I Won't Be Taking The Fifth

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- This year, the 4th of July fell on a Thursday which presented a minor dilemma of sorts: to take Friday off and make it a four day pass or pocket the PTO and enjoy what amounts to a one day weekend.

I chose the latter.

The onset of July brings another slate of AAU ball and evaluations by college coaches for HS prospects. Here is what’s shakin’:

-- Rivals released their Top 150 for the Class of 2014 and there are lots of Flyer targets on it:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketb...ings/rank-2993

Among the guys who currently have UD on their lists are:

38. Terry Larrier
54. Angel Delgado
86. Vic Law
91. Vince Edwards
100. Martin Geben
126. J.P. Macura
128. Justin Bibbs
141. Sean O'Mara

There was a bunch of Twitter action this week concerning Chicagoan Vic Law. Supposedly Law had narrowed his list down to VCU, Northwestern and UD and he was gonna pop any day...still waiting to see if that is so.

-- He probably just missed making the Rivals Top 150, but here is an in-depth piece on Gahanna Lincoln HS’s Javon Bess, courtesy of JJ Huddle. Javon has been offered by UD:

-- Archie has also extended offers to a couple of 2015 prospects:

Louisville Trinity HS PF Raymond Spalding:

-- This is something every HS prospect should keep in mind -- the difference between exposure and getting exposed:

-- Nuthin’ will get you pumped for the upcoming Flyer campaign faster than this “Ultimate Game Day Experience” video:

-- Devin Oliver and Jordan Sibert talk up what the Flyer game day experience will be like -- at the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational in November:

-- 116 Flyer student/athletes made the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Well done, ladies and gentlemen:

-- You gotta love seeing Kevin Dillard on the Washington Wizards’ Summer League squad:

-- As well as having Chris Wright on the Indiana Pacers 2013 Rookie/Free Agents camp roster:

http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/pacer...nt-camp-roster

-- Brian Roberts’ status with the New Orleans Pelicans should be determined soon, now that the NBA Draft has taken place. NOLA has a team option for BRob for this season for which they have yet to pull the trigger.

-- Chris Johnson will be playing for the NBADL All-Stars in the NBA Summer League but I can’t find any linky goodness to confirm that fact, other than a tweet by UD Assistant DOBO Eric Farrell.

-- No word on if/when Devin Searcy will appear in the NBA Summer League. DS played in Russia this past season for BC Triumph Lyubertsy.

-- Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports New York takes a look at the A-10 and pegs UD as “the sleeper”:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/07/...ason-notebook/

-- Meanwhile, the Big East remains “a circus that rolls on” according to Dana O’Neil at ESPN.com:

-- “Bubble Soccer” looks like it would be an absolute hoot:

-- DWade’s son Zaire is one of the best 5th grade hoopsters in the country:

-- It seems that baseball cards are no longer the big deal they were when I was a kid:

-- Ironically, the one city in America that has banned automobiles is located in the State of Michigan:

If you have never been to Mackinac Island, make it a point to get there and stay at the Grand Hotel. You will not be disappointed.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

Your not going to get near the Grand Hotel unless you have a lot of spending cash. Pocket the money and opt for one of the island's bed & breakfasts . . .

Rothstein Projections

Can't agree with anyone that doesn't automatically pick Fordham last in an off-season where no coaches were fired.

I took major umbrage with UMess fourth until I realized this is suddenly a very top-heavy league. The top three teams are head & shoulders better than the rest so just about any team could finish in the 4-10 spots. I've lowered my ire to minor umbrage.

The A10 has continually proven to be a conference dominated by teams with strong seniors that have already won. LAS made the leap last year to Dr G's credit. It's why you have to give STL the benefit of the doubt even while expecting Crews to screw things up.

MAS is not in this category and neither is STJ. They didn't beat anyone last year and unless they have some as yet unknown first-teamers suiting up this year they aren't making the leap this year. Kellog's system is a gimmick and Martelli refuses to utilize the talent he already has on the roster.

I could see Rhody taking a major step forward if only b/c I was impressed with how hard they played under Hurley. I wouldn't bet against Lonergan at GW or Mooney at Richmond. The Colonials were a demonstrably better team at the end of the year even as Lonergan had the guts to take his lumps early in the season to do things his way. The Spiders are one reliable post player from being contenders again. Mooney either needs to better recruit to his system or revamp it, b/c you can't win in the A10 getting killed on the glass every night.

Pecora at Fordham and Hewitt at Mason appear to be perennial cellar-dwellers and I'd still put the Dukes and the Bonnies ahead of them. STB is still the toughest road trip in the league and has more talent than the rest of the teams in this group.

Picking the Flyers 5th from their 12th-place finish a year ago seems like a big swing until you realize that the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th place teams left - that puts Dayton 8th through attrition alone. Fifth place could be 9-7.

I'd counter that the Flyers have all the requisites to make the jump in one more season, but not this one. If by making the jump you mean challenging for a championship and at-large berth. They are missing talented upper-classmen that know how to win. Or refuse to lose.

As for Mackinac, we had a great time there.

It was beastly hot and humid though for our whole stay, and my lasting memory will be of sitting on a bench outside a candy store while the pungent aromas of freshly made fudge and even fresher horse droppings from the street mingled in the heavy summer air.
