Kentucky BLOWS OUT Kansas. Too early to know if KU is overrated or if Kentucky will play that kind of defense all year, but it can't feel good for the rest of the SEC to watch that.
And in mid-major news, Northeastern wins 76-73 @ Florida State a night after Winthrop went on the road and beat Clemson. Not a great start for the ACC.... aside from Duke.

Davidson looked very good last night against a weak team. We will see how Saturday goes at North Carolina.

Yes, but rankings at this point mean little. I will grant that Miami had a big win over Florida, but UMass, Winthrop, and Northeastern all have wins over the ACC.
I think the ACC is setting itself up for another year where they get 4-5 teams in instead of the 7-8 they used to get. It's very top heavy among Duke, UNC, Louisville, UVa, and Syracuse. And frankly, UNC should not be in the tournament with the academic scandal they have going on there right now.

Every league has their bad teams. You cannot judge the Big10 by Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, PennSt and Iowa or the PAC12 by Arizona State, Washington St, SCal and Washington.
With Louisville joining the ACC this year, they will get at least 6. I hope we get 5 in the A10.
Bottom line, I was stating facts to clarify your bad start for the ACC.

Bucknell had Villanova tied with under a minute left and lost 72-65.
SMU was beating Indiana well into the 2nd half before losing by 6.
Cal upset #23 Syracuse 73-59.
Alabama beat Southern Miss 81-67, so Anthony Grant's team has started 3-0.

Disagree. Returning a lot from a team that just missed the NCAA but adding more with some really high profile transfers. Having a great coach is a factor, sure, but they have top 25 talent for sure. Tough start though against some good teams.

He wasnt going to be eligible. This is what happens when you go to a fake school run by Deion Sanders.

Davidson down to North Carolina at the half 46-34. They were in it early but missed most shots in the last 10 minutes. Davidson will compete in the A10 this year.
Commish McGlade was on at halftime. She made mention of the Volleyball Championships being at Dayton University this weekend. You are the friggin' head of the league and do not know the correct names?

90-72 NC over Davidson. Davidson competed when the threes dropped but they could not compete with NC's size or transition points. Davidson shot 36 threes.
How did UD and Ohio miss out on Peyton Aldridge, the 6'7" frosh for Davidson who is from Warren, Ohio. He had 25 pts and 6 rebounds on 6-10 threes.

I definitely think it should be noted that Marquette lost to a team from Omaha not named Creighton. And it should be noted that 97 points were scored against Marquette by the University of Nebraska-Omaha. You might also note this was a home game for Marquette. I wouldn't poke fun, but they asked for it. Jerks.

A couple others I would consider notable:
Providence 75, Notre Dame 74... LaDontae Henton with 38 points, including their last 7 points of the game.
Towson 79, Monmouth 75 in OT... Gavs with 8 points, 5 rebounds in 23 minutes.
Cincinnati 54 v. Eastern Illinois 49
SLU losing to TAMU-CC... have to think that program is going to have multiple years of rebuilding to do once they come to their senses and get rid of Jim Crews.

Others that I liked personally:
(6) Louisville 87 v. Savannah St. 26 - Louisville led 29-0 with 4:02 left in the first half before Sav St. finally made a free throw. With 1:26 left in the first half, Sav St. made their first field goal to make it 37-5.
E. Washington 88 @ Indiana 86 - Crean's seat is heating up, much like the bus to Tank's.
Tulsa 53, Auburn 35 in Las Vegas at an event that I'm going to assume by this matchup is called "Battle of the Power 5 Disgraced Coaches."

Yeah, I saw that score and thought maybe NJIT had put together a decent team this year.
Nope, they're now 1-4.

Maybe my childhood dream of being IU's bball coach is still in reach.

I think somebody else already mentioned this, but I imagine that they would be interested in Archie. I guess that it would probably be pretty difficult to match what they offer in terms of money.
Crean: this is his 7th year, no postseason in years 1-3, Sweet 16 in years 4 and 5, no postseason last year. He took over for Kelvin Sampson.
I don't think they will fire him after this year, but I suppose that might depend on how well they do this year.

I don't think Archie would be high on IU's list. They view themselves as on par with Kentucky in terms of basketball heritage, and I don't think they would go in for giving the keys to the kingdom to someone with as short a track record as Archie. They would be looking for a proven winner.

Well ok, but suppose that UD goes to the round of 32 or better this year, IMO, Archie will be pretty doggone hot at that point and will be mentioned for just about every job out there.
Even just getting back to the NCAA tournament this year will make him pretty hot.

Totally agree, but I think Indiana believes itself to be "royalty". Like, worthy of poaching Brad Stevens from the Celtics type-royalty.

Henton is in the top 15 All time scoring for Providence. He'll finish top ten easy. Maybe top 5. I can't imagine him not having similar success at UD. We all love Pierre, but Henton is a stud who can give you an efficient 38 points if you need it with defenders draped all over him. I don't know that Dayton has that guy. True Team and all of that, but it is nice to have the best player on the court in any given matchup. He's pretty much unstoppable.

