floor. Flyers aren't hitting much other than free throws. 11 for 12 from the line.

31-28 Flyers at 4:10 media timeout. Dangerous spot in game. Terrible shot selection so far this quarter.

37-31 Flyers after 3 quarters. 10 point quarter. Cannatelli blows late easy bunny and playing poorly. We are 6-20 on layups.

As the announcer said, our offensive movement is terrible. If Lauren sits in that corner and moves any less, she would be in a coma.
Have to get Scaife and Lauren in the offense now, or go home.

With 43 seconds to go in the game we are down 4. We finally get our first rebound of the 4th quarter on a missed free throw by the Rams.

How do you outrebound VCU by one in the first half and get outrebounded by 15 in the second half? They wanted it more and deserved the win.
How many point blank shots did we miss today, and of course all year?

Mauled on the boards & FT line. Jayla needed some help. Disappointing year. Tired of losing to VCU in everything. Must do better next year. Thanks Seniors.

61-52 VCU final. We shoot 29% for the game and got outrebounded 47-31 - including getting outboarded an unbelievable 15-1 in the 4th quarter. When you can't shoot and can't rebound, you most likely can't win.

One team understood the situation in the 4th qtr.
Lauren a no show today like many other days.
Jayla couldn't get her layup to go down for the and one.
Guess they will be in the WNIT with more of the same.

As I said before the tourney, this is the worst or second worst shooting team in program history. To win four in a row without anemic shooting costing you a victory was going to be all but impossible. They would have to be a team they weren't over the first 30 games of the season.
We got as far as the talent would allow. What we saw this week is who we are. Occasionally okay on offense but usually a hot mess.
Defense still played well enough to win as usual despite the 4th qtr.

This, with no doubt, has been a tough season.. I had a feeling that the girls would pull through but unfortunately that was not the case today. I am not disappointed but saden for conference play to end as it has for them but it is still not over! Whatever post-season draw we may get, I say we take it and ho full throttle! I wish them all well!
to the players who I KNOW check the forum: Keep your heads up! The record and season does not define you all as players. Keep working hard and keep grinding. DO NOT let this negative crap get to you because at the end of the day, these people are talking from a perspective that they don't have the complete ability to understand. You body is fine the way it is, believe in your abilities and advance them, you are not a waste of scholarship, and you have a PURPOSE! Block out the negative and roll with the positives. Take what makes you better and get better. On to the next.

Spoke with half dozen players, support staff, not coaches and family. Not one of them even was aware of UDPride. That's not all of course but I was going to introduce myself as avid flyer but they had no clue.
Now the vball team was aware

Despite the 4th Q? VCU scored an incredible 30 points in the 4th Q....that's a 120 point game pace. There was no defense in the 4th Q.

Youre forgetting the other 30 minutes where the defense was incredible -- perhaps almost too good. Dayton should have been up 20pts heading into the 4th qtr.
VCU shot 32.6% for the game and scored a whopping 61pts. If you cant win with that defense you cant win under any circumstances. Think about that. The opponent shot 32% and you still almost lost by double-digits.
Dayton shot 29% from the field. The Flyers lost every single game they played this year (a whopping nine losses) in which they shot under .353%, so they werent even close to where they needed to be in put themselves in a position to win. They had no chance today because of their offense. Sooner or later VCU was going to make a few baskets but that was not a guarantee for UD. In fact it would have been the exception to the rule.
By the way, want another stat: Dayton was 12-0 this year when they shot .400% or better. 40% is not a high bar and its even more impressive when you factor in that UD only shot above .450% three times all season. When this team made even a few shots, they were favored to win against every opponent. THey didnt have to shoot 50-55% from the floor. Anything in the 40-45% range was going to earn them a W.
Just not enough speed and athleticism on the court. They are unable to create separation in the offense and generate enough space to take quality shots -- whether its on the dribble, off screens, or whatever. They cannot shake defenders on the outside and cannot finish inside.
Its a shame because the defense this year was good enough to win this league by 2-3 games outright.

Of those 30 points, 15 were from the line as we fouled late trying to come back. It was not so much the poor defense in the 4th quarter, but the terrible lack of offense - went scoreless from 7:44 to 3:52 and from up 7 to down 3 - and no rebounds. I cannot imagine getting outboarded 15-1 in a quarter - but we did.

