Mel Daniels, a former player and now scout for the Pacers was a regular at Flyer games during CW's years at UD, so he certainly knows about Chris.

Box score for the first game. CW played 17 min, went 2-3 from the field and 2-4 from the line to end with 6 points, 1 reb, and 2 steals.

Orlando Johnson had some nice stretches with 13 points and six boards, but had some foul issues, totaling five. Miles Plumlee was a little less effective today, but with only four field goal attempts (three makes), he clearly wasn't the focus of the offense at any point in the game, still offering a better outing than Colton Iverson and Fab Melo. The real surprise of the day came from Chris Wright, who had six (emphatic) points in the first quarter as part of an eight point game where he got to the line six times. As well, Rasual Butler had his first decent game of the Summer League, posting seven points on 3-7 shooting, with three boards and a steal.

Looks like a nice showing by Chris today!

Didn't see him on the D-League select team, but they are participating.

http://www.nba.com/2013/news/05/29/t...gue/index.html

Here are the teams in it: ATL, CHA, CHI, CLE, DAL, DEN, GS, LAC, LAL, MEM, MIA, MIL, MIN, NO, NY, PHO, POR, SAC, SA, TOR, and WAS.

Not sure who needs what, but I do know some teams(like Miami and the Lakers) don't have any cap space except for guys like CW. If Boston were here I would think they might be an option, but who knows.

I watched CW play about the last 10 minutes of a NBA summer league game last night. Not sure what channel that was, ESPN maybe?

Anyway, it was Toronto vs. Miami playing in Las Vegas.

CW had 6 points for the part of the game that I watched. He made 2 baskets and was 2/6 on free throws. Made some nice plays on offense. Looked good on defense. Looked good in transition. Good hustle, good attitude.

Arizona's/Xavier's Mark Lyons was on CW's team. They were on the floor together for about the last 5 minutes of the game.

CW and Lyons were playing for Toronto.

I thought it was interesting that each player was allowed 10 fouls each I think. The announcers kept commenting on how many fouls had been called by the refs. I think there were around 80 fouls called altogether by the end of the game. I think the announcers said that the point of allowing 10 fouls/player was to allow the players to get used to the NBA game/get used to what is allowed on defense in the NBA.

It didn't seem like there was much teamwork/team ball being played. It seemed like the game was more about each player showcasing his individual talents/his individual game. I imagine the showcasing part of the game was at least true for the guys that don't have a contract yet. I think the first round draft picks and maybe some veterans(that already have a contract)were playing too, so I think those guys weren't concerned with showcasing themselves.

I caught the game earlier today and I agree with you ud2 that he looked good on both ends of the floor. It seemed like he made a lot of nice defensive plays and helped his teammates out on several occasions. I was certainly impressed by his performance and the team he is on looked bad. Maybe it was just an off night for that team though. The only thing that I cringed at was his free throw shooting where he ended up 4-13 at the line. He had some horrible passes thrown to him like the lob pass at the rim and a garbage pass that was overthrown. There was no way of keeping that pass in bounds. But, I hope for the best for him and it was great seeing a Flyer out there on the court. It certainly made me proud to watch. I think there were a total of 3 A10 players with Wright, Lyons and Taylor from GW. Not a bad showing at all....well...from Taylor anyways.

I didn't see CW take a mid-range or longer-range jumpshot, so I don't know how his perimeter offensive game is.

And I didn't see him drive to the basket using his left hand, so I don't know if he has made any progress with his left handed ballhandling.

He needs to do better than 4/13 at the ft line.

I didn't remember that Taylor played for GW.

There were a couple bad passes thrown CW's way that weren't his fault.

Still, overall though, I thought he looked good.

How he looks is largely irrelevant other than the first two points. Without those, staying on a roster is going to be extremely difficult.

CW hangs around and gets camp invites because of the things he does well. Those things wont get him on a roster, especially once he moves up in minimum salary. Doing much better at the things he doesn't do well is what will determine his NBA fate. The fact he isn't taking midrange jumpers or driving the ball using his left hand means he is still very much a longshot IMHO.

