Big Steve
Six years ago today. I remember where I was when I saw the news of his passing. What could have been. Good player, better person. RIP Big Steve.

His smile made him my favorite Flyer on that team.
One of the two saddest days in Flyers history.

We were in Fort Wayne the weekend after Steves passing for an AAU basketball tourney at Spiece Field House, a facility with 8 courts under one roof, where Steve had played many AAU games and open gyms over the years. My Dayton Flyers shirt led to several Spiece employees and an official or two making comments and starting conversations. The common theme was Steves smile and how he was always so happy, well liked and just a fun guy to be around.

Remembering Steve makes me sad but brings back many happy memories. I treasure the picture I had made with him near the end of the season at a WBB game. Talked to him the first time at a pre-season picnic before his red shirt year. I knew that day his big smile and personality would make him a fan favorite. On this day I think of all the people whose lives he improved with his decision to be an organ donor.
God be with his family and all who love him.
A couple of updates on Steve's family.
His father died in November, 2021, at age 50.
His brother, Escavar, graduated from Indiana University last weekend.

Our son was ballboy at a game during his redshirt season. As the players came out, he high-fived them all, but stopped short of Steve, not knowing he was a player. Steve grabbed him by the hands, pulled him onto the court a little, and danced a bit with him. Such a fun person.

IMO It's also time there was a memorial for Steve in the Arena. It doesn't need to be flashy. Chris's memorial was not put back up after the arena "transformation". There should be a memorial for Thomas Luppe. Chris Daniels and Steve McElvene, preferably by one of the Marian crosses, in the arena.

As everything is today...there are some politics here. I’m not sure the University should fund memorials. I think they would have to do it for all students who pass away while enrolled at UD. That’s probably a couple a year. But I think there should be a memorial for all listed above. I just think it has to be a private donation drive from boosters. When Volleyball player Kacie Hausfeld was killed in a plane accident a couple mothers of her teammates arranged the private fund drive and I believe there is a bench on campus in her honor.

Thanks for your input. I'm fairly certain Chris' was funded by the Athletic Department ,but times have indeed changed since 1996.
It was a picture of Chris dunking and a modest size plaque. Cost would be minimal to have something like that for all three, but there may be other factors like source of the funding.
I had not considered that, but now I'm motivated to look into it.

They have the serenity pines by Marycrest for just this for students and faculty, so I don't think it's that outrageous to have something in the Arena for players.

I agree. I think all three players should have something at the arena. I just don’t think I would want to be the President who has to explain to a parent why one student gets a memorial paid for by the university and their child did not. I didn’t go to UD, so maybe there is something for others...a wall with names or some recognition. I do know the University was supportive of Kacie’s bench. The funds were just raised privately.
