Flyers Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to High Point

The Dayton Flyers men's soccer team opened up the home schedule Friday evening with over 2,000 fans watching, but a one-goal lead wouldn't hold as High Point tied it in regulation and won it in extra time on a quality free kick from 25 yards. The 2-1 OT loss drops Dayton to 0-2-0 on the season, while High Point improves to 1-1-0.

After a disappointing loss in the season opener at Loyola-Chicago, the home opener at Baujan Field was a great opportunity to turn things around and get back to UD's familiar winning ways. For a while, it looked promising.

Both sides battled after the opening kickoff as each team took turns working for extended possession between the goal boxes. But not much came from the good energy as the run of play was disrupted by defenders doing well to poke balls away and keep the opposing attacks in check. The Flyers chose to play long balls down the flanks or across the field to mids and strikers pushing forward near the touch lines, but High Point did well to intercept and turn potential scoring chances away.

Conversely, the Flyer back line showcased a fresh look with Maik Schoonderwoerd playing center fullback after a 2013 season in the Flyer offense. With the young back line, his experience was much-needed and the defense -- for the most part -- did enough to keep the Panther offense bottled up. High Point's best opportunities came when their forwards were able to turn the corner and push the ball baseline for crosses to the back post.

Rafael Gamboa got the scoring started in the 13th minute with a low bouncing shot to the right post that beat Panther GK Kody Palmer for the early 1-0 Flyer lead. It was a goal that lacked a lot of buildup and largely came out of nowhere, but the individual brilliance counted just the same and put Dayton out in front.

Greg Enstone had a chance to cash in as well. He got behind the last defender on the right side of the goal box, but pushed a ball just wide of the far left post from 8yds out.

The remainder of the half was fairly even as neither side showcased long stretches of dominance. Halftime stats slightly favored High Point in shots (7-6) and corner kicks (2-0).

The second half was much like the first 45 minutes. Both sides battled for possession and at times had space to make something happen in the offensive third, but the two offenses had trouble springing open players free with timely passes out of the midfield. Dayton used the quick feet of Amass Amankona and Kissima Bojang around the center circle, but their lack of size made them difficult to target by Flyer teammates when transitioning from defense to offense.

Dayton had trouble generating shots on goal as High Point's defense tightened up in the second half. The Panther offense had more luck however, out-shooting UD 12-5 over the final 45 minutes of regulation. While most of those shots were not especially dangerous, the time and possession alone prevented the Flyers from generating a consistent push forward as the match wore on.

Despite the ugliness of the match, both sides battled. The Panthers tied things up in the 78th minute on a jailbreak counter-attack from the opposite goal box that caught Dayton out of position and in retreat. A great dribble-drive along the left side of the UD box sprung a High Point player just loose enough to send a cross into the box. After several attempted clears and a short scrum, High Point knocked it home from gimme distance to even the score at 1-1.

UD had a couple late chances to win it in regulation -- including a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining -- but it was defended well and the match went to extra time.

High Point earned a free kick from 25 yards out just two minutes into sudden death. The in-swinger from outside the right corner of the Flyer goal box beat the out-stretched hands of Chris Froschauer and tucked inside the far corner of the upper 90 to win the match 2-1.

Match stats favored the Panthers in shots 20-11 and shots on goal 8-3. Corner kicks also favored High Point 5-3.

It was a match the Flyers should have won -- for any number of reasons. Here are a few: it was a home game, the Flyers held the lead with under 15 minutes remaining, and the competition was not exactly herculean.

Both Flyer goals surrendered are correctable mistakes. The first was a result of poor transition defense. The second, while one of the best free kicks taken at Baujan Field in years, is not the kind of shot Froschauer makes a habit of letting in. Perhaps more of a concern however was the inability to deliver a consistent push on offense. Dayton had trouble figuring out what they wanted to do how they preferred to do it as they encroached upon the High Point goal box -- a direct result of just three shots on frame for the entire match.

The Dayton Flyer Classic concludes on Sunday with another double-header. The Flyers play the second match of the day against Detroit. Kickoff is 2pm.