I don't think they can afford to fire Crean, much less pay Archie Miller.
Buyout if they fire Crean:
In 2014 - $14 M
In 2015 - $12 M
In 2016 - $7.5 M
In 2017 - $4 M
2018-2020- $1M

Don't kid yourself. That $ wouldn't be coming out of the IU budget. I'd bet quite a few deep-pocketed boosters would pay not to watch The Crean Face for 7 more years.

Yes, after further thought, I agree, I don't think IU is a threat to poach Archie, both Crean and Sampson had longer track records than Archie.

I was thinking they could fire him after two sub-par seasons in a row, sort of like UK did with Gillispie, but with Gillispie there were the extenuating circumstances with Gillispie never signing a contract, and I think that may have sort of given UK a cheaper way out.

I think after 2015, 12.5 million buyout isn't that prohibitive at all with boosters willing to pay. But to pay double that to fire him before 2015 seems unlikely.

I would take the Henton over Pierre trade every day of the week. Pierre is a nice player, but not even in the same stratosphere as Henton. He can score, but he also absolutely kills the boards. Swampy, I know you are a fan. I wasn't jabbing at you, but those who have argued in the past that Henton wouldn't be nearly as productive at UD because he would have a hard time getting off the bench (even after the kid was ripping up the BE - the real BE - as a freshmen).

Dee Davis is really bad despite the Brian Snow hype. It doesn't help having Mack as a coach either.

Ole Miss beats Creighton by 8. Nice to see Ole Miss get the victory.
Creighton ranked 23 by the AP was insane, just because they beat Oklahoma in a HOME game. Creighton is like 200 RPI and 50 kenpom.

Final: WKU 67, Marshall 66 in OT. Sure looks like a basketball score. Actually I watched some of that game and it was very entertaining. WKU's coach has some big ones - went for the two point conversion in OT and made it.

Agree, longtime. It made for a good day of sports going between the WKU/Marshall football game and the Kansas/Tenn and Butler/Georgetown b-ball games. Followed that with an enjoyable UTEP game, and then several others. The couch felt good and I could get used to days like today.

Seems like a rough start for OP and DePaul.
Only won their season opener at home vs. UIC by 1.
Lost by 12 at home to LeHigh.
He got a 7 year deal initially, this is his 5th year.
Wonder if he regrets leaving Clemson.

Ole Miss faces Cincinnati tonight at my local juco gym (Niceville, FL). $15 court side tickets to watch Andy Kennedy and Mick Cronin stare each other down. And watch a bball game.

Disagree, he was doing very well at Clemson, other than not being able to win in the NCAA tournament, I think Clemson was probably very happy with him.
He did better there than Brad Brownell has done, and they just gave Brownell an extension.

VCU down 12 to Old Dominion with 8 minutes to go. I thought VCU was the class of the A-10, shows how much I know.
We cannot afford for the A-10 to continue to have such an awful out-of-conference.

Yeah, but he inherited a rebuilding job from Larry Shyatt, and in his last 3 years, he went to the NCAA tournament. And 3 NIT's in years 2, 3, and 4.
Clemson hadn't been to the NCAA tournament in 5 years, or the NIT in 4 years, before OP took over.
7 years there, 3 NIT's and 3 NCAA's, very, very good considering what he started with.

Yikes, Umass loses to Harvard. Duquesne loses to NJIT. VCU loses to ODU. Seriously, this is really bad for us.
Winning the A-10 is great, but I just want a NCAA bid. We are looking like a 2-3 bid league right now and that is a stretch. A-10 has very few good wins. Right now, we are 0-7 for top 50 wins and just 7-15 top 100, but we have 7 bad losses to 101+. So as many top 100 wins as 101+ losses. This is going to make a NCAA bid more difficult.

Clemson fans down here were sad to see him go and a bit confounded that he chose DePaul. Not sure anyone is nearly as happy with Wright State's old coach. Just a southern perspective for y'all.

Harvard is no slouch anymore, no shame in losing to them, they took down Cincinnati in the NCAA tournament last year.
Maybe UD can schedule a home and home with them.

Poor Fordham. I just was watching the game on the tube that they lost to Maryland Eastern Shore. The little Rose Hill gym was pretty much packed, but I think that was because the Rams footballers had a home playoff game earlier in the afternoon. Back and forth with the GW and Seton Hall game . . . GW's a really decent club. They lost to the Pirates, but they're going to be tougher as the season goes on.

George Mason is not good this year, but hitting a 75-footer at the horn to win is always nice...

Today is turing out to be really bad for the A-10. GW lost to Seton Hall 58-54 at Seton Hall. Both will be bubble teams. A-10 looking really bad in comparison to the Big East. And yes I realize we played this game on the road.
Wow, GW down 2 56-54 and they called a charge on GW with .7 seconds left ...

The way the OOC is going, the A-10 may be lucky to get 3 bids. Flyers need to really roll in conference to make up for the lackluster play of most of the league in to OOC. Quite a bit different than last year.