Well at least we showed up to play for 3 qtrs. Could have been worse, just ask Duquesne who got beat by Fordham 76 to 34. Ouch

Honestly, you kinda suck. Dennis wasn't the only one responsible for the boards. 3,4,&5 are to crash ast all times with 1&2 getting back. Rebounding is a team effort, not just one person. You need to deal with whatever internal issues you have with Australians and take the monkey off Maddy's back.

See no. I wouldn't bench the seniors but I would've definitely tweaked some minutes. Sat Lauren for a bit while rotating Fowler in the line up.

34,
You have to understand Mad dog. He hates everything. It's too bad really. I would hate to go through life seeing nothing but the bad. He has made a career of it.

So did you not hate this latest epic meltdown. Crunch time, season on the line. only 10 minutes to go, up 7.... and we just shat the bed, giving up 30....27 in the last 6.5, might be some sort of record! For those content with mediocre performance, well I’m not in favor, but to just collapse again at gut check time....well....
That’s the leadership, on the floor and equally on the sideline. Pathetic.

I wish the season turned out much differently than it has just as everyone else does. We had a bad 4th quarter - many things could've been done to prevent that but like I said earlier, this was a TEAM loss. You can't keep pinning things on one person. Also, like I've stated beforehand, Talk about Maddy if you will because you are indeed, entitled to your opinion but if it has nothing to do with basketball, it shouldn't be on here. You don't know what that could do to someone. & don't say the players need "thicker skin" either...how would you feel if you got on here and saw that the people who are supposed to "support" you, are on here saying you suck or you look fat or you're a waste of space... bet you wouldn't want that.

What that don't make any sense. You claim they read the board and don't pay attention to the user name. Then the basketball players must be a different breed. When I go to vball games I'm greeted by "heyAvid" they know me by my avatar an in many cases by real name. But Avid is the one they prefer.
As an example for Christmas I got a large UD envelope in the mail. Inside was season program with pics and bio on all players an staff. Everyone signed there pic and left a nice comment.
I introduced myself as avid 15 years ago an its been handed down ever since. No need to intro basketball as the ones I spoke with didn't know UDPride exists or what it was so I left it alone. Now some of parents knew but not their daughters.
Personally as a player I would avoid all message boards of this tyoe.

My comment wasn't meant for the VCU game but post play. A 4 year career is grueling an if there is no future in basketball why keep it going. Ask Duquesne coach, he even stated he felt his seniors many Europeans were spent. If invited to WNIT he'd have to have heart to heart with players to see who wanted to play. WNIT no big prize in Europe so would he play for next season giving returning players experience or just pass if no real interest.
I was suggesting UD might play returning players for experience. The WNIT isn't a big thing to a program like UD who is use to the big tourney. But for an upcoming program like Davidson it's a step in right direction. Just an opinion.

This season was a learning lesson for two coaches. For Shauna Green it's too many transferes, for Duquesne coach it's too many euros. In both cases it spoiled the soup.
The Flyers had most transfers on same team that I'd ever seen. Five players from 5 different programs with different coaches, players, routines, stratigies all coming together to work with two returning starters. No one knew others tendencies talents etc. Oh you can see a person's talents by watch them play but it's quite another playing with them. Might explain some off wall passing we'd seen in many games.
Shauna had to meld, talents, egos, etc into one team. A monumental task if you ask me. In her first two years she had less number wise to work with but they all had been together same team. This year it was individual parts that never truly jelled as a tesm. With an off season ahead an a years experience together they just might be a whole different team together next yesr. They can develop individually and as a team into the type UD team we are used to.

Avid. Trust me when I say, The forum is read AFTER EVERY GAME. The players even told Greeb about it..we're looking at whats being said. Often Jack72 or Maddog are the tops of discussion amongst the players. You recently introduced yourself to a player after the Davidson game. Folks may bot know you but the comments are definitely seen. It makes alot of sense.

