Dayton Tops George Mason 3-0

DAYTON (OH) -- Dayton earned a clean sheet for the fifth time in six matches, defeating A10 newcomer George Mason 3-0 Friday evening at Baujan Field. Two early goals in the first half opened things up, and a second-half insurance goal finished off the Patriots, playing their first-ever A10 match. Coached by former Flyer star Diane Drake, GMU falls to 3-7-1 (0-1-0), while UD improves to 7-4-1 (2-0-0).

The Flyers got off to a very good start as the opening act of a Friday doubleheader with the UD men's soccer team. Using a definitive speed and skill advantage, Dayton found space in the center circle and did well to find teammates making long runs near the touch lines. Senior Juliana Libertin legged out several balls along the left side and pulled her defender wide, opening up space for others to take advantage.

A good portion of the offense got kick-started in the Flyer back line, as Meghan Scharer, Megan Herr, Haley Keller, and Sarah Senoyuit all took turns stepping up into George Mason passing lanes and picking off balls with aplomb. Allison Klinefelter did equally well and the tag-team effort in the defensive half of the field provided a numbers advantage moving forward.

Senior Stephanie Emery worked the right side of the field and found some space with the ball at her feet in the 11th minute. A couple touches opened up a seam and she ripped a shot to the upper far post from 18 yards out to put the Flyers up 1-0. Just a few minutes earlier, Emery had a two-shot sequence from five yards out, blocked by GMU goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson.

Sophomore Ashley Campbell proved dangerous at striker, using her long strides and big frame to battle for possession and chase moon balls over the top. Combined with Emery and Libertin, they helped the Flyers threaten the GMU goal box on a number of occasions.

The Flyers put some distance on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when Herr polished off a redirect courtesy of a Libertin corner kick to stretch the lead to 2-0. It was her first collegiate goal.

From there, Dayton was firmly in control for the remainder of the half. In many respects, UD should have cashed in at least a couple more times prior to halftime given the quality chance they generated. Out-shooting GMU 9-3 and with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, Dayton controlled the run of play and limited the Patriots' offense to half-chances and poorly-weighted balls over the top.

The second half lacked the same attention to detail in the offensive third of the field as UD generated possession but lacked a clear purpose after corralling the ball. George Mason picked up their level of play in the opening minutes of the final frame and did a much better job of winning loose balls or making runs off the ball. The UD coaching staff urged the Flyers to pick up the intensity and after about 20 minutes, things finally settled down again.

Libertin had trouble shaking her defenders along the left and right touch lines for most of the match, but continued to make her long runs to chase down balls and stretch the opposing defense. It's the kind of work that's been Libertin's calling card for three and a half seasons -- probing defenses with a grinding work ethic until a defender finally cracks from exhaustion.

That's exactly what happened in the 87th minute when she slipped past her defender, took a touch, and ripped a shot to the far post from 18 yards out to put the Flyers up 3-0 and round out the scoring. Like many other Libertin goals, it was the culmination of a full day's work, running her defender ragged with death-by-a-thousand-cuts persistence.

For the match, UD outshot GMU 18-5, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks favored Dayton 6-2.

Overall, the Flyers put forth about 60 minutes of solid work and while it wasn't poetry from start to finish, UD was never seriously threatened as the Patriots were clearly out-classed in most phases of the game. When UD decided to turn up the heat, they did mostly what they wanted.

The best news however was another clean sheet for the Dayton defense. The fifth goose egg in six matches, the back line including GK Elizabeth James has resurrected itself after taking a lot of abuse by opposing offenses earlier in the season. While the competition is not the same as it was in late August and September, head coach Mike Tucker has to be pleased with the progress -- especially the cleaner balls and more organized shape.

Dayton hits the road for a pair of A10 matches next weekend. The Flyers visit UMass on Friday and Rhode Island on Sunday. Dayton is tasked with grinding out two important road victories to stay unbeaten and atop the A10 standings.