4 of 13 from the ft line??

Man, I want CW to succeed as much as any Flyer fan, just like I hope Roberts does. But it defies logic how a talented, athletic, buffed player can spend two years doing nothing but shooting, including shooting freethrows, and get worse at it each year.

At UD he got worse each season from the line. Seriously, if you are an NBA coach/scout evaluating a shooting guard or small forward and he is bricking ft's continually, it tells you way more than you needed to know. Those players should literally be able to shoot 70% with a blindfold on.

At UD he got worse each season from the line. Seriously, if you are an NBA coach/scout evaluating a shooting guard or small forward and he is bricking ft's continually, it tells you way more than you needed to know. Those players should literally be able to shoot 70% with a blindfold on.
Because we believe that it is flat out easy for everyone to shoot a basketball, or hit a baseball or sink a 6 foot putt.

Chris is not the first big man who has trouble with the coordination aspect of basketball. Most post players are lousy free throw shooters from Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Shaq to Dwight Howard.

Often the big size of muscle makes it very difficult to control very small precise motors movements. Brian Roberts shoots so much better because he is not bulked like Chris.

But in the NBA game, CW is not a post player. He's a perimeter player. Therefore, until he does get better at it he's most likely not an NBA player.

I have to disagree with you on this point. The NBA and basketball in general is becoming less and less defined by position. That is why a 6'8" Dejuan Blair can play center for the spurs and Kevin Durant plays shooting guard / small forward at 6'10". In the NBA it isn't your size that determines position, its your skills.
Here is a player description from espn's john hollinger.

+ Undersized 4 with boundless energy. Great rebounder who flies off floor.
+ Mainly a dunker on offense. Has no post game at all and is a weak outside shooter.
+ Competes on defense but struggles defending post. Blocks shots but fouls often.

That description belonged to a certain Kenneth Faried who is the starting power forward for the Denver Nuggets. The holes that Faried has in his game are near identical to the ones in Chris Wrights. CW can carve himself a niche in the NBA with the game he has if he falls to the right team, or the right coach, or the right system.
And if he does some day have an epiphany and suddenly develops perimeter shooting or a handle, forget about just getting into the NBA either one of those things would turn him into a starter.

Kennith Faried shoots 56% from the floor and 63% from the ft line(73% his last month).

Faried has no jumper at all. His FG % is from dunks. The comparison to Wright is legit, except Faried has a motor that is very very rare. Chris plays hard, but doesn't have the motor like Kenneth.

I agree the Denver player is special. So if Kenneth went down with a knee, Denver would replace him with CW?

I think the main draw for a player in CW's position is a backup on a rebuilding team (like GSW was), but in a smaller market (Toronto) and a tight budget. He may have his best shot at the NBA as we speak.

Here's Chris's current profile (from me):

*great team guy
*tremendous athlete
*stong motor
*exciting finisher at the rim
*disruptive on defense (for both teams)
*inconsistent shooter
*POOR ft shooter
*opportunistic rebounder
*lacks instinctive court movement and passing
*limited handle

That's just being honest. I hope he gets a 2 year guaranteed deal this year.

Chris has an athletic body and strength that many many NBA players would have trouble matching regardless of size. MY point is that the huge strength in his muscles makes it difficult for him to control the smaller muscles. This is a problem for many many players of size and more importantly of strength.

So his incredible athletic body and talents get him noticed by the NBA. But that strength is a huge weakness when it comes to the refined motor skills, no matter how hard he works.

Many long golf hitters can't putt no matter how hard they work at it. Many NFL players can't play in the NBA. To get in the league you have to have the right combination. Chris has tried and worked at it as hard as anyone. I guarantee you that.

The thing is, Faried isn't really appreciated by the Nuggets new front office. They are looking to make this team more half-court offense oriented, which Faried does not excel in. Faried is very very raw offensively, even more so than Chris. Because of this, rumors are they are looking to trade him for the right price and if they don't, he'll most likely be coming off the bench next year. Chris has better shooting ability than Faried and he handles the ball better as well.