Couldn't have been me as I've only been to one game live this year and that was SLU games here in St Louid. My schedule is looking better for next year as I'm open for most fall and pre December games. Hope to meet anyone who will be at the games. Wanted to meet my aussie Maddy Dennis before she left, wanted to here her accent. Told by many she's real sweet and genuine, doubt here post opponents would agree.

To single out individual players when the team collectively shot 38% this year is ridiculous. Everybody that hoisted a shot shouldered part of the blame -- which is everybody. And its not like they were not self-aware they were unable to make shots. You know when you are missing a lot of shots. We couldnt finish inside and couldnt shoot from the outside. It wasnt a post problem and it wasnt a perimeter problem. It was a collective shortcoming and all parties were responsible.
The same players were responsible for outstanding defense all season. Granted the A10 was extremely weak this year so comparing DFG% this year to earlier years is not quite apples to apples, but UD played well enough defensively to win this league going away. The players were inept on one side of the ball only. Some fans on here act like Maddy single-handedly shot Dayton out of every game this year. Well, so did her teammates. Not a single perimeter player shot 40% and just one post player shot 45%. The culpability was evenly spread like butter on toast. To pull one name out of the hat and lay most of it on that player is morbidly unfair -- they all had help. Too much. That includes the best players on the team.
When you miss makeable shots every night, its frustrating. If you think the fans were frustrated, imagine how the coaches and players felt. Im confident they focused on the problem all season despite it never getting better. That's frustration squared.

Sure she’s as sweet as pie. My issue is that her basketball skills were below standard. Couldn’t rebound at all. The last game was classic.
Further, 41 % of her shots from 3, although an interior player hitting a pitiful 26% this year. Some of this is coaching, why would they allow her these? Lovely though she may be, she is emblematic of the mediocre squad we have.

Oh thank you so much Maddog the more you post the more you show your ignorance. First off Maddy Dennis is a foward
You do know what a forward is? She was thrust to defend the post. The only one willing to tangle with the opponet. Took quite a few charges, forced opponents to Alter there shots, took ball away multiple time, blocked shots basically defending the post quite well. He offense never was under the glass but on the parimeter. If you recall trailing 45 to 41 Shauna called time out with a set play, a triple from the corner which was executed to perfection cutting lead to one. Guess who shot the trey, yep the very one you can't give credit too. Laurens game was off and Shauna knew it. Called Maddy’s number an she delivered. Guess you never saw her double double games, ya know where you score 10 or m I re points an rebound 10 or more per game. But those kind of contributions you automatically ignore in search of more negative things to post about. Maddog the negatator.

I would suggest Maddog stop by the WBB office to share his insight and knowledge. You are only doing us Flyer fans, players, coaches, and the basketball program a disservice by not intervening and letting this go on in perpetuity. By letting it happen when you could stop it makes you equally complicit.

I also suggest Maddog start a thread titled coach advisory pinned at the top so that Shauna Green an Anthony Grant can randomly stop by throughout the season to pick up pointers on how to coach. This would be an invaluable service to the success of the respective programs.

As disappointing a season as UD had it pales in comparison to Duquesne who was receiving top 25 points pre season.
No other team came close to the margins of victory or loss as did the dukes. Tuesday first day of A10 tourney they win scoring 107 points only to trail 46 to 9 at halftime in the semi finals on their home court no less. Final Fordham 74 Duquesne 36. They therefore are the sole choice for the dr. Jeckle Hyde award.

Glad to hear that I am popular, because I am sure the players are thinking positive thoughts. They have to be positive thoughts since Flyer34 and the players could not be doing what they accuse others of doing.
Very sad that there are only about a dozen of us who regularly post on the the women's site and follow the the team with a passion, and some newbie poster gets on here to pick at us and spew negativity. I may not agree with what others say but it is great that they care and say it. This is the USA, where you are allowed to say what you are thinking, so keep doing it, as I plan to.

Not saying you can't say what you want but WHAT THE F**K do you get out of body shaming and tearing down 18-22 year old girls? huh? WTF does that do for you?? Get you off? And no, no the players don't think positive most of the time its "if they hate us so much then why support? Why are they all in our faces and locker room but on here talking like this?" No one is perfect and no game will be perfect but you all have noooooo right to call for anyone's deportation, calling anyone fat, or saying someone isn't worthy. Players already struggle enough the last thing they need is the people that are supposed to support them to tear them down even more. Some players have even put your negative comments as their twitter headers. If you say something, it should be constructive but uplifting.I SAID WHAT I SAID and will continue to defend them. Yall take it too far sometimes. Newbie or not, I'd like to see if you all could handle have of what they have to do on a daily basis, PERIOD.

