RIP Blackburn Review

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- If you had bookmarked The Blackburn Review and bothered to visit it any time since last season ended, the result was that you were sent to a blank page. With a recent click however, you got this:

http://www.blackburnreview.com/

Clearly, the lights are on, but nobody is home. The site is frozen in time at the tail end of last season, with the only new content being a button for a link to Sully’s excellent “Talking Out LOWD” podcast.

So what happened to The Blackburn Review? I have no idea, but I’m sure Sully can provide the answer. If I had to venture a guess, I would imagine the volume of work necessary to produce previews and recaps of every single freakin’ tilt in a 30+ game schedule eventually took its toll. It ain’t easy--just ask Matt Schwade or David Jablonski. Hats off to all of those guys for putting in the effort.

Over the years The Blackburn Review and UD Pride have had what can best be described as a strained relationship. Yours truly was often a target of ridicule, despite the fact that I was the very first guest on their initial podcast. A couple of their minions created fake Swampy Meadows Twitter accounts that I had to have deleted. They have had it in for Chris Rieman for some reason. Posters on the UD Pride MB were frequently denigrated.

While the recent iteration of TBR was extremely content rich, it is hard for them to escape their website’s sordid past. The commentary was often extremely profane, misogynistic and they will never, ever live down their absolutely despicable treatment of former Flyer problem child Matt Derenbecker. There was also a confrontation with Pete Waleskowski, Keith's dad. The “Fire Spina” BS probably didn’t win them any fans in the university administration. All of which goes a long way in explaining why these guys couldn’t get a press pass for UD games, excepting Sully in his recent role as WING radio host and podcaster.

Bottom line: TBR was a bunch of guys hiding behind aliases of former UD coach’s names cranking out Flyer info. While one could say “any Flyer content is good content” count me among those for whom TBR will not be missed.

Elsewhere in Flyerhoopdom:

-- Sounds like Foster Loyer, the MSU transfer now at Davidson could be a problem for A-10 teams this year. He debuted with a career-high 27 points on Tuesday night against Delaware. 10-12 from the field, 6-6 from three-point range. Loyer is from nearby Clarkston, MI.

-- The Elder Swampette tipped me off about this excellent Netflix documentary series entitled “Bad Sport” and in particular, the “Hoop Schemes” episode on the Arizona State point shaving scandal back in 1994. Highly recommended!

-- Speaking of Netflix, just when you had thought we had seen the last of “Tiger King” get ready for “Tiger King 2” set to premiere on November 17th:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

I would like to give the BBR a final send-off with a simple, effortless unnoteworthy fart.
