2 of Georgetown's players, Joshua Smith, a big man, and Jabril Trawick, a guard/small forward, did not play though, not sure why, I think they are having academic difficulties. So, Georgetown hardly had any inside game at all. Smith was averaging 12 and 3. Trawick was averaging 7 and 3.
Georgetown was on fire with their outside shooting in the first half. In the second half, X stepped up their perimeter defense. I think Georgetown played a zone defense for about the first 30-35 minutes of the game, not sure if they normally play zone, they may have played zone since 2 of their guys did not play, so X was having trouble speeding up the game in the second half to try and make a comeback.
X shot very well from the outside in the second half, eventually forcing Georgetown to abandon their zone defense with 5 or 10 minutes left in the game.
So, in the 2nd half, Mack had X full court press Georgetown to try to speed up the game, and that did work very well, X got a few turnovers off of the press.
Anyway, a great job of coaching by Mack to adjust his defense, and a very nice win for X. X won 80-67.

I only want details when they lose.

Results for Thursday, Jan 16
There were no A-10 games scheduled this evening, nor are there any tomorrow evening.

Murray St (10-7) won a close one at Eastern Illinois (5-12), 70-66.
St Francis (NY) (11-7) with a win at Central Connecticut (4-12), 76-66.
St francis (PA) (3-13) lost at Robert Morris (8-10), 68-73
USC (9-8) was no match for Utah (13-4), losing in Salt Lake City 66-84.
IPFW (15-5) picks up a road win at Denver (7-10), 67-64.

That USC loss is starting to look worse than the Illinois St loss. They got hammered by Utah.

Conversely, our home court victories over IPFW (RPI 148), St Francis (NY) (RPI 136), and Iona (RPI 149) are looking better all the time. Road wins are money in the bank: Georgia Tech (RPI 134), and Ole Miss (RPI 72), plus neutral court wins over Cal (RPI 29) and Gonzaga (RPI 25).
The next two games are huge, RPI wise: at Richmond (RPI 70) and vs VCU (RPI 40). The Flyers need to win at least one of those to stay on the right side of the bubble.
The only RPI anchor (sub 200) left on our schedule is Duquesne (RPI 282).

I'm not great at math, but according to my calculations, USC has lost its last 4 games by an average of 22.75 points per game...

Teamrankings.com predicts they win a total of 12 games this season. Ouch. Unbelievably they are 2-0 against teams from Ohio.

You're probably confusing Billy with his older brother Jimmy. I went to the Canisius Mens BB site to see Billy's bio, & it mentions that Jimmy played for URI from 2005-09.
...though Billy IS on his 5th school since 8th grade (3 yrs in HS, a year at a Prep, went to UVA but never played, then URI until they fired Jim Sr., and now Canisius - gesundheit).

Not that their record was any good before beating us this year but didn't the wheels fall completely off after beating us last year? Both OT losses.

Georgetown (The potential 4th at large from the NEW big east) going down to 10-7 Seton Hall).
Their RPI was 50 going into this game. Seton Hall was 141. 3 Top 50 NBE teams. Villanova, X, Creighton. 5 A 10 teams.

Seton Hall beats Georgetown at Georgetown, 67-57. Georgetown has lost 3 of their last 4 NBE games. I'd say this loss puts them on the wrong side of the bubble.

USC getting hammered by Colorado. Home loss versus USC worse than road at Illinois St. Both will end season between 125-175 RPI. Let's hope both above 150.

RI fouls a Mason player making a 3-point attempt and Mason makes all 3 FTs to tie the game but then Mason fouls a RI player with less than a second to go who makes both FTs to win the game. Wild.

The Ohio State Buckeyes lost at Nebraska tonight. That is 4 losses in a row for the #17 Bucks, they may drop out of the rankings as a result.

I doubt it. They play such great competition.
Maybe (horrors) 24.....or even (gasp) 25. After all, if Duke can go into a swoon, maybe it's the latest thing.

Ohio State's terrible offense is finally exposed. You just can't run an efficient offense where BOTH starting guards can't score. I don't understand how it took this long for everyone to figure out.

