Welcome to the Family Tyrone Baker!
6'11" Freshman Transfer from Georgia
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc1CwKGl..._web_copy_link
There's Mou's Replacement... Rim-Runner... Might be the next one after Deuce
Only played 3 Games last year, then broke his hand mid way through the year and was shut down.
He committed to UGA over UD and a couple others last year.

247 had him as a three star and had this writeup about him:
A high quality athlete who is quick off the floor as a leaper. Also has length to boot and is an effortless rim runner. Not an offensive playmaker as a handler or passer nor known for his shooting. But has nice form on his jumper which is encouraging for his future as a shooter. Is a great finisher at the rim and excels at finishing lob passes. Has high level defensive versatility and prowess. Hits the glass with a high motor. Has promising upside.

Baker’s coach at Hightower High School Stephen Woods says Baker’s best basketball should be ahead of him because he has only been playing basketball since he was a freshman.
“He’s very versatile,” Woods said. “He needs to get stronger. He’s 6-foot-10 and about 205 or 210 pounds. He has to put on 15 or 20 pounds of muscle on. He has to improve his ball handling. He has the fluid footwork. When dribbles he can euro step. He has good footwork into his shot. For me, for young players like that, I don’t like to put them in a box and see he’s this type of player or that type of player. To me, because of his versatility he has upside… He’s still learning.”

Did he get a medical redshirt for last year?
Another example of recruiting a guy out of high school paying dividends down the line

We won't know quite yet... We get at least 3 and will probably get the 4th down the road if it gets that far.

He played 8 minutes in 17 games before his injury. May need time to develop.

Be interesting to see if there's any roster movement from him coming in. Gotta think the number of available front court minutes just went down

Gotta give AG major props on the recruiting front. Everyone the last two classes had power conference offers or transferred in from a power conference.
That to me is the biggest gauge that recruiting is well

I doubt Camara will stay in the draft unless the scouts give he and Coach Grant positive feedback, but I guess there is a chance more minutes may become available.

Speaking of Camara, if Tyrone works out as well as Camara did last season (2nd half) and we all expect this season, does Tom Crean get votes for UD coach of year?

I was thinking that it would be counter productive for the new team to redshirt a kid from the portal. Wouldn’t that make it easier for him to leave down the line as he’d have his free no sit transfer still available? Why invest 2 years in a kid you only got 1 year on the court from and then he transfers and can play immediately elsewhere.
Maybe the rule is it’s only free the first xfr?

Regarding Amaefule, I believe it was not intended to red shirt. I recall a disappointed AG saying at that the rehab for Amaefule was going to take longer than expected, and would just go ahead and red shirt him.
I also remember hearing that he was playing well preseason, I assume he re-injured or was still limited in some way that kept him out.

Its possible Carmana leaves after next year and plays professionally back in Europe. As a Danish Citizen with a high major game, I imagine he'd be an attractive option if those leagues still require a certain % of players to be nationals. (no clue if that is the case anymore or not). At any rate, if Mani graduates and tries to earn a living somewhere next year its possible both Amaefule and Baker are your starting frontcourt if DaRon should find is way into the NBA draft after next season.

He could have immediate eligibility as grad transfer down the road, but the one time undergraduate exception would be off the table. AG did the same with Amaefule, so I think it's a possibility he could do the same here with a crowded front court.

Is Amari Davis a 1 or a 2? Would he be available in 22-23 since he already transferred once? He would fit the need of grabbing a vet from the portal, but I would expect it to be a guy who could play the 1. I can’t see Davis displacing Elvis or Brea. Davis is not an elite shooter.

Davis has always been considered a shooting guard. That is what verbalcommits. com listed him coming out of Trotwood HS. He played his freshman year at SG for Green Bay of the Horizon League and averaged 17.2ppg in a far less respected conference than the SEC. He was a shooter but he didn't shoot a very good percentage on 3 pointers! We need a PG only whose specialty is protecting the ball!

Welcome aboard, Tyrone. Watching those videos, I can see his ability to finish around the rim. He looks pretty smooth, and I agree With Gazoo about his no nonsense demeanor. I can also see he needs to add muscle. He is pretty skinny. If it's true he Has high level defensive versatility and prowess. Hits the glass with a high motor. Has promising upside, then he will get his share of playing time.