If I remember correctly, that whole scene four years ago when he left Clemson was bizarre. I think it was announced through texts and Twitter, etc.
I think he also got considerably more from DePaul than the roughly $1.6M he was then making at Clemson. How DePaul can do that is beyond me, given the fact that they can shoot a cannon off at their games and not hurt anybody.
Not a bad strategy, though, on going and trying to rebuild the programs he's done that with - come in, expectations are not great, be paid very good $$ and then keep your eye out for the next one. When it's all said and done, you've made more money than you can possibly spend during the rest of your life and made a name for yourself along the way.

I think we had a buy game with Harvard a few years ago when Roberts was playing.
Last year they were decent, but this is this year. They have played no one good before today and lost to Holy Cross earlier. I would rather play Harvard than Miami.

Disagree again.
Tommy Amaker has the Harvard program rolling, they've been to the NCAA tournament the last three years in a row, and some bracketologists have them making the tournament again this year.
They've been to the round of 32 the last two years.
They would be a solid OOC opponent.

We need the A-10 to step up or we are going to be a 2-3 bid league this year. Right now, A-10 is 10th in RPI and are 0-13 versus top 50 teams. Yikes.
Need some quality wins the next couple of weeks.

I'm sure other leagues are looking forward to poaching 3 or so bids from the A-10 this year. Will probably have to finish second, maybe third to get a bid.

Texas hits a 3 pointer with 3 seconds left to beat Uconn 55-54 ... sigh
Boatright misses free throw with 15 seconds that would have put them up 3.
Uconn was up 51-46 with 2:44 to go and outscored 9-3.

Elon beats Miami Ohio 70-68 on jumper with 1 second to go (was tied 68-68).
So both Miami Ohio and Uconn lose on last second shots.
Umass Lowell beats Boston University 69-59.
Sigh.

Fair enough, I agree that so far Harvard has played a weak schedule, let's revisit this topic in about a month and see what the story is then, they've got some tough opponents, Arizona State, Virginia, and Boston College, coming up here shortly.
And BTW, I reviewed Harvard's performance over the last several years, and in one recent year they finished the regular season with a rpi of 35, and they did NOT get a bid, so they probably should have received one that year too.

Boatright rolled his ankle swiching on a screen on the final play, resulting in an open three:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400585711
". . . It's not clear whether he will miss any games. Boatright emerged from the locker room after the game on crutches with ice on his left ankle.
When asked how he felt, Boatright told ESPN, "It hurts." As to how serious he viewed it, he said to ESPN, "I'm a dawg, I'll be back."
UConn coach Kevin Ollie said during the postgame news conference that Boatright would be assessed but was optimistic.
"We will see but he hates to miss practice," Ollie said. . ."

Wowy wow wow, the Xavier Musketeers fall 73-70 to Long Beach State on a neutral court in California.
They beat LBSU by 23 about 2 weeks ago, on November 18, at the Cintas Center.
Hard to understand how you can beat a team by 23, and then lose to them 2 weeks later.

Sorry I missed that one. How can X ever lose with so many Rivals recruiting stars? They must be getting coached down.

While henton kills it on boards, it turns out we need Pierre's bulk and inside savvy. Pierre is more post up, while Henton slash, drive and threes. Both pl ayers FIT their current systems superbly.
Henton has the nickname edge..... BUCKETS. How can you top that? Love it!

For RPI purposes..... at least G Tech won.
A10 looking bad this year. If somehow UMASS and VCU tank in A10 play, everyone RPI and sos will buck salls.

I said this before. I saw Henton play once. If I had to choose between him and Pierre, I would honestly take Pierre.
Henton appeared to be exclusively an outside shooter, maybe the defense he faced the day I saw him play, took away his dribble drive.
Pierre shoots a better % from 3 and from the field, and he can drive and post up also.
But, Henton's career stats are better, Henton's career 14 ppg and 8 rpg is very impressive.
Henton
14 ppg
8 rpg
1.2 spg
1.3 apg
76% from the ft line
34% from 3
44% from the field
Pierre
10 ppg
5 rpg
0.5 spg
1.8 apg
67% from the ft line
42% from 3
51% from the field

In other news . . .
the A-10 wins!
Siena 67 @ Fordham 69
OOC:
Marist 61 @ Boston College 79
Marygrove (?) 52 @ E Michigan 83
As an aside - grow a pair and start a thread.
Give it a title - like, I don't know, Pierre vs Henton?
It ain't rocket surgery . . .

While I'd love to blame it on Mack, that's a common symptom of having a young team. They blow-out an opponent, get all full of themselves (and face it - when HASN'T _avier been all full of itself, anyway?), then overlook an opponent (in this case, the same one) that has its sights set on an upset.
For a reverse version of that, all you need to do is look back to our own 1983-84 squad. We beat DePaul by 1 on The Shot down here, and then a week or 2 later, we went up to Rosemont and lost by 20. In that case, DePaul ate humble pie in the first game, then got pi$$ed-off and serious for the rematch.
But back to the LBSU/XU result. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys!

They start two seniors, two juniors and a freshman. Jalen Robinson is a 35 year old sophomore.
