Off-Season, Off-Topic

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- I gotta tell ya, it is kinda hard to find stuff that is on-topic smack dab in the middle of the Flyer off-season. Doug Harris had a nice blog in The DDN the other day where senior Devin Oliver talked about how some of the other guys are looking in pickup games. Beyond that, here is all I’ve got:

-- Doug did his best Arch imitation with this nice piece on Flyer players from the ‘50s and ‘60s reuniting with the widow of their should-be in the Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Tom Blackburn:

-- Good news: UD recognized as having one of the best fan bases in the country.

Bad news: For Mid-Majors.

Linky mixed message:

-- Here is the list from the same Emory University study for “BCS” schools, altho the Big East is included in it and they don’t play “BCS” football:

-- CBS Sports provides us with a “Conference Catch-up” on the Atlantic 10:

-- Speaking of CBS Sports, don’t be looking for fellow Bostonian Jeff Goodman’s byline under their masthead any more. As of mid-June, Goodman will be posting, doing the occasional TV gig and (he has already started) tweeting for ESPN:

-- SJU Head Coach Phil Martelli has had a rough off-season:

-- Now that the “coaching carousel” has finished spinning for this year, here is a rundown of which coaches landed where:

-- “Free agency” is a reality in college hoops, at least for early graduaters/fifth year seniors, who can transfer and play immediately:

-- Speaking of former coaches, ex-UD mentor Oliver Purnell is the prime beneficiary of one of the stupidest arena deals in the history of inane arena arrangements. Somewhere, Ray Meyer is doing 360s in his grave:

-- I really wish that Archie had roster room to go after former UD recruiting target Jordan Dickerson, the 7 foot ex-SMU player headed to Penn State:

How often can you snag a guy who put up 13 points, 23 boards and 9 blocks?

Wait a minute…those were his season totals? Never mind.

-- College basketball fans everywhere have to be encouraged with the news that Kevin Ware from Louisville is able to shoot hoops a mere two months after his horrific injury during the NCAA Tournament:

-- Mrs. Swampy and I spent a lot of time in our undergrad years at the Roesch Library, one of the ugliest buildings on UD’s campus. Not any more, it ain’t:

-- RIP Deacon Jones. I had the pleasure of breaking bread with Deac at a golf tournament at the NFL Hall of Fame in Akron and he kept everyone at our table totally entertained with tales from his playing days.

-- 30 really cool behind-the-scenes photos from classic movies. Bonus: Not a slide show!