Sound familiar? From guess who?
“We need consistency. When we play ourselves back into it, when something doesn’t go well, I think the thing I see the most is we’re not able to answer the call. We’ve got to have some mental toughness to make the next play. Right now, we’re clinging on the mistakes. You’ve got to play forward.”
“They did a good job of putting their heads down and driving the basketball. They did a good job of finishing,”
“We got the ball to the rim and they wouldn’t go in for us. As I told the guys, we have to finish through contact.”

Then there's Creighton...
...who put on an amazing shooting display in destroying #4 Villanova in Philly. Made their first 7 shots of the game, all threes. Built lead to FORTY ONE points by opening 2nd half on a 36-9 run.
Who, 20...15 years ago, would've thought Creighton's program would be so so far beyond the University of Dayton?

Creighton has some shooters and they play a tough "in-the-paint" defense. A lot of these teams have outstanding athletes that can't shoot a 17 foot jump shot. So you just throw a zone at them and watch them crumble.

RPI Forecast:
ISU - 120
USC - 144
Dayton is predicted to be at 49 which is less important than the RPI's of who they played:
Top 25: 2-2
Top 50: 4-4
Top 100: 8-7
IMHO - that puts us right on the bubble needing 1-2 A10 tourney wins to move us in.

Lot of games left but as of today, is Ohio St in or out?
RPI - #15
vs top 25: 0-2
vs top 50: 1-3
They really haven't beat anyone of note. I don't know how they have a #15 RPI ranking.

Because they have a bunch of wins (over half) that are in the Top 100. And have only played 2 teams outside the Top 200. Conversely, UD has played 5 teams outside the Top 200, and only about 23% of our wins are against the Top 100. Plus we have two (2) 100+ losses while OSU has none.
I was thinking the same thing, though - they really don't have any wins that standout on a resume.
But to even think that they would be "out" right now is kind of silly.
When it's all said and done, I see OSU landing somewhere between a 6 and 9 seed.

You are probably right but I wouldn't bet on it. They will have there opportunities to prove themselves but they have to win some of those. I am actually a fan of OSU because I had one daughter graduate and another one there now but they are being exposed. Not much depth there. No go to guy. Weak in the post. Would be a real interesting matchup for the Flyers.

We just need to hire a coach who has an All-American son who will pass up the NBA to continue to play for his dad. Let's see how they are after he is gone. They weren't any better than we were until McDermott got there. They had records of 19-14 and 18-16 in 10-11 and 09-10. Their last NCAA before his arrival was 06-07, and they lost in the first round. Our record for the 10 years or so before McDermott's arrival was just as good as theirs. They made the NBE because their President is on the Marquette Board of Regents and is in the "Boy's Club."

Same was said about X: Let's see how they do now when Matta leaves, when Miller leaves...they just keep on a rollin'!
There's more to that team than McDermott. Agree, they have 4 seniors (I believe), but there's 400% more reason for optimism at Creighton than at 300 College Park.

There's more to that team than McDermott. Agree, they have 4 seniors (I believe), but there's 400% more reason for optimism at Creighton than at 300 College Park.
|
Not sure who said that, but it is not relevant because a coach is not a player. We are talking a player better than UD has seen since Chapman or probably May. The point is that there is not a great deal more to that team than McDermott. We cannot prove it this year, but see what happens when he is gone.
By the way Creighton beat the same Cal team we beat and lost to GW at home and is not ranked, so what was the big deal until last night.

Now repeat after me. Conference performance determines eligibility for post season play. Non-conference performance provides an excuse for poor conference results.

This is plain silly. If the Flyers were 3-12 in the OOC it wouldn't matter what their conference record was. All games count.

LaDontae Henton with 19 and 6 in Saturday's win over Creighton...and 14 pts against Butler tonight. While Marquette and Gtown are busy making NIT travel plans, Providence appears to be the 4th-best team in the NBE.

I caught most of the game. It didn't even look like Butler.
They missed more fairly open 3's than I could count.

Butler is simply not the same team without Stevens. They played poor defense and their offense was very tentative - no one attacked the basket. They are a mere remnant of their NCAA final teams.