If Chris would've stayed strictly a post player in college and concentrated more on playing the post and being a prolific rebounder like Faried (who is the all time leader in rebounds in D-1 college), would he now have a better chance at sticking in the NBA? This is an honest question. We have all seen him work hard on his perimeter shooting and ball handling skills, but I just am not sure he will ever be good enough at those skills to play in the League. I am starting to think had he focused on being a top notch post player, even at only 6'8, with his athleticism he could've had an even better college career and put himself in better position at the next level. If he hung around the basket like Faried does, and didn't bother with the perimeter, I could see him having a similar kind of FG % as Faried.

Chris really played well last night against the Spurs. 13 points and several hustle plays. 6 of 8 from the field. The Raptors blog is raving about him even stating he has a good shot of making the team.www.raptorshq.com.

"Ross finished with only nine points and two assists in this one, shooting 33 per cent, and was pretty invisible through the bulk of the match. He failed to collect a rebound, and frankly, didn't look like as good of an NBA wing prospect as teammate Chris Wright, who was all over the court in the second half during Toronto's futile final comeback attempt."

and

"As noted, Chris Wright stood out and I'd like to see him take on an Alan Anderson type roll for the team next year, roster space provided."

"Most impressive, however, was Chris Wright. Wright went 6-8 from the field, finishing with 13 points, and was a big part of the Raptors' 15-4 run that blew the game wide open early in the fourth.

Wright, who also looked good against the Heat on Saturday, brought plenty of energy to the floor, and varied his game nicely. He hit shots from mid-range, put the ball on the deck and drove, and cut well off the ball.

He also made a great play on San Antonio's Marcus Denmon, stealing the ball and dunking in transition. (Click "Right Place, Wright Time Video to the right.) At this stage Wright looks like a guy who could contribute in a regular-season Raptors rotation, with his athleticism and energy. He's definitely a player to keep an eye on as the Raptors move forward in Vegas."

The article raises the possibility that Linas Kleiza might get "amnesteyed". Consider it done:

CW gets mentioned in a Raptor's article on TSN:

http://www.tsn.ca/nba/story/?id=428226

"Ujiri indicated that the team may have interest in adding another wing player but would likely address that need with an inexpensive training camp invitee. One option could be athletic forward Chris Wright, who was a member of the Raptors' Summer League team and attended camp with the team last season."

Far from certain, but that sounds positive for CW.

I had no idea that Chris Wright had gotten his 3pt % up to 36.6% in the D league, that's not lights out but its respectable enough, if he can bring his FT shooting up to some were around 70% or 75% he could actually be a legit offensive player at the next level as opposed to just and energy and rebound guy. I would almost prefer that his FT shooting improved rather than his 3pt shooting because I don't see him ever being a 3pt shooter in the NBA, but the way he attacks the rim and the paint odds are he will shoot his fair share of FTs.

Not sure, but if he does, CW will be the 2nd Flyer that Daye has bumped from an NBA roster. Chris Johnson was cut from the Grizzlies right after Daye was acquired from the Pistons.

Daye might have been in the deal, but I thought the major factor on the Grizzlies was acquirig Tayshaun Prince.

Austin Daye is at least listed as a PF at 6'11.

Who knows. ESPN had him as a 6'11" PF on the Grizzlies. Presume it's the same dude from Gonzaga.

PF surprised me, he is thin as a rail.

He's still got to make freethrows to complete the package. He is capable of solving that 63% career pro number. Hopefully this is his breakthrough season.

These non-guaranteed contracts simply define the Raptors liability in case of injury, and exit groundrules should he not make the club. Also define the salary if he makes the club. He is still not guaranteed anything except the camp invitation that was described in an unofficial news rag posted by Lifelong Flyer Fan in post #250.

Not trying to kill the buzz, but the announcement we all want is yet to be determined. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

San Diego, what you stated is absolutely true indeed----BUT, he can't make the team without this step (one of many he's made over the past several years) towards a guaranteed spot and contract.

