Smile MSOC: Dayton Clobbers LaSalle 5-0

The Dayton Flyers remain undefeated in A10 play after blitzing the LaSalle Explorers 5-0 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. Two first-half goals and three more after intermission did the damage as Dayton improves to 8-4-2 (3-0-1), while LaSalle falls to 5-8-2 (1-3-1).

Dayton opened the first half with quality offensive movement, pushing forward along the flanks that resulted in several dangerous crosses in the box. Midfielder Amass Amankona was the springboard for much of the early scoring chances, counter-attacking with quick feet and well-fed balls behind the last Explorer defender to Dillon Nino angling toward the goal box.

LaSalle had the best early chance however, hitting the right post from long distance in the 12th minute on a shot that GK Justin Saliba couldn't reach.

The close call didn't phase the Flyers however. UD once again controlled the run of play and continued to apply pressure in LaSalle's defensive half of the field. Amankona fed a ball to James Haupt in the 21st minute that Haupt crossed on a jail-break near the Explorer goal box. The cross just missed the stretched boot of Maik Schoonderwoerd from 8yds out to keep the match scoreless.

Amankona's excellent work paid off in the 36th minute after slotting a ball to an open net from inside the LaSalle goal box to put UD up 1-0. Haupt nearly made it 2-0 just a minute later, but a reflex save by the Explorer goalkeeper from point-blank range kept Haupt's redirect out of the net. Amankona took care of business on the ensuing corner kick by flicking the cross past everyone in the mixer and into the left pocket to earn the first-half brace and put the Flyers up 2-0.

From there, UD was firmly in control as LaSalle looked over-matched everywhere on the field. Amankona broke loose at midfield late in the half and had a convoy of teammates sprinting forward for a potential walk-in scoring opportunity, but his cross came up short and let the Explorers off the hook.

First half stats favored UD in shots 5-3 and corner kicks 4-3. The Flyers scored on 2 of 3 shots on goal. Alex Amankwaah was credited for assists on both Amankona goals.

The second half started much like the first as UD challenged in the LaSalle goal box with dangerous chances and corner kicks. A hand ball in the box cost LaSalle a penalty kick, but Amankona's shot to the top right corner was saved by a diving mitt to keep the score 2-0.

Immediately following however, Amankwaah placed a corner kick to the front post that hit the turf and squibbed to the back post for the untouched/unassisted goal from the corner flag to put UD up 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

Amankona secured his hat-trick in the 62nd minute on a header, once again fed from Amankwaah. That put the Flyers up 4-0 and the rout was on. It also lifted Amankwaah's game total to a goal and three assists. Haupt shot a ball in 87th minute that Nick Hagenkord deflected to put UD up 5-0. Saliba stopped a LaSalle PK moments later to preserve the shutout.

Match stats were dominated by UD in shots 19-8 and corner kicks 13-5.

It was one of UD's most impressive performances of the season, even if much of the brilliance came at the feet of two key players. Other players stepped up however. Haupt was dangerous in the offense, Kissima Bojang was solid in the back, and Kennedy Nwabia used his large frame to push bodies around in the offensive third. Goalkeeper Justin Saliba had light duty all evening and was rarely tested -- PK aside.

Dayton remains at home as they host Massachusetts on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
