Smile Flyers Drop Patriots 4-2

The Dayton Flyers scored three times in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half to hold off the feisty George Mason Patriots 4-2 on a sun-baked Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. UD remains perfect in the A10 at 2-0-0 while improving to 4-7-0 overall. The Patriots fall to 5-5-0 (1-0-0).

The Patriots didn't waste any time causing problems for the Flyers as the match got underway, pushing forward with long balls and doing just enough in the midfield to keep UD off balance. Over the first 15 minutes, the run of play was back and forth with GMU holding the slight edge in overall ball control and Dayton holding an edge in offensive punch. The Flyers had trouble connecting passes and playing with pace, allowing GMU to muck up the central third of the field and turn loose balls into counterattacks.

Dayton picked things up however and eventually got deeper into Mason's back line. Ashley Campbell worked up top on threaded balls down the middle, while Alexis Kiehl worked the flank trying to turn the corner. Libby Leedom and Nicole Waters fed balls to teammates running into free space beyond the center circle. None of it was perfection, but it was just enough to put GMU on their heels as the first half continued.

Kiehl struck first in the 18th minute on an excellent back-line pick-off after Mason played a poor lateral ball across the defense. She walked it in with only the goalkeeper to beat, slotting it to the low post to put UD up 1-0.

Campbell would score her first of two afternoon goals just six minutes later, poking a chip over the goalkeeper exiting her goal mouth to put Dayton up 2-0 and firmly in control.

The two-goal lead was short-lived however. Mason took advantage of loose marking along the left flank, penetrating UD's goal box and shooting a ball past GK Kaelyn Johns for the far-post score that cut the Flyer lead to 2-1 in the 33rd minute.

The Flyers had trouble communicating at times and seeing the open field, needlessly slowing down play when GMU looked flat on their shape and out of position. The remainder of the first half was a work-in-progress even though Dayton continued to be the more dangerous team.

Freshman Beth Kamphaus restored the two-goal lead in the 42nd minute when Leedom's long-range shot bounced off the crossbar. She cleaned up the carom at the six-yard line to put UD up 3-1 and back in the comfort zone heading into halftime.

First half stats favored UD in shots (11-5) and corner kicks (3-1).

As important as the late first half goal was for the Flyers, GMU returned the favor just 37 seconds after intermission when two Dayton players muffed a 50/50 challenge about 40 yards from goal, allowing Alex Myers to tee one up from long range that beat Johns still extended from her goal mouth. While Johns might have been a step or two shallow in her goal box, the weak loose-ball challenge did most of the damage.

With a one-goal game yet again, the Flyers had no time to coast. Both sides had their dangerous moments, but UD continued to display a moderate level of better overall play in spite of the random sloppiness and lack of detail. The persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when Campbell completed the brace with a well-timed weak-post header after a perfectly-weighted cross from Kamphaus found her lurking in the box. Campbell climbed the ladder and put it away to make the score 4-2.

UD had a couple other chances to add to the lead. Waters tried to score from long-range free kicks, while Kiehl and Kamphaus continued to squirm through the Mason defense for half-chances near the goal box. The Flyers were fortunate on the defensive end when Mason bounced a shot off both posts but never crossed the goal line.

GMU out-shot UD 10-8 in the second half, including a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Flyers managed eight shots on frame to just four for GMU -- the difference in the match.

It wasn't a great performance, but enough to get the job done. Top to bottom, some players continue to play at a pace that's far too slow for their teammates' tempo, while defensive mistakes, poor clearances down the middle, and occasional loose marking are season-long issues that keep UD from collecting clean sheets. That said, UD got enough production from enough key players to overcome the sloppiness elsewhere.

Dayton remains at home this week, hosting Davidson on Thursday night.