I love this kid----I'm sure he isn't perfect---but I don't know that I've ever heard or read anything about him that didn't make me proud to know that he wore a University of Dayton basketball uniform!

Go get'em CW----

We all know what a terrific "glue" guy CW is on the team and the bench. Great acceptance by his teammates.

However, Coach Casey has some real business decisions to make. It is stated in the narrative that the last roster spot is likely between Wright (SF), Carlos Morais (SG), and
Julyan Stone (PG).

What is the Raptors greatest need? It appears that all 3 would be minimum wage players.

Wright = the 5th SF on the roster.
Stone = the 4th PG on the roster.
Morais = the 3rd SG on the roster.

It appears likely that the two players out would be candidates for the swing shift in NBADL similar to what Chris went through with Golden State.

It's staggering to realize that the cheapest guy is still making a half million/season.

I don't know who the other two players are and don't really feel like looking them up. I think that something that will help favor Wright is that he can play a little PF as well. Now can Stone play SG, or Marais play either PG or SF?

We all know that Chris Wright can play a little defense, so that will also work into his favor.

According to the Toronto roster, CW has grown an inch and one half since UD. Tipping the tape at 6'9" now.

I've watched Stone the last few years with the Nuggets, he is a PG all the way, can't shoot but plays tremendous defense. I know Masai Ujiri absolutely loves him, which makes me worried about Chris's spot on the team.

That's a very compelling argument for Stone. Equally compelling for Morais is the Coach's
problem of going into the season with only 2 shooting guards. I hope it breaks well for Chris, but I have a feeling the Raptors will be watching the waiver wire very closely for a cap-friendly SG.

If Stone is a PG he isn't making the team. They have 3 already in Lowery, Augustin and Buyrucks. I don't know of any team that keeps 4 pg's.

It would seem that Stone would be the odd man out when it comes to pure talent and tenure. But this is about the time the CFO starts looking hard at salaries. The insurance player on the bench might need to be in the minimum salary range. The rich franchises don't have to worry about that as much.

For example at SF there is Gay, Fields, and Novak making $28M this season. Then you have Acy and Wright each under $1M. Just saying there are lots of moving parts. Raptors are still thin at SG.

Wright got 2 mop-up minutes and Stone played 24 minutes tonight. Stone is getting the roster spot

I don't think Wright was competing against Stone. He has had to beat out Quincy Acy at the small forward slot all along. I don't think they ever intended to keep 5 small forwards.

Still can be moving parts before it's over.

Raptors win another game against the Knicks. CW had a frantic 7 minutes on the court with 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls.

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400491577

One interesting development is the Raptors are not playing Steve Novak who has a sizeable contract as a 3 pt specialist. Either they are eyeing his large contract, or they know what he has to offer on the court and don't need to see him play. IMO they are hoping CW will give them enough reasons to keep him on the team. So far it's a mixed bag.

Why does this link show Chris Wrights salary for 2014?

http://espn.go.com/nba/team/roster/_...oronto-raptors

Notice that Carlos Morais and Jonas Valanciunas show no salary....
CW listed at what I believe to be league minimum at: $473,604

Did he make the team? Just asking, not implying anything....

That's likely what he would make IF he makes the team by beating out Quincy Acy, or the Raptors decide Steve Novak is too expensive for bench relief, or they decide that 4 pgs are 1 too many, or ..........

IMO Chris has to give them a few solid reasons to make one of the above decision in his favor.

NBA is right up against the stops as far as final rosters. Should know something very soon. CW had a quiet 3 minutes last night. There is a teaser headline for ESPN subcribers (not me) which may give some Raptor clues if any poster out there has access:

DDN reporting in a small blurb on page 1 of sports section that CW was released from the Raptors yesterday...hopefully someone picks him up. I don't get it; from the sounds of it, he did everything asked of him from the Raptors last year....

Since CW played 3 minutes in a game last night that ended at 9:30p, he must have been cut immediately after. Chris has been the challenger trying to claim a spot on every team that has given him a shot. His stats for the most part, except for that breakout last game he had with GSW, have been a bit pedestrian. Like they say, you have to knock out the champ. It's not often you beat him with style points.