Flyer34 since you are close to the team why not give them a voice. Let them list favorite and least favorite posters along with their comments regarding each.
We posters can defend ourselves but the players don't have that option.

Flyer34, I hope for your well being that you can dismiss what gets posted on this board as the bloviating of mostly old folks who probably couldn't do in a million years what the team does day-in and day-out. I for one will try to do better. You know what they say about opinions...

Here's another thought. Player gets mad at the coach for yelling at all the time. Coach replies it's my job to support you and make you better. Don't worry about me yelling at you, start worrying when I stop.
Same for this board. Everyone wants the team to succeed that's why they post an follow the tesm. Some posters and players might get angry with some of the posts but it's better than a thread with no posts. Careful what you ask for.
I've been following the ladies since the NAIA days pre D1. Of course if they prefer a silent thread I do have the vball and men's basketball teams to follow.
As for the comment we old folks can't do what they do on a daily basis, you're correct. However I'd like to see any of them do on a daily basis what I and teens their age did on a daily basis defending our country and the world so they can get a ship and play their favorite sport. Vietnam vet 1964 - 1968.

It's not only IF you yell, it's also WHAT you yell. Lots of abusers justify their behavior with "only trying to make you better." Personally, I view someone who needs to yell all the time as a weak personality that probably doesn't have the knowledge, experience, confidence, or self control to lead and succeed; yelling is compensation to make it look like they're in charge and on top of things.
I think anything posted here that's strictly basketball related is fair game, including specific game play, but I don't think that includes things like saying that any player has been a waste of a scholarship or should leave the team.

Couldn't agree more on this. Bob Knight's behavior toward his players was embarassing and it eventually ended his career. Same will happen to the Iowa coach with his tirades.

Avid,
the only issues are when posters comment on their bodies, talk about their home life, and classify them as a waste of space. Some care about being called trash and below standard skill level, some don't care about what the board says at all. .

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, Thank you for serving our country but that has nothing to do with basketball but if you wanna take it there, Im sure if any of these young women, or just women in general, wanted to enlist - they could. Now due to the society's view on women and working- we'd get knocked down the latter as soon as we start to climb but what makes us powerful beings, is that we never give up and we don't accept defeat. Unfairly so, we have to work twice as gard as men do, just to get 1/4 of what we really deserve. So women can do just as men can, sometimes even better- sports, militart, business, education, you name it. Its getting better but we still dont have the equaulity we deserve.
Back to basketball... No one says you have to have a silent thread. if you wanna talk basketball - talk BASKETBALL. leave the body shaming and personal life out of it. thats all im saying

This, I agree with! if it's basketball related it is fair game to an extent. This is NO place to discuss anything happening off the court especially if it is not basketball related.

So you are female, ok but here is something to consider. This is the fans board not the coaches or players board. We show both our support or frustration here. Since most posters here are out of towners this is where we connect.
You are either a player or parent. Never wise for either to engage with fans. Every board has their desenters and unfortunately haters. Does not make a difference the subject. That is why there is a ignore feature.
You are the one who called us old timers out as not able to do what they do on a daily basis. Dumb statement and comparison as neither will they when they are seniors. Yrs they could enlist and serve their country but they didnt, they chose to get a degree by playing a sport they love.
Knowing your gender now makes easier to see where you are coming from. The choice to come to a fans board is yours and the players. You know well in advance the posters and most likely the reaction to the performance the see. Not sure the kind of reaction you're expecting when the team lays an egg. Shauna Green certainly does not hold back on the side line, in fact she has quite a potty mouth.
You are coming here for feedback, praise for job well done and a little gluten for punishment when not done well. Not sure who is body slamming as I don't read all posts. Even I know the posters to avoid. I try avoid Maddog but when he unreasonably attacks one of my favorite players I have to respond.
