Road Warriors

DETROIT (MI) -- “From the Swamp” is reporting to you this time from the MGM Grand Hotel in downtown Detroit. I am here for my company’s three day long sales kickoff and retired from the evening’s festivities early so I could bang out a few paragraphs for your edification.

The new and improved Dayton Flyers are 4-0 at home since reducing their roster to six active scholarship players, one wounded JUCO and walkon extraordinaire Bobby Wehrli. Thus far it has been addition by subtraction, but Thursday’s roadie vs. SBU followed closely by a visit to the Bronx on Saturday to face the recently returned Jon Severe and the Fordham Rams will tell us a lot about what to expect for the remaining fifteen games on UD’s A-10 slate.

The first question from those unfamiliar with the Flyers is most likely this:

“How the hell are they doing this with a 7 man rotation and no one over 6’6” tall?”

We all probably have our own opinions in response to that query, but Jeff Eisenberg, editor of The Dagger for Yahoo Sports does a great job in laying it all out for us:

Eisenberg doesn’t exactly mince words when describing the dismissal of the Northland twins, does he? He states “they were caught stealing items from on-campus dorm rooms” while providing a link to a Dayton Daily News article where Archie declines to explain why the two were let go. So much for presumed innocence, eh? Good article, tho.

If you want to get a preview of the game from a Bonnies POV, here is a link to the UD game thread on The Bonnies Bandwagon MB:

The Bonnies are coming off a 14 point road victory at UMass, which is no easy feat. The key to a Flyer victory will be to contain SBU large person Youssou Ndoye (who stands seven feet tall and tips the Toledos at 250 lbs), while staying out of foul trouble.

Needless to say, no one who roots for the Red & Blue is disappointed to learn that the game is being played while SBU students are still on break. It is currently 1 degree in Olean, so maybe that will convince the ones who are on campus to stay warm and snug in their dorm rooms.

Less than 48 hours after they play at SBU, the Flyers will somehow transport themselves the 350 miles from Olean to the Bronx to butt heads with the 5-8 Rams in Rose Hill Gymnasium. Fordham is coming off a road loss vs. Rhody on Wednesday that from all descriptions set the game of basketball back several decades for its pure ugliness. Hopefully, it’s not contagious.

-- “The Sweet Tweet of the Week” concerns Bobby Wehrli who sounds like he is ready for the Bonnies:
