UD tried very hard to recruit Payne. Not sure how serious he took UD's recruiting effort.

I had court side seats for his HS state championship game (against my alma mater). The guy could ball. Kept thinking how much I hated MSU and wondered just how much of a game changer he would have been for UD. RIP.

Trying to be a peace maker

The guy who shot him can claim fear and self defense all he wants. If it's true that he walked into the house to get the gun, I think that qualifies at premeditated.

Payne probably had a lot of interest in signing with UD as to his grandmother being able to make the short trek to UD Arena to see him play. AP’s junior year in high school I was told to my face over beers by one of Payne’s “handlers” whom I’ve know for years, “We think he can do bigger than UD.” Recall back then it was all based on how much the player’s scholarship was worth as they got to keep some of the remaining funds. My buddy actually broke down to me the dollar amounts each school on the radar proposed scholarship amount were opposed to the amount it took to attend the universities. The numbers looked crazy back then, but again the athlete/“handlers” were given the balance.

Not sure about that but I'm no legal expert. While I believe the killer is a total liar, there's probably several interpretations of this Florida law. I mean if you're in your yard/house and you're threatened or have a fear for your life, I'm not sure it matters if you have a gun on you already or you go inside your car or house to retrieve one.

Once he is inside his house, I don't see how he is under threat anymore. Unless Payne was outside banging on the door trying to get in the house, like breaking a window or something.
