BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- If you are a recruitnik like me, UD Pride MB poster lhsgolf19 or FlyerHoops MB poster Dr. Bluff (aka Dr. Tom Hirt), you were no doubt looking forward to the GEICO High School Basketball Nationals that kick off March 31st in Ft. Myers, FL. The tournament would provide us the opportunity to see AG super recruit DaRon Holmes and his Compass Prep (AZ) compadres compete against some of the best teams in the country. That chance was eliminated when DaRon was ruled ineligible to play, as he had transferred to Compass Prep on January 2nd, two days after the cutoff that GEICO rules imposed. We’ll have to settle for watching DaRon’s teammate, PG Ty Ty Washington perform, a player who is on AG’s (and every other major program’s) recruiting radar screen.

Since we can’t see Holmes perform live on The ESPN Family of Networks, the next best thing is to drag out the imaginary 8 mm movie projector and do some good old fashioned film study on our guy DaRon.

The initial game we will look at is Compass Prep vs. BFL Prep (WA) at The Grind Session World Championship earlier this month. DaRon is #35 in the day-glo green uni; Ty Ty is #3:

The first thing you will no doubt say when you fire this mutha up is “Who the hell is #5 on the other team?” That would be Paolo Banchero, the #3 rated 2021 prospect and a Duke signee. Banchero has reportedly grown to 6’10” and tips the Toledos at about 230, so he has 2” and at least 20-30 lbs. on Holmes, who would be charged with covering him. Here is a profile of Paolo Banchero:

Given the fact that DaRon Holmes is noted for his tough D and shot-blocking ability, let’s chart some of the defensive possessions in this abbreviated game tape:

0:38 Paolo backdoors DaRon and dunks
1:35 Banchero pulls up and hits a three
1:52 #5 drives on DaRon’s teammate for a slam
3:38 Paolo drives on Holmes who blocks his layup attempt
4:53 DaRon is out of position and Banchero drives for a dunk
5:25 Paolo tries a fallaway J and gets a Spaulding sandwich, courtesy of DaRon
6:06 Banchero gets a nice feed from a teammate and slams it home
6:33 Paolo misses a reverse layup over DaRon’s outstretched arms and Holmes taps the ball to Ty Ty who feeds Josh Uduje for a dunk
8:35 Banchero leads a fast break that results in him jamming

Those are Paolo Banchero’s only buckets -- the highlight tape features all 7 ‘em. What it doesn’t show are his multitude of misses. Banchero was only 7 for 25 from the field or 28%. DaRon did an outstanding job defending one of the premier big men in the country.

If you watch the whole tape what you will notice is that this is no ordinary HS tilt. The vast majority of these guys are D-1 signees or prospects. I was particularly impressed with the way that Compass Prep shared the ball. We all hope that Ty Ty Washington joins DaRon in Red and Blue. His pass to Josh Uduje for the game winner at the buzzer was an unselfish thing of beauty.

Next up we have Compass Prep vs. Ypsi Prep (MI) in Vandalia at the Top Gun Showcase on March 8th. I was very apprehensive about this game due to the presence of this guy:

That and the fact that this tilt took place only two days after The Grind Session World Championship featured above.

Turns out, there was no need to be worried, as DaRon (sporting a Dayton shirt in warmups) and his mates obliterated Emoni Bates, Dayton native Shawn Phillips and company. Having the game take place in suburban Gem City gave Flyer fans an opportunity to show DaRon (and Ty Ty) some love.

As Warner Wolf used to say “Let’s go to the highlights”:

This time, we will chart DaRon on offense:

0:23 DaRon passes out to Ty Ty for an open triple
0:31 Holmes catches and hits for two under the hoop
0:38 DaRon makes a steal and feeds Josh Uduje for a layup
1:30 Holmes rejects #25’s layup attempt
2:02 Ty Ty feeds DaRon for a slam
3:55 Holmes grabs an offensive rebound and puts it back
5:57 DaRon snags the O board and puts it back and is fouled
6:12 DaRon feeds #32 for a layup
7:25 Ty Ty alley oop to Holmes for the dunk
7:32 Washington again feeds DaRon who again crams it home
8:25 Holmes feeds #23 for a three
9:00 DaRon drives to the hole, misses, puts the stick-back in
9:15 Holmes finishes his evening with a corner three and is fouled by Casper the Friendly Ghost

Wish I could have been there in Vandalia to watch DaRon play. Wish Holmes was eligible to compete this week at the GEICO. Wish DaRon would suit up for UD this fall.

One out of three ain’t bad.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
