Bits and Pieces

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- It’s been a while since we cracked open the “From the Swamp” email inbox. Let’s clear off the cobwebs, peek inside and see what crawls out, shall we?

The first electronic correspondence concerns a 2011 prospect from the Buckeye State:

Swampy,

Are you at all familiar with Aaron White, a 6'8" forward out of Strongsville High School here in the Cleveland area? I met his cousin last night at my son's rec baseball game. I was wearing a UD shirt, and he approached me and said Aaron has received a scholarship offer from UD, along with Duke, Cincy, and a couple of Big Ten schools. He also said that Aaron was going to college with the intent of getting an education rather than aiming for the NBA.

Regards,

Kevin Hennessy

Young Mr. White has been in the news a little bit lately, Kevin. According to Ohio High School Hoops, UD and a bunch of others including “Penn State, Akron, Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Butler and Purdue” have been or will be coming up to Strongsville High to see Aaron play.

Here’s a link to the entire piece:

I think Aaron’s cousin might have been just a little over-enthused, confusing “letter bombs” or coaching visits to open gyms with actual full rides being extended to his cuz. I seriously doubt that Aaron has a scholarship offer in hand from Coach K. In a previous piece, OHSH stated that White had “offers from James Madison and Akron” along with “interest from Wisconsin, Penn State and Butler.” Interest does not equal offer.

Here’s some more on Aaron White from High Major Scoop:

This next email concerns the most recent “From the Swamp” on UD NCAA teams of the past:

Swampy,

Enjoyed your recap of some great UD tournament runs and how they were made possible. Also you listed 5 reasons why UD success will continue, with a great fan base as number one. I may have emailed you my favorite fan-based memory, but here it is again:

1967 NCAA Final in Freedom Hall UD vs. UCLA.

Obravac gets the tip against Lew Alcindor then all hell breaks loose. The game ended, mercifully, in a 15 point victory (could have been 40) for Coach Wooden and the unbeaten Bruins. Anyway all through the bashing the Flyer Faithful screamed "We're number one...we're number one!”

When the horn sounded the chant switched to "We're number two...we're number two!"

It brought tears of joy!

Charlie Dos Santos ‘67

Like I told Charlie, that picture of Big Dan beating Alcindor for the opening tip in the NCAA Championship game helped factor in my decision to attend UD.

The next missive is from fellow UH resident Frank Floriani on my column about our lovely West Side dorm back in our respective freshman year:

Swampy:

I fondly remember moving into UH that August of '68. That day kept getting better -- when we first pulled into campus, I thought NCR and the buildings next to it were the campus -- wow, were they ugly! Then my buddy from Massapequa, NY got his assignment to Stuart and they told me and my parents that we were going to UH. You remember it well-- it was sweltering! I remember playing football and hoops in the hangar. And I certainly remember ROTC. Our commander, I think Morrison was his last name, was a real nice guy. I once heard that he was killed in Vietnam, but I have no way of knowing if that is true. Regarding those Vets-- do you remember Nick Gambino? I ran into him for our 35th. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and don't forget that before us was that most famous of all UH residents: Father Guido Sarducci, otherwise known as Don Novello!

Frank Floriani

Yup, Frank, I do remember Nick -– he was one of the guys I was thinking of when I wrote that piece. Of course I knew that Novello went to UD but I had no idea that he lived at UH!

My sister-in-law MT’s parents did you one better, Frank. She claims that her folks pulled into the old Dayton State Hospital on Wayne Avenue thinking that it was UD!

-- Nice statistical analysis by Ray (no relation to Frank) Floriani over on College Chalk Talk about “Team Pace” in the Atlantic 10 Conference:

http://collegechalktalk.com/general/pace-floriani/

UD went from 62 to 67 possessions per game, for an increase of 5 per 40 minutes, season-to-season. Ray’s analysis makes sense when you take into account UD’s up tempo offense last year vs. when B-Rob was here.

-- Speaking of recruits as we were before, BG was at a Wayne HS open gym recently to see Travis Trice, Jr. and Markus Crider, along with assistants from ND, Illinois and BGSU, according to OHSH:

-- 2011 Chicago Thornton (IL) PG Jay Parker (brother of UD redshirt transfer Josh Parker) is on the BG radar, according to ChicagoHoops:

http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/jparker1.html

-- Another 2011 prospect that BG is tracking is 6’8” PF Jakarr Sampson from Akron SVSM (OH) HS. According to OHSH.com he’ll be scheduling a visit to UD:

-- It appears that Clarkston (MI) HS product Matt Kamieniecki is very close to committing to Western Michigan, where he would be reunited with his Wolves teammate Brandon Pokely:

-- Looks like former UD player Darnell Hoskins found something to keep himself busy over the winter:

Matt Kamieniecki chose Ball State over WMU.