It would seem on the surface that he would be a lock for the Bakersfield Jam of NBADL. But here's where it gets dicey. That franchise, unlike others, is the farm team for 4 NBA teams collectively, not just the Toronto Raptors. So one would think that each of the 4 parent teams would be targeting players for that roster. The competition for jobs never ends.

If I were CW, I'd understand the NBA is a pipe dream at this point and go to Europe to make some cash and hone his skills. He can improve his game over there and give the NBA another shot in a few years.

Per the Raptors' website, it's official - CW's out. But they didn't give him much of a chance this preseason, with only 26 minutes in 5 games.

IMHO, he needs to follow the B-Rob model by going to Europe, working on his weaknesses, and then coming back to give it another go. He needs to get away from where, offensively, he only needs to pass, run, & dunk, and get into an environment where he can develop a decent mid-range jumper and some ballhandling skills.

Good luck, C-Dub. Hope to see you back to stay at some point.

D League is better competition than Europe, and closer to home.
I would be very surprised if this NBA season ends before CW's no. is called.

Actually Chris has had a lot of exposure before his 25 minutes on the Raptors game floor. He has starred for the Maine Redclaws, the Dakota Wizards, GSW, other tryouts, and the whole pre-season with the Raptors in front of the coaches constantly. Chris is a known product in NBA circles right now. He just needs to have that team that has a special need, due to injury or whatever, collide with his availability.

He has expressed that desire and passion to play in the NBA and he is very young still. The money he has made to-date is more than adequate to allow him to pursue that dream. For CW, going to Europe instead of the NBADL might not be the best move yet. And in fact might feel like a step backwards---money aside.

The "Europe" question for C-Dub is, would he expand his skill set to minimize his weaknesses, or lose the strengths he has in the process of trying to get better all-around? Right now, a team would be interested in him if they needed athleticism at the wing, all-out hustle all over the court, and tough D on guys who are between @ 6'5" & 6'10". Anyone looking for shooting &/or ball-handling in a wing won't be looking at/for him, and unless he decides to go "Rodman", he's too small to play the post in The Show. I guess I figured Europe would be a place for him to round-out his game, as compared to what he's been able to do in the D-League.

That's a fair question because not every NBADL nor Euro coach is a good teacher. But a good agent can find the right fit for Chris, no matter which side of the Atlantic. Europe in a good scenario can be a place to hone skills, but it can also be a place to waste a year in the wrong situation. (eg, bad franchise, language barrier, etc.) His agent seems to have some contacts to have gotten the opportunities he has had so far. I wouldn't want to be locked into a European contract when that special NBA need arose in mid-season. That happened to some NBA players during the lockout when they needed money and signed up with Chinese teams only to be handcuffed when the lockout ended.

I don't think Chris is hurting for income since he's had a recent contract for over a half million, so he can be more patient stateside than the guys just graduating from college.

The Raptors also finalized their opening-night roster on the weekend, keeping guard Julyan Stone and releasing Chris Wright and Carlos Morais. Stone, who played with the Denver Nuggets last season, won the final roster spot because of his versatility.

“He gives us a different defender at the point guard position,” said Casey. “He can guard the quick guys, he can guard the big guards. It gives you another tool in the toolbox.”

Down to the last cut. Honestly, I think this is progress on Chris's part, being just a click short.

Looking now for some good news on where he goes next.

It looks like there are some teams that only have 14 or less.

Boston Celtics
Chicago Bulls
Golden State Warriors
Memphis Grizzlies
Oklahoma City Thunder
Phoenix Suns
San Antonio Spurs

In theory any of these teams could offer either CJ or CW a job.

Like I stated above, Masai Ujiri loves Stone and has had a working relationship with him for a few years now. This is one of those cases where the GM made the call, no matter what the coaching staff may or may not have publicly said. Chris was in an uphill battle for that final roster spot with Stone involved and Masai making the final call. No surprise here.

Nice story about Chris in Maine. They are happy to have the "Dayton University" product back with them again.