A-10 Biggies
Nice win for Georgia Tech on the road at Boston College last night 68-60. BG helped the Flyers with that one. For the sake of competition in the A-10 three results are important tonight. UD over VCU; Richmond at home over UMASS and the Bonnies at home over LaSalle. These unbeaten teams can run away and hide if they win on the road.

Lasalle is favored by 3 at St. Bonaventure tonight.
Random thoughts:
-Huggins and WVU are not projecting to make the NCAA tournament again, that would be back to back misses, that would be the first time that has happened since his first 2 years at UC.
-Pat Knight and Lamar are 1-17 right now. Lamar finished 3-28 last year.
- Temple is 5-12 and 0-6 in the AAC right now, what in the world happened to Temple?
-Aaric Murray averaging 22.9 ppg at Texas Southern, good for #4 in the country
-Billy Baron averaging 23.1 ppg at Canisius, good for #3 in the country
-Doug McDermott averaging 24.8 ppg at Creighton, good for #2 in the country

Last night's action.
Games of note for Thursday, Jan 23.
Flyer opponents go 2-2 on the evening:
Tennessee Tech (10-11) lost at Murray State (11-8), 53-92.
St. Francis (NY) (12-8) lost at Fairleigh-Dickinson (7-12),85-86.
Mount St. Mary's (7-11) won at St. Francis (PA) (3-15), 83-77.
San Diego (11-10) lost at Gonzaga (17-3), 56-59.
In Big 10 action, #17 OSU (16-4) pulled out of their tailspin long enough to hand visiting Illinois (13-7) their fifth straight loss, 62-55.
In tonight's game, Iona (9-8) hosts Quinnipiac (11-6).
Edit : Iona with the easy win.

LaSalle has done what we did not, settled down and not lost their poise and confidense. They have cut it to 43-40 with 15 to go.
Meanwhile Mason it giving GW all they can handle

GT loses in OT at NC State.
If you think our streak of losing at X is bad, Wake Forest lost at NC yesterday. It is the 57th straight loss. WF has never won at NC.

I think you are referring to Clemson. Clemson lost at North Carolina last night, that's 57 losses in a row at North Carolina. Clemson has never won at North Carolina.
That makes the UD streak vs. Xavier in Cincinnati look puny. Poor Brad Brownell.

Baylor continues to fade in conference
In the only game involving a Flyer opponent this evening,
"Juwan Staten scored 15 points, including the game-winning layup, to lead West Virginia past Baylor 66-64."
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400507021
Baylor now 1-6 in the Big 12.

Baylor was behind all game but held West Virginia scoreless for almost the last 5 minutes before Staten made a reverse layup with 3 seconds to go. What was amazing was Baylor then hit a 3 but it was a fraction of a second too late after the officials spent some time examining it. Wanted Baylor to win this one at home.

A-10 Update
The best thing about this season as a college basketball fan is the marked improvement of the Atlantic Ten Conference. Who would have expected this with the loss of Temple, Xavier and Butler? But improve it has. Barring injury, Saint Louis is marching toward a regular season A-10 championship. UMASS, VCU and GW look to be NCAA "At Large" locks with Richmond making a strong argument for inclusion. An upset of SLU on the road tonight would improve the Spider's status. St Joseph's and LaSalle are riding that Philly pride and are fighting to move to the upper tier. The Bonnies, Rhode Island and Duquesne are rebuilding with gusto and have been surprisingly competitive. Dayton has been the major underachiever following a distinguished non-conference run. UD may win it's first A-10 award in some time if the league
would only initiate an award for the most schizophrenic team. Fordham remains the team most likely to be replaced by the Commissioner as member of the A-10 and George Mason
remembers the good old days of Colonial Athletic conference afiliation.

Sounds like FoxSports1's worst fear in re the NBE has a chance to be a reality - Creighton vs. Providence for the championship @ MSG. That'd put, what, @ 8,000 butts in the seats? Nothing against the teams themselves. I wish our Flyers were doing that well. But that matchup sure wouldn't draw like Syracuse-Georgetown used to.

There's just no way I watch Creighton-Providence on TV. Won't happen. Period. I wouldn't make a point of sitting down to watch Syracuse-Georgetown either, but I would probably check in on the score....I might have even stayed with the game through a commercial break.

Mason giving SLU all they can handle on the river. Mason down 1 just before half.

