Dayton Tops Detroit 3-0

The Dayton Flyers men's soccer team notched its first victory of the season with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Detroit Titans on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. All three scores came in the first half as UD salted away much of the second half to improve to 1-2-0 on the year. Detroit falls to 1-2-0.

UD wasted no time getting started. James Haupt overcame heavy traffic inside the box to put away a Rafael Gamboa corner kick with a well-fought header for the early 1-0 Flyer advantage in the 3rd minute of play.

From there, the Flyers maintained solid pressure in the offensive third of the field, lofting sideline or diagonal balls to attacking players running toward the Titan goal box. Detroit had trouble tracking back on defense and it would cost them as Dayton would soon strike again.

Brian Richards settled a cross in the box from Amass Amankona and slotted a ball past goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher to put Dayton up 2-0 in the 12th minute. Already down a pair of scores and not generating much in the way of offense, Detroit was effectively on life support for the remaining 75 minutes of the match.

Amankona did well to earn numerous touches in the Flyer midfield, tracking back to collect the ball when UD transitioned from defense to offense to help the Flyers push forward with a sense of urgency. UD racked up a fair number of first half shots and corner kicks as the match continued, but the offense looked a bit rushed at times when choosing to play balls in the air instead of the ground. Still, Detroit wasn't putting up much of a fight and Dayton was seldom threatened in the defensive end of the field.

Richards would get his second goal of the afternoon in the 32nd minute when Haupt served up a perfect chip out of the midfield. Richards ran onto the ball and calmly beat the goakeeper from 10 yards out to make the score 3-0 and effectively ice the match away.

The remainder of the half was played mostly in Detroit's defensive end. With the limited talent they had, the Titans did well to zip the Flyers up over the last 10 minutes of the half.

Halftimes stats reflected the overall run of play with UD owning a 10-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 lead in corner kicks.

With the major drama of the match long gone, the second half took the remaining air out of the balloon. The level of play deteriorated and both sides were bottled up defensively. More liberal use of substitutions juggled the lineups over the last 45 minutes and a lack of sustained possession made it far less entertaining. Both sides appeared happy with the current score and were content to knock the ball around until the final whistle.

With UD's foot off the gas, Detroit was a bit more competitive in the last 25 minutes. Second half stats favored UD in shots 7-3 while Detroit out-cornered the Flyers 3-1. The Titans also took a number of free kicks that landed in the Dayton goal box, but the Flyer back line got rid of the most dangerous chances when asked to preserve the shutout. The Titans managed just two shots on goal all afternoon.

The good news is UD earned their first win of the season and did so rather convincingly. But Detroit was a weak side -- just as they were a year ago -- and may not tell us much about Sunday's performance or Dayton's 2014 potential to bounce back from two early losses. Things get much tougher next weekend as UD travels to Birmingham, AL, for a pair of matches against Jacksonville and host UAB. The Blazers are NCAA tournament-worthy and two Flyer victories would be a shot in the arm after a less-than-ideal start to the season.
