BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Back in October of 2008, yours truly stumbled upon the “old version” of UD Pride just floating out there in the ether like so much space junk, waiting to crash land on your house and ruin your day. This discovery provided a connection to a bunch of old “FTS” columns that were thought to have disappeared into cyberspace, never to be seen again. That led to a “Greatest Top 10 List” of those pieces in this article:

http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6217

When you have some time to kill, click on a few of those Top 10 stories, as for the most part they are pieces that do not contain bullet points or a big ole bunch of links.

Since most, if not all of you, either never saw these columns or have forgotten that you did so, why don’t we come up with a “Second Greatest Top 5” for your bathroom reading pleasure? FYI, there is some “overlap” as some of the columns from the old site also reside on the current iteration of Chris’ brainchild, so let’s stick to the oldies:

Number 5: From April 2007: “Message Board Grammar”

http://www.flyersports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529

These rules still apply and continue to be broken on a daily basis all over the intrawebs.

Number 4: From March 2007: “The Zone”

http://www.flyersports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361

I recently discovered that the lunchtime run at the Y is no more.

Number 3: From March 2007: “The End of Civilization as We Know It”

http://www.flyersports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=430

Six years later and I still hate “streetball” with a burning passion, basically because the only rule in “streetball” is that there are no rules.

Number 2: From June 2007: “Sorry, He Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”

http://www.flyersports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1060

Ironically, the Diocese of Detroit never sold the property, so St. Bede is still sitting there, with grass growing over the asphalt in the parking lot. What a total waste.

Number 1: From May 2007: “My Knight with Negele”

http://www.flyersports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=803

This is actually a repeat of a repeat that I originally penned back on the old FlyerHoops.com website.

Elsewhere in the wide world of sports:

-- I’m not the only web hack reminiscing about the good old days. Bill Simmons did likewise, harkening back to his old “Boston Sports Guy” site on Digital City in his column today on Grantland:

Once upon a time “BSG” would actually reply to reader emails and we exchanged a few about the Red Sox back in the day.

-- The great writer Richard Ben Gordon passed away this week. The equally tremendous Joe Posnanski provides a fitting eulogy:

-- While Gordon was best known for his seminal political book “What It Takes” about the 1988 Presidential election, this article from Esquire magazine on Ted Williams is considered one of the best pieces of sports journalism ever penned:

-- Good thing I don’t do this for a living, eh? Journalism is among the top 10 occupations most likely to attract psychopaths:

-- The Chicago Sun-Times gives UD recruit Kyle Davis some love:

-- The NCAA released its first edition of their official RPI:

Coupla reaction pieces, the first coming to us from Seth Davis at Sports Illustrated:

And another from SI, courtesy of Andy Glockner:

-- Super write-up from Pickin’ Splinters about Jim Jabir’s #17 ranked (don’t call them Lady) Flyers:

-- RIP, CincyHoopsReport.com:

-- “The Sweet Tweet of the Week” comes to us from ESPN’s Jay Bilas, who asks what the heck do you do when you see this?

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
