Transfers
Some of the recent discussion in the 19-20 thread about what I would call lazy predictive modeling got me thinking about how that should be done rather than letting schools like UD this year be data anomalies rather than attempting to quantify and predict based on new players etc.
This got me thinking about our transfers over the past years. We’ve had great success with guys like Jordan and Vee transferring ‘down’ a level. We’ve also had guys like Dillard who were food for UD in more or a lateral move and then guys like Dave Colbert who was great as a level up transfer.
Other than a PG with concussion issues from a few years back, and Alex G who was an adequate role player, I’ve had trouble thinking of too many iffy or outright whiffs we’ve had via transfer. I’m thinking we are deserving of at least an A- ??

Alex G transferred out, but he did not transfer in to UD.

Detwon Rogers comes to mind as a bust. JUCO transfer that never played a second at UD.
Others I can remember:
Rob Lowery
Darnell Haskins
Charles Cooke
Mickey Perry
Chip Jones (JUCO)
Andres Sandoval ( Richmond to JUCO to UD)
Thiago Cordiero (JUCO)

The leading scorer for the last x years was a transfer.
Matt D did not work. Like any other recruit, transfers can be hit and miss. Since Archie, there have been a number of high contributing transfers.
A big part of UDs strategy is the transfer portal. Interesting, but are there any transfers to UD this year?

If you want to go way, way back, Hank Finkel transferred to UD from St. Peter's

Cedric Toney I thought was from Georgetown.
And on that team in 84/85 was another transfer - Dave Colbert - if memory serves from Youngstown state.

Sedric — not Cedric — came to Dayton from Western Nebraska Community College, though he’d played high school ball in Dayton. Dave Colbert transferred in from Cleveland State.

Larry Hisle, Wisconsin - whole lot of blah
Josh Parker, Drake - very serviceable
Andres Sandoval, Richmond - very serviceable
Gavrilovic originally committed to Providence if memory serves but was let out of that commitment for some reason (Ed Cooley hire?).
I think Chase Johnson, Ibi Watson, Jordy, and Chatman have as much upside as any transfers not named Jordan Sibert. In the modern A10 era, Sibert is the measuring stick. Ibi could easily be better than Cooke in two years despite less college experience at the same point they debuted for UD.
You dont win games on paper though.

D.J. Stelly averaged 6.5pts and 3.1reb in his 2 years playing behind Brooks Hall.

Dave Colbert was a beast of a player. He could go inside or outside. He averaged over 18 points per game his second year as a Flyer.

I don't care how we get this person but we need a Jordan Sibert on our team every season. Most of our "great" 3 point shooters could hit them throughout the game(Baby D, Cooke) but brick them when we needed it most. But when we needed that do or die, Jordan stands by himself. So many huge 3s at the most crucial times. But if that was all he brought, that would've been great but he was money at the free-throw line when needed the most and could finish a fast break better than anyone non name Kyle Davis. And his defense was pretty darn good too. Jordan Sibert was the common denominator between winning NCAA tourney games and not.
I haven't seen what we have this season but it sounds like we might have one or two that have a consistent enough stroke from 3 point land to give us that again. I sure hope so.