I was really, really impressed with Seton Hall's hustle and good attitude, their entire team was focused and ready to play hard. Great, great job by their coach Kevin Willard having his guys ready to play hard from the opening tip. Every single one of their guys hustled and played hard. They outhustled and outworked Xavier. I could tell from the opening tip that Seton Hall came ready to play today. Xavier did not come ready to play. Yes, Xavier hustled and played hard, but Seton Hall definitely hustled more and played harder. It is a rarity seeing Xavier lose at home.
Seton Hall is a pretty good team IMO, I'm surprised that they don't have a better record. #23 Fuquan Edwin is a very good player, he's a good outside shooter, and he's drives to the basket well. He had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
And the other thing was that Seton Hall played quite a bit of zone defense today. They switched back and forth between zone and man to man for the entire game to keep Xavier off balance. Seton Hall also played a light pressure full court press for a lot of the game.
Why can't UD mix in more zone and at least light full court pressure every now and then?
That loss ends Xavier's 13 game home winning streak.

SLU wins in OT 87-81. Would have liked to see Mason win, but I'd rather play them on Wednesday coming off a loss than a win.

The Hall was also missing one of their big scorers, Brian Oliver. Good win for the boys from South Orange!

A win is a win, and I'll take them all. GMU executed extremely well on offense, and played a lot of zone.

Why would we ever play zone, even for a change of pace?

Yeah, I'm an a-hole Xavier fan too. I'm a fan of both teams. I was born and raised in the Dayton area, I have some close friends down here in Cincinnati that are all X fans, and I go to the X games with them. Almost all of them very much look down on Dayton as being an inferior program. They sort of look at UD as being X's little brother.
It just drives me a lot crazy that UD can't do better.
I mean I went to the X vs. Georgetown game earlier in the year, and the Cintas Center wasn't even sold out, I bet there were maybe as many as 2k or 3k empty seats. And again, this is for a marquee, big name opponent like Georgetown. You know, that was the first time X, since becoming a member of the NBE, played Georgetown at the Cintas Center. That game should have been an EASY sellout. It just makes me sick seeing all the support UD gets, but UD just can't get over the hump. It's very depressing for me.
X fans just sort of expect X to be good every single year, it's almost like they just take it for granted that X will be good every single year. Meanwhile, an hour north, you've got ole UD having to struggle for every single bit of success that they can get. I just don't understand what the problem is.

Fair enough. I was never a fan of X growing up, I became a X fan when I moved down here.
I don't know what UD's problem is, I just think UD fans are insulated from the outside world. UD fans are so used to getting 12k or 13k fans/game, UD fans are so used to the program being mediocre, UD fans are so used to having the program having all the resources that it needs, that IMO UD fans don't realize that they should be screaming at the top of their lungs demanding more.
The ROI for the UD program is pathetic IMO.

I've never heard any one "admit" being a FAN of UD & X.
Honestly, you sound more like an X fan (apologist for there Seton Hall loss at home, etc.) in your X basketball posts than you do a UD FAN. I don't know of any UD FANS that attend Xavier basketball games on a regular basis---again, not any UD FANS that I personally know or hear about! I hope you enjoy the Cintas...
Seems that "you" also look down at UD as an inferior basketball program, at least from your posts.....and we are on most mens basketball (ONLY WAY) levels over the past 25 years. I understand X FANS feeling that way and expressing that opinion!
It's probably been pretty easy to "become" and X fan when you moved to Cincy and started attending there games, listening to your buddies talk about the "little brother" program up north and all, cheering for a winner and all. Me, can't imagine and it's almost inconceivable to imagine the UD fans that I know "becoming" X fans......but maybe I'm just like that?
Anyway, not sure why you spend all the time you do on a UD message board but some of what you've said on a number of topics makes sense now----being that you live in Cincy and are an X fan too!
With the animosity between these 2 programs over the years, have to believe it's hard to straddle the "fence" when it comes time to talk about X and UD in the same breath....again, that might be only me.....do you have a Xavier sweatshirt that you wear to all the games........what have you worn to the UD X games in the cintas?
Go Flyers!

So nice having an X fan on board, telling us what we should do . . .
