Road Test

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- One of the major rites of passage from adolescence into adulthood is when a young person gets their drivers license. That little piece of laminated paper suddenly opens up new vistas of opportunity -- both good and bad -- for its holder.

But before the DMV will grant you a license, you gotta pass the road test. Fail that and it doesn't matter how many questions you got right on the written exam -- you don't pass; you don't drive. Simple as that.

I can speak from experience here, as way back in the dark ages, I nonchalanted my way thru a stop sign during my road test and flagged it the first time around. I'm sure the examiner was just trying to teach me a lesson and boy did he ever. I overemphasized every stop during my second road test and for months thereafter.

Your University of Dayton Flyers are about to face their first real road test of the season, as they travel to the Belk Arena to face the new kids on the A-10 block, the Davidson Wildcats. The Red and Blue are making the transition from "Other Teams Receiving Votes" to the #22 ranked team in both the AP Coaches and the USA Today polls. The Flyer Faithful have seen this flick before:

Step 1: UD gets ranked

Step 2: UD promptly loses a road game and falls back into the ranks of the unranked

This time it feels different. The Flyers performed admirably in their warm up roadies in always-tough Olean and at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx. Meanwhile, the Wildcats -- not so much -- as they got stepped on by the Spiders in Richmond over the weekend.

The good news is that for the first time since UD made the switch to small ball, they will actually face a team that isn't any taller than they are. Davidson features three guards and two forwards, with their tallest starters standing only 6'7". Oddly enuf, three of the starting five hail from the state of Ohio which is two more than UD features.

Hope the Flyers' first road test turns our better than mine did!

-- Down the road from Davidson in Charlotte, former Flyer Brian Roberts is filling in admirably for starting PG Kemba Walker, amassing 16 points and 5 assists in 27 minutes of action in a blowout Bobcats win vs. the T-Wolves on MLK Day. My guess is that B-Rob makes the trip up I-77 to see Archie and the guys in action.

Columbus native LeVert had a final two of UD and UM.