Tyrone Baker is listed on the Georgia men’s basketball roster for 2021 / 22 at 6’11”, 210. His birthday is shown as 02/19/2003. There is a mention of him having an illness and staying in the hotel when the rest of the team dressed to play. There is also a mention of him breaking his hand in practice in January and not dressing for anymore games for the rest of the year.
Actually, I noticed that the University of Dayton men’s basketball roster no longer lists birthdays. I remember the web site showed birthdays in the past. I was going to compare his age with the other Dayton players. But without that information on the web site, I can’t do the comparison.

That is a stretch complement given Holmes' skills. Watching the tapes, which granted are two years old, he appears to have a decent handle and court vision, plays defense, gets down the court, and is a good passer. Negatives I saw were strength, average hands, not a great leaper and a little slow on his shot blocks.

I'll double down. The tapes I saw of Duece three years ago were very similar to Baker's today. Yes, Holmes was harvesting attention back then, but the potential across the spectrum was somewhat unrealized.
We are going to see a quantum leap by both players.

Excited to see Baker join the team. Cannot have enough long athletic guys.
Seems notable that both Baker and Jalin Billingsley, a guy UD seemed to be in on pretty heavily and ended up at Georgetown, were in the portal, and UD came away with Baker. Might document a preference or could be circumstantial. Either way, thought it was interesting that given the chance to re-recruit the position, they ended up with Baker.
Might be the pessimist in me, but I wonder if there's more news before May 1. The team is very forward and center heavy. Holmes, Amzil, Amaefule, Baker, Camara, Blakney, Washington and Nwokeji. These are all guys I'd classify as bigs or wings and not guys I necessarily want handling the ball under duress. This leaves Smith, Elvis and Brea (not exactly a combo) and Sharavjamts as your only primary ballhandlers. Feels perilously thin to me.
It also leaves a real log jam up front. Everybody's back and the only minutes that open up are Sissoko's, and that's not many. I imagine Baker and Amaefule have some hope to play. I presume Washington didn't come back thinking he was going to play 63 minutes again. Amzil played fewer minutes last year, I can't imagine they dock him even more. I guess it just seems strange to bring in Baker unless there's more that we don't already know.

I think bringing Baker is in about preparing for the future
Real possibility Holmes and Camara are gone after next year.
Camara having an EU passport could be in line for a nice pay day playing back in Europe

Real possibility Holmes and Camara are gone after next year.
Camara having an EU passport could be in line for a nice pay day playing back in Europe

I presume you're right, but most guys want to play.
I imagine Nwokeji understands his spot, but Amaefule, Washington (64 minutes last year) and Baker (10 minutes) are likely chomping at the bit to get their college careers started. They'll have a Sissoko's 210 minutes to fight over.
Grant does an excellent job defining roles and maintaining harmony, so I'm sure folks are on the same page, but just the numbers of guys looking for minutes at the 3, 4 and 5 is awful crowded.
It seems there's something ahead, maybe a transfer, maybe an injury, that we're not privy to right now. The roster composition doesn't make sense otherwise.

I think it's a prove it year for those guys. We'll probably see movement from some of them after next season
I like Amzil but last season was disappointing after his freshman year. Could be a chance to cut into his minutes

I agree with the above. Grant is the alpha dog in the whole equation, and he has always seemed to maintain good communication with the keepers and the leapers. I don't recall virtually any bad feedback made public after a player has left. I would expect AG would do all he can to help a player find the appropriate slot without it playing out in the media.
That said, there is a new factor in the equation for all coaches to deal with, that being the portal. So AG's interpersonal relationships more than ever are going to be tested.
As far as earning minutes, so much of that is decided in practices and not transparent to us prognosticators.

The Jablonski story in Dayton Daily News may shed a little light on Baker's thinking and motivations. This from his former high school coach:
“I told him wherever you choose, make sure you go to a program that’s going to win,” Wallace said. “Dayton’s always won. He just experienced losing. It’s no fun. I said, ‘Don’t worry about playing time. Go somewhere where you’re going to win. You’re good enough player to earn your spot.’”

Excerpts:
“When I think about it, this is where I should have come last year,” he said. “Back even before I got any college offers, I had a friend telling me all about Dayton, saying it was this and saying it was that.
“My coach said it, too. He told me about Coach Grant, but I really didn’t understand what Dayton was.”
Because of the way the transfer portal now works in college basketball, if a school doesn’t get a player in its first recruiting attempt, it may have a shot at him again just a year later
That’s what happened with UD and Baker.
When he was first recruited by the Flyers, he wasn’t able to visit campus because of the COVID pandemic.
This time he visited in late April and six days later he signed with Dayton.
When I call my people, they say, ‘You sound happy. It sounds like everything’s good.’
“And I tell them it is.
“I love it here.”

one player he talked to was Toumani Camara, who had transferred in from Georgia a year earlier.
“He told me he wished he had known about Dayton before he signed (with the Bulldogs) too,” Baker said.
Didn't we recruit him out of high school?

We did, But I thought he was probably referring to the entire experience at Dayton, don't remember if he was ever on a campus for a visit including a game day,

I see on the Dayton Flyers roster page that Tyrone Baker is listed at 6’9”, 204. He has shrunk from the 6’11” that was on the Georgia men’s basketball roster 2021 22 page. How does that happen?

Ht measurements have always been questionable. I am 5' 11" - Negele Knight was about an inch shorter then me in person - but listed as 6' on the UD roster and I think went to 6'1'' when he was with the Suns. So go figure.

Everyone grows one inch taller when the player joins the NBA. Magic Johnson was 6’8” in college and much taller once in the NBA. Charles Barkley was 6’4 and 1/2 In college but 6’6” in the NBA.

It’s the latest craze in transitioning, from really really tall to just really tall. There’s a lot of buzz, hype and controversy surrounding it. AOC is involved as is Bill Walton and the “da plane, da plane” guy from Love Boat . . .

I think I've seen the opposite a fair amount -- Donovan Mitchell was 6-3 at Louisville and he's 6-1 with the Jazz. Trae Young was 6-2 at Oklahoma, but he's 6-1 with the Hawks. ....... and regardless of how tall he actually was, Barkley was listed at 6-6 everywhere (Auburn and multiple NBA teams).

RIP Herve Villechaize.
He was listed at 4'0" when he played Nick Nack in The Man with the Golden Gun and 3'11" when he played Tattoo on Fantasy Island.

What must Tyrone think if he reads this thread? Welcome to the off season, I guess. Wish we had some news about his progress. I'm hoping he has a breakout season ala Obi a few years ago.
Will be lots of fun watching him and Amaefule and Washington and Nwokeji and Amzil fight for minutes along side of Camara and Holmes. Wow. My money is on Tyrone Baker.
And, are heights typically with shoes or without? And why don't they show wingspan along with height and weight?

Conversations about the height of our players take me back to a couple of stories from when I was an undergrad in the early 1980s.
One of my housemates, who was about 5’7”, had a job as a monitor in the computer lab. He came home from his job one day telling me he had assisted Ted Harris, who was listed at 6’1” on the roster. I’m 6’1” in my sneakers. My housemate said that Ted was really closer to his height than to mine (so, about 5’9” or 5’10”). So, that’s one story.
The other revolves around 2 guys who were listed on the roster at 6’8”: Rory Dahlinghaus and Jim Shields. They were in the same Christian Marriage class as my future wife and me, and they sat next to each other about 3 rows in front of us in the Sherman Hall auditorium. Fr. Burns always had everyone stand for prayer at the beginning of each class. When the 2 of them stood up, you could see a definite difference in height of about 2”. I’ve walked by Rory at recent games in the Arena, and he looks to be a legitimate 6’8”, so that would have put Shields at about 6’6”.

it is all about the heel height!
So when I was coaching girls AAU ball, I told them we were going to take official height measurements for our roster before a large event that many college coaches would be at. My 5'1" point guard walked into practice wearing at least 6" tall high heels!

If I could get away with it, I’d take 2”. Unfortunately, that would make me 6’3” and still unable to dunk.

I played against Donald Smith years after his UD days were over. I was a few years younger so never got to play against him before that day. Smitty was listed at 6'0" while at UD. At 6'2", I towered over him and felt Kareem Abdul Jabbar next to him.
But he still had that incredible shake and bake move...

All this talk about measured heights either being 6'-8" or 6'-6" or similar reminds me of the first semester at UD for me.
Midway through I mentioned my progress in a phone call to my parents. I told them looks like maybe a 3.2 ...
Later as the tape showed in the mail over Christmas ... 1.8 was the actual 'height'
Later as it 'grew to' over 2.0 I called it a 'growth spurt'!
Go Flyers! No matter what your height play ball!
